Time for new tires

How about Goodyear Comfortreds? They are the same size as the stock tires, and offer quiter and smoother ride.

I replaced the Badyears with Costco Michelins; better in every respect: ride, noise, but most importantly, handling and stability at freeway speeds, were all improved. I think they transform the car, and all four tires were round and straight, something you can't take for granted with any Goodyear product.

I read some of the feedback on the Comfortreds at the Tire Rack website, and there were a couple of occasions of defective tires - too much runout. We had to replace one of our OEM Integritys because of runout [you should have seen this tire on the balancer - it was laughable], but even after that, they never approached the smoothness of the Michelins. I took off the OEMs at 1500 miles, and haven't missed them for a second.

 

Note that most tires, other than the Integritys, will result in an mpg decrease. I bought Goodyear Viva2s and lost 2 mpgs.

The Michelins, while more stable and better tracking than the Integrity tires, do not offer the quietness or smooth ride of the Comfortreds. Different tires, designed for different purposes.

Everyone agrees the Integrity is crap, but it's a low-cost tire used extensively as OEM equipment (read: cheap). But not all GY tires are bad, or they would have been out of business years ago. Similarly, not all Michelin tires are good, just look at TireRack and you'll find plenty of horror stories about any tire brand.

Lots of folks have switched to Comfortreds with excellent results. Others like the Tripletreds, even though they are slightly larger and heavier. (If I lived in snow country, I probably would have gone with TTs myself.)

I have the 17" Pirelli's coming on my 06. Is it really that big of a deal? I prefer handling over a 2-3 MPG savings. Does anybody have the Pirelli tire with the EFPC wheels?

 

I haven't had the chance to put these on SAGE yet, but on our other cars we use Bridgestone Turanza's - the Chrysler & the Toyota MR2 Spyder. Best tire for the $ so far for us.....

it's their top rated tire- 85000 miles. extremely quiet and great handling especially on wet roads
gave my stock tires away and put them on when new.....

They've been improved. 90,000 miles now.

I've got over 37,000 miles on mine and their going just fine. There's lots of tread left. I even punched a large nail into one 3 weeks ago. It just bounced off the belts inside, without causing a leak.

 

I've got Goodyear TripleTreds, and I think they're great. I didn't have many complaints about the Integritys either though, so it's hard for me to make a comparison. I went with the TripleTreds because they're the highest rated tire in their category on TireRack (even higher than the Michelin HydroEdges!).

What tires would you recommend for summer ?
Will soon need to take off studded Nokia snows - assuming that the redwinged blackbirds that have come back are still harbingers of spring!

Michelin Energy Savers are good and probably slightly less price than Hydro Edge, Goodyear triple treds or Fuel Max are also a very good choice for good FE. Hal

 

I just replaced my "Badyears" after only 22,000. I selected Pirelli P4s. Ride & handling have improved. Hopefully mileage won't be hurt too much. I have a 2008 package 6 & am currently averaging 42.8.

Probably because most don't realize they make a LRR tires. Half the folks in the industry don't even know or care! Hal

I asked someone at a Goodyear if they sold LRR tires and was asked "whats that?" and when I spelled it out, they had no clue.

I just put Michelin Energy Saver A/S on my car. MUCH quieter, and MPG after 30 miles (of a total 120 on the tank) is up to 49 MPG already. I pumped up to 40/38 and less harsh of a ride than previous tires, too. They were $107 each (plus shipping) through Tire Rack. There's the $70 rebate going on right now, also. That should cover shipping and about an additional $30 or so off. Still have to get them mounted & balanced, but the local Walmart to me said that was $5/tire!

 

Mount and balance for $5/tire? WOW! That is a hell of a deal. In my area you are looking at about $80-$100 for mounting, balancing and disposal fees.

If you're already seeing an improvement in MPG just wait till they are broke in. I'm assuming the new tires are the same circumference as your old ones (assuming wear). Great choice.

 

Now where did that great Prius-specific LRR tire test go off to? And more importantly... is there a newer version of that list? Last I checked there wasn't a concensus on what tire was "best" all around for handling/wear/RR... was there? I figure anything has to be better than the Integrities, so will likely head to the best RR of the bunch.
