    Somewhere in the universe, there may be a society of intelligent beings at our same level of technology who are facing a very close star getting ready to go supernova. They would have a good reason for being depressed. That makes our problems look trivial by comparison.....since we can (and will) continue to make progress.

    You got that right. When we moved in to our current house, pre-reno insulation and boiler replacement, the first Winter month bill was $600. :eek:

    i hear ya guys. we are fully insulated, high efficiency boiler and if i could get my wife out of this frozen tundra, i'd be somewhere warm in a heartbeat. why oh why did my ancestors decide on the northeast?:(

    Sorry, I did not actually answer your question. It is not a fireplace insert but, a free standing, natural gas fired, space heater that sits in front of the fireplace. Heat is both conductive and radiation. My fireplace is blocked off with glass as there is no sense in letting that heat go up the chimney. You cannot buy them retail in California, you must order it on line or go to a state where they are permitted.
