Unintended Acceleration -- While Parking

I've seen drivers start to do that on several occasions! Usually when the left turn traffic starts moving they start accelerating as well, thinking the light is green! Normally they catch themselves and stop. This happens with Buicks, Fords, Hondas, etc.

 

Just as @peterjmc I have had MANY of these slight accelerations. Here is the situation: I live in Los Angeles so it's never very cold (if that matters). Cars been sitting in driveway all day and I need to put it in the garage. Start it up and slowly roll into the garage feathering the brake. Just as I'm getting close to the back wall the ICE kicks in and the car lurches. The first time this happened it scared the crap out of me because I wasn't expecting it. Now I know what and when to expect this behavior so it's not too bad. BTW when I say lurch, I'm talking maybe a foot.

 

How many examples of unintended acceleration can you find in the UK? any? europe? Japan?

So the common factor, with it's drive thru's, pull in forward parking spaces, no proper driving test, dangerous intersections and absolute prevelance of automatic transmissions which brings left foot braking and constant riding of the brakes plus the horrible creep feature, is, North America! Case solved.

Seriously, the creep is probably responsible for all of this. more than once i have been aproaching a roundabout, thinking i was gently riding the brake, and as i need to apply a bit more braking discovered i was gently riding the throttle. i didn't crash, i instantly realised my error and used the correct pedal. this happens because i am riding in the regen area, modulating my "braking" without even realising it. if no throttle was just coasting and you had to actually be on the brake for -any- braking, i would never have had this porblem. i supspect other people (such as gently rolling into a parking space at low speed) are doing the same thing.

As for the report of the fatality, that is sad. but no other report has the vehicle pull away on it's own from a standstill, they all involved vehicles already moving at low speed. it's far far more likely that the guy didn't look properly and just pulled out. that happens every couple of years over here with rail crossings. it can't really happen with roundabouts, they're much safer than intersections.

 

I am sorry. I know that the words are English, but the above string of phrases makes no sense to me.

 

Ok i'll break it down. Unintended Acceleration only happens in north america. north america breeds lazy, bad drivers.

 

Wow, looks like everyone active on PriusChat checked in on this one.

I have no comment about whether or not the car accelerated suddenly, but I would like to know how Toyota reacts to this. I'll be highly disappointed if Toyota's only response is a complimentary "thanks for your inquiry".

By the way, it's not clear to me how the local dealer responded.

We have an agency called VOSA which handles recalls, and EURONCAP which handles crash testing.

 

You're once again ignoring the fact that Toyota has been the subject of an intense media hysteria (exacerbated by the U.S. government) concerning UA in the last few years. Reading those complaints alone means nothing.

 

Yep, a group of cars and I nearly crashed a white truck when it made a left turn into our incoming traffic. It confused the green light on the opposite street for a left turn light and cut in front of us (fortunately, the PCS in my Prius assisted me). If it were a Prius, I'm sure someone would have reported it on NHTSA.

It's catching evpv's attention only because it's a Prius and he's trying too hard to validate "his friend's" account.

 

LOL, yeah, I went to the dealers to get some of this Unintended acceleration and they were clean out of it

I must admit I have experienced unintended less braking force when bouncing over a pot hole on a downward slope, it does feel like the servo has less effectiveness after a jolt, even when the pot hole has been cleared. All totally controllable though (press harder on brake pedal).

I have had two occasions where I have had to do an emergency stop from slow speeds (15-19 mph EV mode), one a pedestrian and one a guy opening his door as I was driving past, and in both cases the Prius has performed exceptionally well, leaving no one injured and no damage. I certainly can't fault the brakes on mine.

In both cases, the man sincerely believed what he said, but that doesn't make it true.

 

Maybe he was performing earlier with a KISS tribute band and was still wearing his dragon platforms. :rockon:

 

More likely it has to do with the legal system and litigious fortune seekers. Your statement above is delusional, but I understand a fiction like that helps some people feel better about themselves.

 

No, what flaninacupboard wrote is accurate. Other countries require extensive training and a lot more $$$ to drive. Here any idiots can get a driver license.

 

Nope, most Euro driver licensing standards are higher than ours and it shows in their driving.

Blaming the high percentage of incompetent US drivers on our legal system is what's delusional.

I'm beating a dead horse here, the original quote is the definition a troll. Those that cling to the notion that the population of an entire continent is inferior won't be swayed by anything I post here. I've witnessed plenty of dangerously bad drivers all through Europe and the UK, so I don't share that belief.
