Hey Everyone--Sorry if this is a ditto, but my 2010 Gen III has synthetic oil and my service writer told me to wait until 10,000 miles for service--even the tire rotation. Well, I am starting to get the warnings for the upcoming 5,000 mile maintenance. Do I just take it in and have them reset it while they rotate the tires? I figured the system would know it has synthetic oil, but maybe not! The salesman thought it was conventional oil. Thanks! Fred:rockon:
The computer still makes it come on at 5,000 miles and it cannot be changed to only come on at 10,000 miles. The car does not if you are running synthetic, what viscosity oil etc. Reason: 10,000 miles is only if you use synthetic 0W20 and the car is ran under 'normal usage'. If not, it's back to 5,000 miles. There's a thread which talks more about it in detail, describes normal usage etc. (searched for and found http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...-oil-maintenance-reminder-comes-5k-miles.html ) Also, you can reset it yourself and there's also a thread describing how to do it, and it is in your manual. (for example: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii.../67747-oil-change-2010-prius-do-yourself.html )
As it happens, the oil change notice just turned on for my car. I had thought that I had overridden the 5K interval setting via the maintenance setup screen, but either it reset itself to 5K or the dealer reset it to 5K when the oil was last changed. I know not which, but I do note that the little sticker the dealer puts on the upper left corner of the windscreen also indicates that I should bringing the car in after 5K miles from when the oil was last changed. Fortunately, both of these things are easy to override. My dealer, left to its own devices, would use conventional 10W20 when it replaces the oil. I had to make it very clear to them that this was not acceptable.
Toyota still wants you to follow the every 5,000 mi scheduled maintenance, whether at the dealer or you DIY. Every other 5K miles is just inspection and tire rotation, with no oil change. I rotate the tires every 10K miles (as OEM tires have no warranty anyway). It's important that you follow factory recommendation for warranty purposes even if you take it to the dealer every 10K miles.
32K is absolutely correct ... here's what you're supposed to do at 5K in RED for a non-Special Operating Condition vehicle. I'm going to take mine in every 5K since it has the free maintenance up to 25K, so let them do whatever they do for free. After that ... the dealer won't see my car until there's a warranty issue, as I do my all own maintenance. 5,000 miles or 6 months Check installation of driver’s floor mat Inspect and adjust all fluid levels Rotate tires Visually inspect brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs Additional Maintenance Items for Special Operating Conditions 2 Driving on dirt roads or dusty roads: Inspect ball joints and dust covers Inspect drive shaft boots Inspect engine air filter Inspect steering linkage and boots Replace engine oil and oil filter 1 Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis and body Repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below 32°F / 0°C: Replace engine oil and oil filter 1 Extensive idling and/or low speed driving for a long distance such as police, taxi or door-to-door delivery use: Replace engine oil and oil filter 1 REV
I do not use my dealer for oil changes. Here is how to reset the reminder: 1. Display "trip A"' 2. Push the park button, then the power off button. You will need to fully turn off the car. 3. Locate the MPH/Kilometers button on the dashboard. Press and hold down and then restart the car by pushing the power on button (hold both buttons down at the same time - when the scale is re-set, let go of both buttons)
