Adding smartkey door handle (rear or pass side)

    I also wanted one when I first got my II but now I'm so used to using the key fob for the other doors that I don't even think about it anymore.

    Still...if someone figures it out and I can find a $100 wrecking yard handle it would be tempting.

    I asked at the dealership today about adding it to the rear hatch, as I am a musician (like another member was also noting about himself) and frequently carry my equipment up to the back of the car.......just to have to go, "Oh, yeah!" and walk around to the driver's door, or fish out my remote... Very annoying to me. Nobody there had any clue how such a thing could be done, so they are calling Toyota tomorrow (was too late for them to call today when I was there) to see if it can be done, and what steps would be required.... They'll probably think it's a silly notion and just tell me it can't be done....but here's to hoping!

    Well, I've about decided the dealerships know less than we do... They called back today and said they had talked to their Master Technician today, and HE said that if I had the smart key unlocking feature on the driver's door, then the whole car had it, and I could unlock all of them just the same... Yeah, right. So, I ended up talking to somebody else who finally decided that only a V has the unlock feature on ALL the doors. They proceeded to say that they'd look into it and research it more (adding it to another door). He said that might be something where the car would have to be taken back to the port to have that added. What the heck does that mean? Taking it back to the "port"...?????

    Sigh.... model IV and above come with 3-door SKS (see Toyota Vehicles : Toyota Announces Prices for 2010 Prius / Toyota).

    As for customizing it to unlock all doors when you touch the back of the driver's door handle, you can do that on all models. The video at
    explains this.

    The port is generally where the car was unloaded off the ship. Your car's port is likely listed in your window sticker. In some cases (not just on Priuses or Toyotas), options such as floor mats are "installed" at the port. I remember seeing a segment on Motorweek about port installed options and IIRC, it showed clear bras being installed for instance. I've heard of much more elaborate port installed options than these.

    I too have thought about adding additional smart key sensors. The door handle might be the least of the challenges, however. According to the parts catalog section referring to the Wireless Door Lock components, there are three different antenna parts, and three different computers. The descriptions vary, but are rather cryptic. There are also two different door control receivers, although one is specified as Korean. Unless we can determine which components are used in the three-door smart key car, it seems rather iffy to just blindly order parts and add them to a one-door smart key car. The computer is over $500--rather daunting as an experiment. And especially since each configuration may use a different computer. I think someone with a three-door smart key car must be willing to find the part numbers on each of these components and share them with us.

    Going to a junk yard and getting one off the front door of a 2010 US Prius would be my goal. When you buy it to take everthing.

    And remember to get the computer as well. Do you happen to know where in the car it's located? I know other Toyotas sometimes have them under the center console. Let us know if you find one of these cars.

    It seems that one computer would be capable of operating all the doors if the appropriate wiring harness, sensors and antenna are installed. I don't know why each door would need it's own computer but I'm only using common sense here - I know it's a foreign concept to Toyota but hey...it's worth a shot.

    Without reading every post of this thread I seem to remember reading that the antenna and wiring harness are already there?

    If all it takes is a $199 handle with the sensor then I'm more than happy to give it a shot. Shoot I might go for it anyway and if it doesn't work out I'll just return the handle!

    Don't think each door has its own computer, but the single computer the car does have for this purpose may have firmware tailored to the car's configuration. I look forward to learning the outcome of your experiment!

    The dealer was useless (which is unfortunately what I expected from them). Every service staff member kept repeating "that's not available on the pkg III" like little parrots. Even the service manager.

    "I know that" I told them...I want to add it by replacing the handle assembly and try to hook it up.

    "Oh, you can't do that because it's not available on the Pkg III".

    Aggghhhhh!!! Neither are fog lamps, or homelink auto-dimming mirrors, or.... but people (including me) have installed them! Really!?!? Are they really that stupid or just too lazy to think outside the box?

    I AM going to try this - well, I'm going to have my husband do it :) but it might be a few weeks until he has the time to attack it. I promise I will report back if the project is successful or not.

    I think you hunch is correct. There are different part numbers for the computer depending on which model it is used in. They are all exactly the same price so I suspect the difference is just firmware or software settings.

    My '09 2 pkg has smart key on driver, pass. door and hatch.

    Shame it didn't come on 2 pkg '10's.

    I would absolutely love this functionality as well. I am completely inept as far as cars go, but for testing purposes, would it be possible to simply move the driver's side handle to the passenger side? Granted, it would be upside-down, but I don't know if that would matter.

    If any one has more talent than I and would like to try this, I would love to hear the results. Or if someone can post instructions on how one removes a door handle (safely!), I'll try it myself.

    Love my 2010, but this is the one thing I miss from my 2004!

    Just bumping this thread up to see if anyone has made any progress here in the last few weeks. This is something I'm very interested in and I've never been one who's afraid to play with things I probably shouldn't be touching;)

    I think I'll have some time on Wednesday evening, so if no one else has done it yet I'll probably try to temporarily move my driver's side handle to the passenger door and see if the SKS begins to function on the passenger's side.

    I figure that's a good (and cheap) place to start, although frankly the rear hatch would be much more useful to me than the passenger door.

    ^^ You'll need to move the whole handle over and not just the sensor. If I get my car back from the body shop soon, I'll try and test it too. But classes have started again so I don't have quite as much free time as I did during break.

    If you can make friends with anyone at the body shop you should see if they can help determine what part numbers would be needed for the passenger door handle and the rear latch to implement sks:)

    Well, I spent a few hours taking apart my Prius this evening and unfortunatly it looks like this is not going to work:( Here is how my evening went...

    I start by taking off the interior door panel on the passenger side door... I wanted to see if there was a connector there for the SKS wiring, and there was. I then took apart the driver's side door and removed the SKS enabled exterior handle and the wiring harness that went from that handle to the connector on the door.

    I took it over to the passenger side and didn't actually bother to install it in the passenger door, but just connected it to the SKS connector there, passed it out the window, shut the door, touched the 'lock' portion of the handle and... nothing happened.

    I figured I'm already this far into it and I didn't want to disassemble the driver's side door again later, so I purchased a two day TIS subscription to see if I could figure out where the passenger side SKS wires went and where they connected to the computer.

    I found out that all of the wires in the door went into one big harness that connected to a junction box behind a trim panel in the passenger side footwell. Then, from that junction box they were supposed to go to the certification ECU, which is also on the passenger side behind the lower glove box.

    Unfortunately, I discovered that in my car, the SKS wires ended at that junction box. The connector from the door's wiring harness contained the wires, but the connector that went to the ECU did not.

    Remembering my goal of not wanting to disassemble the driver's side door again I decided to go ahead and see if I could get the handle connected to the ECU. Unfortunately I didn't have any pins to go into the connector on the certification ECU, so the best I could do was temporarily connect some wires by stripping them and pushing them into the connector.

    Once I got everything connected I tried again and... still nothing. I suppose it's possible that one or more of the wires I was using didn't make contact because of the way I tried to connect them, but I spent some time working on this and I'm reasonably confident that it wasn't a connection problem.

    So, unfortunately, I suspect that our certification ECU either doesn't support 3 door SKS or isn't programmed for it. I'm not sure where we go from here... if anywhere:(

    I added a 5th wheel (spare tire) to the TPMS system on my 2006. The 3-door SKS may use the same mechanism.

    Specifically, the TPMS KWP message "82 2A F0 21 06" is a query that invokes the reply "84 F0 2A 61 06 x0 y0" where x and y are normally 8, which indicates that there are 4 sensors. When I sent a message "84 2A F0 3B 06 A0 A0" to the ECU, it changed to support 5 sensors. Techstream does not support sending this message, but it does support registering 5 sensors once the new setup has been established.

    If someone wants to experiment with this sort of thing on their 2010, you'll have to do low level programming for an OBD2 interface like an ELM scantool or J2534 interface. Issue a 21 type query for all possible PIDs (21 00, 21 01, 21 02, ... 21 FF) on a 2010 with 1-door SKS. Then do the same test on a 3-door SKS system. A difference in the replies is potentially the 1-door versus 3-door setup. Then issue a 3B command to the 1-door system with the data seen on a 3-door system.

    If the experiment fails, it could potentially require replacement of the ECU to recover. An experiment could probably be undone by simply issuing a 3B command with the original data. Your call.

    WOW! I think I'll just leave mine as is and learn to live with it! :(

    I did have my dealership change the way the door locks operate last weekend when I had my 1st service done. Grabbing the drivers door now unlocks all doors and the hatch. Not as convenient as being able to just grap the hatch and have it unlock and open, but it does save from having to fish the key fob out of my pocket or grap the drivers door, open it, and press the unlock button... Now as I walk past the driviers door I touch the inside of the door handle and it unlocks all the doors and the hatch and I just keep going and open the hatch. Easier than before, but still not 3 door SKS!
