5000k HID lights in Winter Gray Prius IV

Just got my hid kit from hidextra today. The enclosed instructions were completely useless. I tried the online chat support and the guy took 10 minutes to respond to each question, and he had no clue about installation in the Prius.

I ended up getting the relay harness too to ensure a smooth source of power. I looked in the fusebox and saw a small (+) cover at the top end of the box that flips open but just had a thin metal plate.

just saw Nola P's OP and realized there was another (+) in the fuse box to tap into. Thanks for the great picture!

You guys are going backwards!
I have two 2006 Prius's and my 2010 Prius with Halogen blow away the others in throw and total lumen output based on how the roadsigns for litterally several miles will light up when I go to high beam....

I"m running the PIAA's.

 

Why do you say backwards? Using your '06 reflector lighting system (HID) to compare to the '10+ lens system is not an equivalent comparison. I have nothing against PIAA lights. I had them on my 4Runner before my Prius. BTW, if your preference is halogen replacements then I think the OSRAM's are a little brighter. The HID kit I have installed now absolutely blows away the stock halogen lights in every way. I would be real curious to see someone do a side by side comparison of the PIAA (or OSRAM's) against a decent HID kit for the '10+ Prius. Also if cost is a factor for you then I would think the HID's are more cost effective as they normally have very long life cycles (as long as the optional wiring harness is used) as copared to the relatively short life cycle of high output halogens. From my experience an reading around the life cycle of the high output halogens is anywhere from 1-3 years. Maybe the newer styles last longer???

 

Your right, the reflector can be everything.... but I drive both cars and the Halogen on my 2010 Prius is way superior to the HID 2006.

I know thats not a good comparison for what your doing...... normally HID should blow away Halogen.

Not sure why I see the results I do, unless its the reflector too.

 

So I tried installing my HIDextra.com HID's with the Relay but couldn't get it to work since I couldn't figure out what plugs go to what on the harness, so I just connected them directly which worked perfectly fine, but I still want to use the harness for insurance. Found this pic of the harness on an Acura forum and wanted to know it this was the correct way to plug in the wire harness. Please help!

 

Try this site. Probably the reason it didn't work for you was the polarity.

Thanks for the link. I wired up the harness and HID's the same way as the picture I posted and everything finally worked. Took a couple times though since I had the polarity reversed on the ballasts. If I did the install over again I could probably knock it down in less than half an hour now!

 

Where did you get the relay and how much for the relay and HID kit?

I got my H11 6000k HID and Relay kit from HIDextra.com I got the Slim Ballast kit and it came out to $71 for everything.

 

Where did you connect the relay power and ground wires since the battery is in the rear of the car?

The purpose of this thread was to answer questions like yours. Nola did take the time to create the thread and take detailed pictures with instructions to help people like you. I'm not going to reiterate instructions that were done so well to someone who can't even take the time to see what this thread was created for and jumped to the last page for answers. Next time use the 'search' button for answers.

 

I got the slim hids from hidextra installed yesterday with the relay harness and it flickers on/off when I put it in reverse to drive and accelerate. Anyone else experiencing this problem and have a resolution? Thanks in advance.

 

Do you really need the wire harness? can't you just connect direct since they are 35watt?

 

They're 35watts when they're on, but the reason we put a relay in is because when the ballast first fires up to ignite the bulbs it surges power greater than 35watts that the stock wiring may not be able to handle. The relay is only 11.00 and takes about 10 minutes of extra time to install. It's just a safeguard so that the HID is powered on it's own with it's own fuse.

 

I just installed a 5000k HID kit from XenonDepot / KBCarstuff. A few friends and coworkers have installed these kits on their Lexus IS and GX's. They've all had the kit for 2-3 years and still have had no problems.

I highly recommend this kit as it has a dual relay setup so that each side is completely independent of the other. With this setup, if a fuse/relay ever goes out only one side will be affected. If something failed on a single relay/fuse HID kit both headlights would go out.

Installation was a breeze and warm up time is no different from stock HIDs. The light produced is pure white, no blue at all.

Laying out the kit to final installation proceeded so quickly I forgot to take before pics. Here are some pics of the final product though.

 

Any issue going from highs back to lows? Like no light while the HID warms up. Or do you leave the low on all the time like I do on my Motorcycle. What issue might I have running 55watt balast vs. 35watt? Did not understand overload statement sorry. Gen2 bulb was the same for high and low and motor just moved bulb to get one a high beam.
