We took a long trip past week, indiana to Oklahoma, roundtrip of about 1400 miles. Pretty much Interstates only and with 4 and luggage. Average speed 70 mph with 38 MPG according the trip computer. During my daily commute to work (65 miles roundtrip) I average about 40 mph with 46 MPG. Looks like there is a relationship between the two. Comments?
oh constructive comments... yeah that's absolutely normal. A little bit of extra weight will go a long way, or short way...huh?
The variance in the average mpg is correct, but how are you averaging so low overall? Not to insult you, but I think you might want to evaluate and change your driving habits. I've only owned my Prius for a few weeks and I've already almost completely altered by driving behaviors. When I come home from work at 1 in the morning (I work swing shift) I generally accel slow and take it easy on the car because there's no one on the road that would get mad being stuck behind a slow Prius. On the way to work, I don't go over 68 on the highway because it's uphill most of the way and I'd get horrible mpg if I went faster. I averaged 34 mpg on my first fill-up and now I'm getting at or above 50 mpg. Just some tips
+1, I was going to say he was at the bottom 50 percentile on the mileage bell curve, but I didn't want to hurt his feelings. No one wants to hear that they drive bad.
I think I phrased it nicely though, so it could be read as constructive criticism. But as I stated, I drove like an idiot and got worse gas mileage than he did when I first got my car a few weeks. Then again, I hadn't really broken it in yet and I was not used to keeping the vehicle within a certain set of parameters in order to maximize fuel economy. I like to think of it as a game. One that annoys pretty much everyone because I talk about it constantly. Haha
One big difference between his car and yours is his is a V and that means 17" tires, which does make a difference. I also have a V and I only average 46MPG in mine too. (calculated) There could be a lot of other reeasons why the other guy could be getting poorer gas mileage that has nothing to do with technique. One last question, is your gas mileage via the display or calculated? You might want to actually calculate it. My display is 9% higher than it actually gets...
For the 1/2 dozen or so times I've been on the freeway long enough to calculate mileage, I've set my CC at 58 (in town with 55 and 65 MPH limits), settle into the right lane and the milage runs around 62MPG. YMMV
