what SPEED do you usually go on the freeway???

Engineers at Consumer Reports magazine tested this theory by driving a Toyota Camry sedan and a Mercury Mountaineer SUV at various set cruising speeds on a stretch of flat highway. Driving the Camry at 75 mph instead of 65 dropped fuel economy from 35 mpg to 30. For the Mountaineer, fuel economy dropped from 21 to 18.

note that its even more extreme for the Prius.

 

It varies, one 12 mi. stretch I average 67 or 68, then I go through a town with a 45 mph speed limit and 4 stop lights, then a stretch of about 10 miles at 61, then 1 mile at 59, then 63 or 64 for about 12 miles, then 40 at the end. (I've had this job way too long. )

I commute 37 miles each way in heavy stop and go traffic in Los Angeles.
It's rare that I get less than 54 m.p.g. (hud indicated) Even with a 5% margin of error that's pretty darn good in my opinion! Lately I have reached 63 m.p.g. on several commutes.

 

The hit in MPG w/factory 17" rims has mostly to do with rotational mass - didn't seem to see anyone comment on this within this thread. The factory 17" rims are 24lbs - significantly heavier than the stock 15" wheels.

Also, 214/45/17 is what is listed as OEM, is .4" (24.6"dia)small in diameter than 195/65/15 (25"dia). I would have to think that the smaller diameter would also reduce your mpg.

true about the weight, but I've seen only about a 2mpg decrease with the V wheels and tires.

BTW - if you call Hubcap Haven, you'll see that they DO NOT have the V wheels; they should remove them from their site. they've been on their website for months and they've never had them.

im young and i wanted a Prius and didnt see myself driving one with the 15 inchs especially after owning a Mitsu Evo X!

We have touring edition wich give us 17 inchs wheel, fog light and LED lamps! And leather as option but its 1800$ and you dont even get the steering wheel in leather! What a shame! I think even with the non leather inside, the steering wheel should be in leather!

 

Man that SUCKS!!!! I guess it's time to look into other 17" solutions. I can't fathom paying that much for the OEM 17" wheels (though I have to admit I still like the look best) when you may be able to finder lighter weight alternatives for the same or less.

All nonesense the wheels get the same economy, I had the stock wheels and went to the 17". All I did (Costco) was remove the tire preasure monitor from the stock wheels and put them on the 17inch wheels. been using the car with the wheels for more than six months and my best has always been 49.9 mpg. Bunch of crap written here.

 

My best is 54.8 mpg, but this was through extremely careful driving and a bit of pulse and gliding. The ~1.7 mpg hit that you get by going to OEM 17" with 215/45 LRR tires seems about accurate. It's too stressful for me to get above 50 mpg by watching how I drive all the time so I'd rather just drive normally and suffer a hit of about 2 mpg.

 

I think your are not tracking your mpg and weather conditions accurately. Everyone else that does the math experiences a loss ogden mpg when swapping from oem 15s to 17s. Basic physics here.

 

I won't order s*it from Parts.com again. I ordered the chrome center caps for my stock rims and it took well over 3 weeks to get them. I contacted them twice and they kept referring me to someone named Robert Lee who works their Toyota warehouse or some crap. I ended up getting them (yes, a second set) off eBay for a fraction of the cost. Just an FYI for anyone that cares.

 

I've been looking for some 17" wheels that I like but I'm going to use 205/50R17 tires since they are the same 25.0" diameter as my stock 195/65R15 tires. I tried the 16" wheels from my 07 Matrix with 205/55R16 tires that are a similar weight & I didn't notice too much difference in my mpg but I was still learning to use the car since it was new to me.

 

Funny thing is, I've seen 3 different Prius cars on the road in LA that were not V or even IV models (projector halogen headlights, no sunroof, no rear camera, no leather), and they all had the 17" V wheels. 2 of them even still had the dealership tags on them.

Made me wonder if some dealerships around here are either offering some cars with this option for a markup, or if the owners actually requested for this option (and paid a nice markup for it).

 

My guess is that with the Prius shortage, dealers are probably slapping on the Five rims and then charging a pretty penny for them. I bought my Prius at the height of the $-for-Clunkers program, and dealers would add on ridiculous options just to jack the price up. Some even chromed out the stock 15s and charged $2k for them.

 

So is there any website that sell these 17 wheels? I know there are a few websites discussed in the past....but someone said those don't actually have it....anyone? I really want to have these wheels for my prius.....

 

I love the stock 17" wheels, but wish they weren't so darn heavy.

 

That concern is actually overstated, as unsprung weight isn't a big factor compared to rolling resistance and diameter in terms of fuel economy. For example, when our fellow member shawnb2 had the lighter Enkei 17x7 on he didn't see any mpg increased compared to stock 17x7. However, upgrading to 18x8 (even lighter than the 17" stockers) dropped the mpg like a rock.

Your complaint would be justified if your main concern is with regard to acceleration and deceleration as the heavier weight does slow them down.
