    Beta ? Are you joking ? How many of those are Toyota or associated employees ?

    Besides, you missed the point of my post which was to debunk the claim that GM is "10 years behind". If they are 10 years behind, why is the Volt already in the market when the Prius plugin is still in beta ?

    Got it.

    Not surprising since GM's prowess isn't exactly ultra low emissions ICE designs (but they are not 10 years behind either).

    Big difference is that the Volt can run in pure EV mode so the tailpipe emissions can be zero for weeks or even months. The current Prius can't match that.

    Prius won't have power plant emissions because it is cordless. Yes, a big difference. Volt has two types of emission but Prius has one.

    When you take all the emission from the well to wheel, this is how it looks.

    The regular hybrid with 0 all electric range (AER) emits about 270 g/mi. PHV Prius with 13 AER is about the same. Volt with 35 miles AER is around 320 g/mi. Pure EV is around 280 g/mi. Finally a non-hybrid gasoline car is near 400 g/mi.

    Yes, GM would make a much better car if it were BEV, not plug-in hybrid. I said that before a half dozen times. Being a plug-in hybrid is of superior responsability over a project, which GM has not commited to.

    Come on, some rightful and moral sentences: Prius the current, and the past iconic, and the first one, some 10 (13years in JP) years counting, have a very comfortable lead in which means to efficiency, simplicity and reliability! Only time can put up results of Volt...But then, in a few years time to aknowledge that, Prius has rolled a family of multiple, plug-in, and even a surprising FCV (not in my worst dreams of H2, but true)...:p

    At least 3 in Portugal are driving with normal drivers (they work in my company, and I know personally one), and ALL never have driven a Prius before. And they were selected just at random.

    Volt is already in the market...Yes...
    Prius plug-in is already at full service, the beta is just for laboratory measurements, the car is ready, and beautifully finished, worth of having one, at much l€ss than a Volt. If there were complaints, they would be withdrawn, wouldn't they? Beta is for that, not for sale.

    326 is for the month of December, 321 for January makes a totalof 645. That is more then 500.

    GM tested the Volt pretty heavily including as far back as 3 years on the drivetrain itself. That being said the Prius (non-plug in) has 10+ years on the road and the Plug in has about two. I think both companies have done their homework in this department.

    This chart while basically accurate does not reflect location. It deals with a US average GHG emissions. If you live in a coal state your Volt emissions could be HIGHER then this chart says (YIKES!). If you live in a state with a cleaner then average power grid or are the rare person who makes their own power your Volt emissions could be MUCH lower then this chart shows.

    Geography matters in this case. Plugging in a Volt in West Virginia should be a crime with 95+ coal electricity. Pluggin in Vermont and you are running on 93% nuclear and hydro and are in general much cleaner then a Prius.

    The price of the electricity varies as well. One cannot assume running on electricity will save you money. Check your electric bill. Divide the amount by kWh. For me it comes out to 32 to 36 cents because I use very little electricity. Volt would use more electricity than my home, seriously.

    Since Volt consumes 12.9 kWh per 35 miles, it costs more to operate than my Prius. For me, PHV Prius makes sense - use electricity only to cover short trip MPG killers. I have not run the numbers yet but it sounds really appealing.

    Does anyone work for an employer that will set up a charging station if an employee purchases an electric vehicle? I was talking to someone the other day, and their employer had thrown that out to employees. I think it was U-Haul.

    My employer would not care if I plugged in my car at work. That way, you could actually not have to use any electric at home. Just charge it at work.

    Last month, I paid $15 for the electricity. Additional $15 was for the delivery fee. Plus $25 for the charges and taxes. That was for 170 kWh.

    With deference to usbseawolf2000, who is a great contributer to the forum, those calculations are not valid. While you are willing to pay $0.33/kwh for your home, you cannot compute the cost to charge an EV at that price. You must use the marginal cost of electricity for this added usage.

    If you are willing to take your home off-grid, but needed the grid to charge an EV, the calculations then would be valid. (Maybe a bit off-topic, but 170kw / month is absolutely spectacular. A new thread about how that is done would be worthwhile. And then too, there is the question of why those 170kw aren't generated by solar PV, which would require about a 2kw system there in Queens.)

    We have a few charge stations where I work. 120v only. But even charging at 120v requires less than 8 hours to charge back to the charge level an EV was at, prior to leaving for work. We have a 240V charge port at home, but heck . . . why use it? Free is good !

    This is my electricity consumption for the last two years. My average consumption is 185 kWh per month. My average cost is 32 cents per kWh. The lowest was 25-27 cents per kWh (June and July) during the peak.

    Average residential cost in 2010 was 19 cents in NY. I believe national average is 11 cents.

    Even if I use NY average 19 cents per kWh, Volt would still cost more to operate than a 50 MPG Prius. Per EPA, Volt would consume 36 kWh / 100 miles. Prius would consume 2 gallons of gasoline for 100 miles.

    36 kWh x $0.19 = $6.84. Gasoline has to cost $3.42 to equal the cost to operate the Prius. Gas prices are reaching that high already in NY. That's only the electricity part of the Volt. Volt will always cost more when it runs on the premium gasoline at 37 MPG vs. 50 MPG Prius.

    If we use the national average cost of electricity (11 cents per kWh), it can cost less to operate the Volt on electricity. However, Volt can cover only 66% of the miles with electricity (per GREET model).

    In summary, Volt would not make sense for me unless the gas price reaches about $6 per gallon. PHV Prius that does not consume a lot of electricity would work better for me in terms of cost and emission. Everyone should do their own math since the price of electricity depends on their current consumption.

    Just saw another one today on the 5 fwy in Laguna Hills, CA. Unlike the the last time that I saw a [burgundy] Volt, this time traffic was going slow enough that I was able to snap a quick photo with my phone.

    So, I've seen two Volts now. From a styling standpoint, they both looked great in person.

    The CMT study clearly shows the PHEV40 is best (at lowering GHC's) for distances of 21-40 miles between charges.

    Majority of the trips are below 20 miles range. That provides the best bang for the buck. Bigger battery will displace more gasoline but it does not necessarily (average) lower greenhouse gas or cost effective.
