Windshield wiper question (with video)

Hey there fellow Priuschatters, I've got a problem/question on my hands. If you take a look at the video - you'll notice that the wiper leaves behind two streaks of "smeared" rain. It's right in the line of sight when I drive, and when it's raining at night it really tears up my ability to see well. So my question to you all is: Is there something on the windshield that is doing this? I've cleaned it several times with no luck. I've also cleaned the rubber wiper blades with no luck. I've also made sure the rubber blade is fully secured in the wiper housing - and it is. Should I go by Toyota and buy a new rubber refill? Or is there something I can do to fix this myself? Note: Also, I think it may have something to do with the two middle "clamps" on the blade. Hence, If I put the blade ontop of the smeared lines - it lines right up. Which makes me believe that there isn't enough tension/pressure against the windshield in those spots.

I believe they were ok. I can't remember when the problem started. Your pine needle scenario certainly sounds like that could have caused the problem. They are all over a year old - I think I'll grab a replacement for the refills. Are there instructions on how to take out the existing refills and put in the new ones? Thanks for the reply.

I'm gonna grab some new refills I guess. Just have to figure out how to take the old ones out and put in the new ones. Can't be that hard of a task. Thanks for the input you two!

You're right - it probably would be easier. I just got off of the phone with my dealer and they told me that they are avoiding replacing the inserts - and just getting a whole new blade for around 12 bucks. Also, yes. You have to remove the blade to change the refill. They did, however tell me that they can order an insert for 6~ bucks and have it here by Tuesday. Not sure what I'm going to do. I'm tempted to get some Rain-X Latitude wipers and be done with Toyota's. I'll let you know what I decide to do. Thanks again everyone.

 

Sorry for bumping - Just called the dealer back, and they told me that a replacement driver side wiper would be ~$50 dollars. What the hell?! The previous person told me it would be $12. I'm through.

Got it. Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to bring my blade in and have them show me how to do it as another use recommended to me.

I can see that being the case, but mine have held up alright.

I live in the south, so it's possible pine needles or other tree debris may have made a mess of the rubber. We will find out when I get my new refill's on Tuesday.

Wow, thank you for the rebate form! I may give that a shot. It'll be like 40-45 dollars to replace the driver and passenger side blades with the Rain-X latitude's. It's temping though. However, with the rebate it's more like 30-35. So that's not so bad!

 

Just got my refill installed! Turns out that was the problem. Works like a charm now. Time to replace the passenger one as well for the heck of it. Thanks again everyone. What a great community to be a part of.
