What's interesting is you didn't see any MPG increase with the lighter Enkei 17x7s compared to the much heavier stock 17s.

I'm sure it is because of the open spoke design causing more drag. When I was doing the research to buy the wheels it seemed to be the general opinion from alot of people here that it would be the case. Of course now I'm trying to sell those wheels, so we'll see what happens with that. The car did seem more responsive though. I will give it that much.

Thank you for the help and kind words. I knew going out there it wasn't going to be the best time of day. I had just gotten the car back from the detail shop and wanted to take advantage of the beautiful weather while I had a chance. Today of course they are talking rain and very cold weather to where it could snow below 1000' in So. Cal! Insane weather for sure. I work and do lighting in the movie industry and love photography. I am using a Canon 30D although I wasn't shooting in RAW format. I just had carpal tunnel surgery so a little handicapped and of course it's my shooting hand that's all wrapped up. So I just went with full auto mode since I couldn't keep messing with the manual adjustments. I really need to go get a reflector kit. I couldn't stop thinking about really needing some sort of bounce card to pick up the light on that side of the car. I'm dying and waiting for the new Canon 5D mk iii to come out. Anyways, for sure when I'm all healed up I will get back out there when the weather is nice and be more prepared and get better shots. perhaps even take a volunteer to help out.

Sharp looking car Shawn! Loving the contrast of black rims on white car. Hope to see it in person this Saturday.

Side aero drag and weight are factors in fuel economy, but rolling resistance is more important. The 19" tires have more rolling resistance from the wider contact patch and stickier tire compound. The increased width causes additional frontal aero drag. And the overall diameter of the 19" tires is 25.2" compared to 24.7" for the 17" V tires. So your speedometer is going to be off by few percent compared to the V tires.

To tell you the truth about the 17's is my speedo was off by 2mph faster than any radar sign and GPS tracking I would always see. Now with the 19's it's dead on. Go figure.

My goal is go beyond +35 with wider rims but I'll be stretching and running camber. Rolling and small pull probably front and rear.

Sounds like it's gonna look good. Can't wait to see it. Have you chosen the wheels yet?

That's because Toyota fudges the speedometer reading so they can get to the magic 50mpg number. Your 19's tires have a bigger diameter, so they correct the speedometer error.

    24.7" for 215/45/17
    25.0" for 195/65/15
    25.2" for 225/35/19

A small difference in the diameter can make a big difference in the way the car drives.

We're talking about why shawn didn't see any mpg increase with the lighter Enkei 17x7 versus the much heavier OEM 17x7, which have the same width and hence same frontal aero drag.

Yeah it's because rolling resistance is a much bigger influence on fuel economy than weight and aero drag. He didn't change the tire size so the rolling resistance is basically the same, therefore there won't be much difference. He could put moon discs on the wheels an probably not be able to measure a mpg difference at normal commuter speeds.

The main factors that influence mpg:

    1. Rolling resistance (rubber compound, tread pattern, tire width, tire diameter, carcass profile and tire pressure)
    2. Diameter (any deviation from stock affects speedo accuracy and final drive ratio)

And to a much smaller degree

    3. Weight (tire plus wheel)
    4. Frontal aero drag (section width of tire)
    5. Side aero drag (wheel design)

That settles it. Far too many people complain about the OEM 17s being too heavy, as if unsprung weight is the worse thing.

Well 24lbs for a 17" wheel is ridiculously heavy, so they're justified in complaining. For reference, I've had 17x7.5 inch Volk CE28 wheels that weighed 13lbs. And the stock 18" alloys on my SUV weigh less than the V wheels. So the V wheels are porky. Unnecessarily porky.

While the extra weight doesn't influence mpg significantly, it does make the car accelerate and decelerate slower. A pound of rotating mass is the equivalent to about 3 pounds of sprung weight. So saving 11lbs per wheel times 3 equals 33lbs per wheel, so around 132lbs total. Or about the same as carrying around a passenger all the time, or 3 heavy suitcases in the trunk.
