    Hey all,

I'm in the market for a gen3 Prius IV (looking to buy in March) but I'm drooling over Entune. Any news out there on when it'll be in the current Prius? And thinking I could upgrade my nav to Entune later on is just wishful thinking, right?

    Thanks

Right, according to the Prius Team, Entune is a new design from the ground up and is not backwards compatible to current vehicles.

Why would it not be backwards compatible with current vehicles? It's just a head unit. You should be able to put it in any vehicle.

    Interesting. More information at CNET:

    CES: Hands-on with Toyota Entune

I wonder if a retrofit kit would become available, either from Toyota or an aftermarket.

I thought I read somewhere that it'll be on select models later in 2011 so maybe it won't be in the Prius until the 2012 model comes out.

That's what I was going to guess as well Tideland. It may be because I simply want it in the Plug In when I do buy one, but I seriously hope we do see it in the Gen III by the 2012 model year.

The CNET report says Toyota is moving to 5 sound systems across its entire model lineup, 3 of which have this - any car with an LCD panel. Based on that, it could theoretically be fairly widely available on 2012 models.

I don't know how to direct you to the link but I cut and pasted this from the following link:

Toyota Announces Entune Multimedia System at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show

You can go to post #13 and there doug Coleman, Prius USA PM says:

No. This is totally new hardware- much of it from the ground up. It would be like you asking Apple to upgrade your iPod to an iPhone. But I have to ask, honestly, is it reasonable for a consumer to ask a company to accommodate such an upgrade?

Hopefully you can find the quote. Evidently it's not just a head unit.

Has anyone heard if the NAV system is still DVD based requiring a yearly $200 upgrade? Is there a better search function than on the present Audio/NAV system for USB/ipod input? Does the FM radio have better reception? There's lots of flap about the iPod/iPhone/Bluetooth interface but not much about how the rest of the system works. I'd love to see an operators manual. Can't wait to find out if the new conversational voice control allows me to tell it to play a song from my rather large music collection by just mentioning the name of the song like other competitve units can do.

It should. I expect the Prius to carry Toyota's latest technology. The others could be the 4Runner, Land Cruiser, Highlander, Camry, Avalon and Sienna... just a guess.

In Canada, the Prius still leads in technology. Our HS250h does not carry the same Technology Package as the US. Our tech package consists of LED headlights and nav (same as the CT200h). No wide view monitor, LKA, DRCC, PCS or AGPS. All of that is available at 2x the cost on a $60-70k Lexus.

Meh I can't say I'm surprised, but it still sucks! Entune seems awesome, and being a tech geek like myself it would be fantastic to have an app based UI in my car, rather than the dated system that ships with the current car.

I'm going to agree w/ the other Mods here - I would expect a refresh of the audio systems in 2012 - it's too late to see it in 2011. That said, if the physical dimensions are identical, I'd venture to guess that provided the AVC LAN specs are compatible and the pin-outs are the same (including USB), you MIGHT be able to pull off a swap. If it requires a telematics link-in for the NAV unit updates, you may be slightly more challenged - especially for early MY'10 vehicles.

I'd be highly interested to see if they are compatible, if Toyota comes up with a means of making it backward compatible, what the cost of the unit (plus install) would end up being.

What he is saying is that you cannot do a software upgrade to your existing head unit. You will need to replace your head unit with the new entune head unit (obviously), but that head unit should be backwards compatible with existing vehicles.

If an update to the NAV DVD costs $200 can you imagine what Toyota would charge for the OEM Entune replacement unit? I'm still not convinced it will be retrofittable. It's just not in Toyota's interest to do anything to upgrade the old NAV systems. They would have to charge too much and it would overload their techs. And how many do you think they would sell? Not many. Toyota is interested in selling new vehicles. No upgrades will be done for anything if it isnt for safety reasons IMHO.

Nope, no update that I'm aware of. As a guess, Entune may come when the car gets a "refresher". That isn't known either, but maybe 2012. The Gen II got its refresher in it's 3rd year... As for model year, you mean the 2012's or a new generation? 2012's as a guess, maybe October-Decemberish 2011. 4th Gen, who knows, simply too early.
