You should buy some ear plugs for the canine. ;)

The Prius should not have to compromise with the comfort of any biological being.

In another thread, even the comfort of a child does not take precedence ... needless to say a dog.

Another theory might be some sort of smell the dog may not like

I'm voting with auditory radiation from the electronics, or olfactory radiation acquired by the interior, or a Pavlovian response following some unpleasant experience involving the car. Maybe even some combination of the above.

The superior sensitivity of a race of animals that communicate by sniffing anuses and like to roll in rotting squirrel cadavers is vastly over-rated. (IMHO, of course.)

Unless you're dragging the dog to the car while it's already running, I'd doubt the noise hypothesis. (Possible, but the Prius won't make any more noise than any other car would while off - probably not even detectable by a dog. All it's doing is running a couple very low-power systems to keep the current time, wait for you to unlock it, etc.)

I'll put my vote in for either the smell of the new car (dogs have extremely sensitive noses, after all), or possibly just that it's unfamiliar. Perhaps with training, the dog will get used to it; but you'll probably have to let it come to terms with the Prius on its own schedule. Forcing it into the car might just make things worse, rather than, say, letting the dog approach the car on its own, and rewarding it with a treat for doing so. (Baby steps may help here too - a treat one day for coming near the car, a treat the next for being a bit closer, then maybe the next day for coming near an open door, etc. until you convince the dog to get all the way in and settled down.)

If all else fails, I propose man's new best friend: The Prius! :D

+1 for having a dog that loves the Prius, new car smell and all. Hopefully your dog will eventually come around. Good luck!

Our neighbors dogs freak out when the Prius pulls up too, they don't when the Fiesta does...I think its a motor whine thing.

    Welcome to PriusChat.

Since the dog takes motion sickness pills, it seems to me that the combination of Prius ventilation and suspension would contribute to the pup's weariness. Turn up the blower, or open a window when feasible. Slow down to under 50mph when taking corners! Also, make sure your pup has an extended view out the windows, rather than laying on the seat or floor.

I had a dog that was car sick and I upped the blower so air was blowing on her. That fixed the sickness issue with her.

The only other remotely plausible solution is to let the dog drive, while you're in the car of course. If dog doesn't get sick, then you solved the mystery. Afterall, a Prius is very fun to drive!

Don't be too sure about that. Once took one of my cats to the vet, and decided to let him roam free in the car. BAD IDEA! He decided to leave a fresh log on the back seat. And let me tell you, it smelled!

Never again have I let a cat out of the carrier while in the car.

+1: I've had two cats and they each left a present in my car. Never again!

Given what vets do do doggies sometimes....THAT would do it for me!

    ...said the INDOOR cat owner!
If I tried to get my cranky old black cat (Onyx) within 20 feet of my Prius, he would quickly dispell both of those rumors..... :)

There's nothing wrong with the Prius. The dog must be imagining things.

Send it to training school on how to ride in a Prius.

On the other hand, dogs do have an innate sense for danger.

Ah, but we have no idea how much is communicated in that one sniff. Dietary health, social adjustment, sexual compatibility...dogs are smarter than humans, in some respects. There's no need for dinner and a movie first...:p
