This morning I started my 2008 Prius (approx. 31k miles) and found the big red triangle with an exclamation mark and check engine light turned on. I drove my car <1 mile to a smog check station where they ran a diagnostic on it and came back with the P0A9C code. A quick internet search turns up that this is "HYBRID BATTERY TEMPERATURE SENSOR "A" RANGE/PERFORMANCE." Has anyone else dealt with this? What should I know before taking it to a mechanic? Thanks ...
That is telling you that either a traction battery temperature sensor (there are 3) is bad, or else the traction battery ECU has failed. Since your car is covered by the hybrid system warranty, it would be best to let your local Toyota dealer deal with the problem.
Thanks for the info. I just called my local Toyota dealership and was told that since my vehicle is a salvage vehicle, it's not covered by the warranty. Any idea how much this might cost to fix at a mechanic?
I don't necessarily believe that code, it is pretty unusual, especially to hit right at startup. If that is the code, then by far the most likely problem is a loose wire inside the battery case. If you are in LA or Bay area, you should take it to a hybrid shop. Otherwise, have a dealer at least confirm the code. It might be worth pulling the negative battery cable off for 5 minutes to reset things and see if the code comes back, before taking it somewhere.
Hello there, I have a 2005 Prius that I've owned since it had 4 miles on it. Absolutely love it! Over the past 10 years, I've had very, very few difficulties with it. In April 2014, we replaced the hybrid battery. on Thanksgiving day, 2014, the red triangle warning light came on and upon testing, this code P0A9C came up. My husband didn't see how that could be possible. He cleared the code, and it had not come back. Yesterday, immediately upon start up, the code came up again. We have had a slight decrease in MPG performance, but otherwise no difficulties since November. We purchased our replacement from a very reliable 'remanufacturer' and received a 3 year warranty on it. Should we just contact them once again for another replacement?
I know this thread is old, but maybe someone can benefit from my reply. What the dealership said is absolutely a lie. The hybrid system falls under the “emissions warranty”. This is a different warranty than the manufacturer warranty and is not vouded by the vehicle being salvage. Manufacturers, and therefore company dealers are required by law to honor this warranty. Same goes for safety recalls. In California, there’s the California extended emmissions warranty, which runs for 15 yrs or 150,000 miles. Again, a salvage title does not void this warranty. The hybrid battery supports the drivetrain, if it’s fauly, it’s a manufacturer defect regardless of the car title. I want to make this clear, as I have seen dealers try to lie their way out of this and charge the costumer for services they are legally responsible for. Many times it’s ignorance, but other times is flat out trying to take advantage and avoid the hassle. However, if you call Toyota USA and the California Air Resource Board, they will tell you that you are covered. It’s actually in the owners manual as well.
can you post a link to a resource? we have never hear this before. i always assumed a salvage should be crushed, and you enjoy at your own risk.
