Electronic Switch Shifter with Backlight installed! Pics!

I haven't tried it, but i'm pretty sure if you did that it would just kick the car into N or leave it in drive, just like if you hit the park button going 60 it will go into N.

 

Now that I've seen it installed, I REALLY like it. I'm interested to find out if the position of the D button can be switched.

 

Sorry to be Capt. Bringdown, but I think this is actually detrimental to the car. The existing shift lever is very intuitive. You can operate it without looking at it. These buttons all look to be shaped the same. You have to look down to catch the right button.

It reminds me of my "brother" who never met a gadget he didn't love. He put a stater button in his Mustang. Now, instead of putting they key in the steering column and twisting, now he puts the key into the steerung column, twists the key, THEN DROPS HIS HAND TO THE CONSOLE TO PRESS THE START BUTTON. Makes zero sense.

 

I'm going to use the fact that the backlighting doesn't match the rest of the vehicle as impetus to keep myself from putting another $200+ dent in my bank account. :-D

 

I disagree. The stick seems unnecessary and I find it in the way a lot of the time. The pushbuttons should be pretty easy to get used to and you should be able to tell from your hand position which finger controls which button: e.g. thumb = drive and middle finger = reverse. Sure it might take a few seconds to figure out, but after that it should be no big deal. Plus Park is already a push button, so what's the big deal. And I think it would be easier to put the car in N or B if you ever needed to do that, by pushing a button with say your index finger or pinky instead of trying to fugure out what to do with the stick while driving.

 

And you think this memorization makes it easier? LESS chance for error? I don't know what happens when you hit R instead of B at 45 mph, but I don't want to find out. Give it a try and let me know.

It is just a means to make one Prius different from another. Make you go OOOOOOH. At $200? Pass.

P.S. The D button is on the "wrong" side because it is meant for right hand drive markets, right?

 

No doubt it's an elegant solution. I want one.

I think the Toyota-supplied stubby little sticky thing is an artifact of crash boxes, double clutching, and drum brakes. (And to go along with stuffing pipe insulation in the grille to get the engine to warm up, how about a hand choke, a throttle, and spark advance/retard levers on the steering handle?)

As far as the all-same-shaped-buttons and the D/B concerns, I certainly don't find it particularly intuitive to:
– Pull Back on the stick to go Forward.
– Push Forward on the stick to go Backward.

Unfortunately, all the above is moot. Its WAF is practically zero

 

My point is the joystick can be operated without looking. The buttons are just "look at me" showbiz.

They could have made the buttons differently shaped, or have raised relief to differetiate them. But it's still slower and more cumbersome than the joystick.

Remember there is no mechanical linkage.
DUH, REALLY? It felt like it was coming right out of the four speed box.

It's probably less expensive than the shift lever.
It's $200 on top of what you've already paid. Plus labor. Were it a factory option, I am surre it would not be a no-cost option.

 

For all those who say a) the buttons must be shaped or differently aligned and b) one must look at the buttons then check out your TV remote control or even the keyboard your texting messages here. Our brain can easily handle 4 keys and also remembers their position after a few minutes. Quickly we have learnt the major keays on the remote of the TV and you find the Space, Shift, Enter and Delete button on your PC keyboard also without looking at it. That reminds me that the keay all look the same and are shaped the same too. So why should this be different for 4 buttons ? It's just a matter of like or dislike and if teh Prius would have come with just buttons, then nobody would miss a stick

For me it's a way getting rid of the joy stick as its position is not ideal when using the touch screen or right placed buttons. And regarding the colors get the OGS switch than can change the colors

 

It's just show-biz. Buttons on the TV remote often have different shapes; different colors too. Space bars are not shaped the same as delete keys. And there is a reason that many jurisdictions have laws against cell phone use/texting while driving. It involves which areas of the brain are in use while driving (as opposed to sitting in a recliner watching TV or sitting at your PC). It ain't the same. People who drive while talking on phones drive like drunks. And the numbers bear this out. They can't even wheel a shopping cart properly.

Fully agree with you regarding driving and doing other things the same time. But honestly how many times do you use the stick during driving? R when you stand still, D when you want to move forward, N almost never on a Prius and B only when motor braking is really needed. I think this can be easily handled by every person.

 

+1, agree 100%. Push button to START, push button for ECHO, POWER and EV, why not push button for driving modes as well.

 

That's it, I've GOT to have that steering wheel!

 

Electronic Switch Shifter MOD

No I don't have one yet, but take a look at the shifter in the link below and check out the plug. *IF* you can gain access to the printed circuit board to swap the letters around, you should be able to just move the associated colored wire around (in the plug) to swap function as well. Sound logical?
Other input ideas welcome! :mod:
