I have a noise coming from the driver side fender. Sounds like a quite washing machine almost. wish/wash/wish/wash. pumping something back and forth... I have heard it the last few days. So this time I turned the wheel and I think that caused it to stop or it could have been coincidental. Help me identify this. I am going to be doing a long distance drive and don't want to have trouble. Currently it doesnt make this sound all the time. but seems like since it started it hasnt vanished. Thanks!
Is the plastic fender liner or inner fender flapping around! Maybe a fastener or two is missing. It could be the pump for coolant being pumped into the thermos bottle. Do you here it after stopping the car? Hal
Sounds like something's stuck in your wheel OR it just rained and there's something left on your brakes. I would visually inspect it and clear out whatever is there. But if you don't see anything or it doesn't work, drive to an area where you could drive 35-40mph. Shift to neutral. Then slam on the brakes hard. That will essentially clean them. I did this one time after it rained and my brakes were making noise, and it totally worked.
Check under the bumper, there's rather flimsy bits that can get dislodged when they get hung up while parking against a curb?stop. Could also be a brake squealer, used to let you know the pads are getting worn.
Is it like an rhythmic vibrating sound on the driver side? Forgive me for doing this but like "Vvvvvp vvvvp vvvvp" Getting faster as you drive?
No its like a eletronic part working and sounds like its pumping water back an forth. i think it only does it when the engine is off and running on battery. but maybe i don't hear it when the engine turns on. it doesnt happen all the time either.
No not all the time. Thats what is sounds like a pump. it would make sense that its pumping coolant into thermos but maybe the coolant is low than? +sounds like electronic pump. Is this normal to hear the pump working? yes I only hear it when the car around 5- MPH running on battery. and I dont hear it all the time.
You should only hear the electric pump filling the bottle after ignition off. Last for 15 sec or so. Hal
Possibly can shed some light here (pun intended!!!) I've noticed a similar noise intermittently on my '05. I have HID headlights. This noise seems to be coming from the headlight leveling motor, like it is constantly resetting its level every second or two. So this is basically a servo-type noise. There is a qualitative change when I stand on the back bumper while it is doing it, it either goes faster or stops. At some point, I'll try re-initializing the headlight ECU and see if that clears it up.
clearblue definitely has a Prius, as the most recent posting is about being rear-ended and having a damaged brake capacitor backup power supply.
I have a 2006 Prius hybrid and it jsut started making a "washing machine" nooise from under the hood, drivers side, not far from firewall. Most noticable when car is stopped at a light, but can hear it sometimes when driving. Also, sometimes right after I start the car. 80,000 miles and never heard this before. Last week the underside dragged across a piece of roadwork. Not usre if this is related or coincidence. I do not think I found an answer in this thread. Did I miss it? Thanks
I get this sound too. I'm sure it is not the inverter pump nor the transfer pump. I do have HID lights. I wonder if I somehow caused this when I removed the head light to replaced the HID bulb. Anyone have solution to this strange sound?
It very likely is the coolant control valve beginning to fail. Toyota part 16670-21010 around $60 and not a difficult repair to try yourself. See P1121 - Coolant Control Valve Replacement (with pics) | PriusChat for the guide I used.
