NHTSA intensifies probe into 100,000 VW diesel vehicles | detnews.com | The Detroit News

So far, VW believes it's due to diesel contaminated with gasoline, possibly due to user error and hasn't found any defect.

For awhile, it seemed like VWs never got much recall attention I think partly because they sell in such small numbers in the US, thus resulting in a small # (in absolute terms) of NHTSA safety complaints.

Sounds like people are mixing their diesel with too much bio diesel or probably mixing it with too much petrol in cold weather.

There again, high pressure diesel pumps are a popular (and expensive) issue on diesels over here.

High pressure only does so much, control is a big part too. Think better control was one of VW's reasons for switching from unit injectors to common rail.

No problem. Your Mercedes were German and diesel, but that's about where the similarities end. A lot has changed in the 30 or so years since they were made. Forget whatever you know about diesels being to burn almost anything. No more veggie oil or high concentrations of biodiesel in modern engines.

I like some here seriously considered the VW diesel for purchase. This issue plus one of inter cooler icing up problems led me to drop my interest in them.

Not sorry I got mt Prius but had the new VW diesels been more reliable who knows I might have been driving one now!
