Door Panel Leather Inserts

Yes, xenonrider! Please show us how--I just ordered a set of Clazzio's with extra material. This is all I've found so far:

I'd been in contact with Robin at Priushoods (eBay) who had been working for some time on a set of door panels, but finally gave up on it when they couldn't do it to their satisfaction.
They do, however, do a leather center armrest cover that looks very good.

Speaking of Clazzios: has anyone heard any more on the PC group buy?

 

It appears that the trick is to use the smallest drill bit that will release the rivet, and then use a soldering iron or something of the kind to "mushroom" the pieces back into place.

Another option is to drill deeper and use some self tapping screws (I'd find some stainless ones) to resecure.

Otherwise, there are a number of adhesives that could be used, such as Permatex 84115 PermaPoxy 5 minute Plastic Weld.

That should do the job...

 

I watched a company do this on my car (while putting in Katzkins). Seems to be quite the project. It was not a 10 minute deal (and they are very experienced). They did not glue them back - I believe it was rivets - but I could be mistaken....

Yep, most hardware stores have small self tappers that would suffice. Check out ACE...

It's an epoxy specifically designed for plastics and resins, so I'd be pretty confident.

Not my suggestion. I'm not too sure how they'd work.

If the original pins are still long enough, melting them with a soldering iron is a valid choice.

Another idea might be an appropriately-sized push nut or tinnerman type of fastener that might capture the original pin....:suspicious:

I found this blog. Before this person install the leather, he sand it the sponge to make smooth surface and he is using glue gun to put it back the insert.

P.S. Bean is in Jax FL, but I believe they were drop-shipped from Torrance, CA.

Door panel inserts? Ha! I've yet to even install the Clazzios themselves. In fact, it was all I could do yesterday to replace the horns...

 

A minor point, the $23/m^2 price is for vinyl, not leather.

 

Ahhhh... maybe I could have gotten real leather if I had looked. Padded and perforated would probably have been more luxurious. My theory was the vinyl, if nothing else, was spare material.

Edit: Not to mention, the OP is referring to leather.

 

I got perforated vinyl for my Katzkin door panels and got hosed worse than that on price. That's not a bad price for small amounts of perforated vinyl.

I glued mine on on over the stock fabric door panel, it feels pretty good because the fabric underneath gives it a little extra padding. Katzkin's instructions say to glue it on over the door panel fabric.

The Katzkins came stock with un-perforated vinyl for the doors.

 

Was it a picture of your installation that I once saw but now can't find? And did you disassemble the panels?

P.S. Finally, does xs650 refer to a cross between a piano company and a Brit vertical twin?

 

After all the trouble this is sounding like it entails, the $364 that my dealership said they'd charge to do it on all 4 doors doesn't sound so bad now!

Bean Garage appears to be close to me here where I live, and I'm in Jax frequently, so I wonder if they install, also, as another alternative?..... hmmmm

Yes, the xs650 refers to the Brit like twin the didn't leak that was made by a Japanese piano company. Actually the engine appears to have been based on some obscure German twin who's name escapes me right now. The engine was OHC, unit construction, horizontally split crankcase, didn't leak and had reliable electrics so it had nothing in common with Brit twins of the era other than being a vertical twin.

I think that's not a completely outrageous price if they guarantee their work for the life of the door panel. There are lot of ways to screw the job up and replacement door panels are expensive.
