2010 MPG Stats - Post Them Here

Having returned from a 3000 mile trip to VA,GA,AL given the fact that the car was loaded with luggage, I did not expect the best mileage. The speed was mostly highway speeds in excess of 65-75 MPH. On average MPG was 48-51 MPG,which we were very happy with, plus the car handled great.

Back in NY with the cold weather, I'm lucky now to get into the 45 MPG now. I expect this to be normal until spring.

The first tank doesn't count, as you don't know how it was filled and how the previous test drives went. Get accustomed to the car, then starting looking at MPG at the second refill.

Seattle's best MPG season ended before you acquired your Prius, and my results have fallen significantly. You won't get the best results until at least next May.

We had about 100km on the ODO before I stumbled on how to get mileage to display: hit the trip meter (once or more?). The displayed mileage was initially at 6.2 l/100km. This is after unknown start ups at the dealership, and one test drive we did, involving one very steep climb. Over the next few days my wife did short local runs, it went to 6.1.

Saturday night we did about 30 km run into town, some running around downtown trying to find parking. About 50% on 80 km/h freeway and the rest on city streets. Getting home, it displayed 5.5 l/100km. Ok, improving!

Sunday I had to run another car in for a flat repair, and a couple of times my wife had to follow and pick me up with the Prius. So, short trips, no time for the usual blockheater warmup. Mileage ticked down to 5.4 l/100km. Starting to feel better.

Today, my wife ran chores, I see it's still sitting at 5.5 l/100km. It will be seeing similar duty through the week. Friday I'm going to run it about 20~30 km into New West for snows. Likely just get them test fitted, but not installed, just stowed in the hatch.

We've got concert downtown this weekend. By the end of all this, I'm hoping to push it down to 5.0 l/100km. Don't know if I can but will try...

And just for reference, the current 5.5 l/100km translates to 42.8 mpg. So far nothing calculated, just the display, which I understand is "optimistic".

 

My last trip was around 220 miles most of it on the motorway at around 70mph. The trip took around 5 hours.

We found the car great to drive, very stable in both high winds and heavy rain and it was very comfortable.

Considering the car is only 1 week old and has only 500 miles total we averaged on this trip 61mpg. I am very happy with this and the car.

25K mountainous miles at 6800 ft alt, 53+mpg long term.

This is a mix of around 'town' and mountain driving. We are in a very rural area with small towns - Colorado Four Corners - Cortez, Mancos - four-way stop is a social occasion.

For context; I ride road and dual sport motorcycles when weather cooperates; I have driven powerful cars, including son's dirt racers with 600+ horsepower, diesel pickup, etc. I also have an 87 Samurai that's less powerful than anything else I own but gets around in the woods.

Bought one of the earliest 2010 Prius in mid 2009. Wife drives locally and as far as across state thru mountains. I drive about 20-25% of miles with a similar mix, though I drive the long trips (1000mi+). Aug 2009 we did a blitz of 8 National Parks in 11 days - worked the Prius hard. Still exceeded 52mpg for that 5000+mi trip.

I keep track of every tank and check computer with long term average from my log book, never calculate on one tankful. I find the computer is accurate enough to believe, though I still record every fill-up and mileage. Most of these miles were before the switch to the synthetic blend.

We are NOT hyper-milers. In fact, I enjoy very much the impressive power of this engineering miracle. If you have never stomped the accelerator to the floor (always in eco mode) and enjoyed the result, please try it. The amazing thing is that if you hold the pedal down, the Gen III will continue to accelerate hard way beyond interstate speed limits. Plenty of passing power - just stomp it. I think pwr mode is just a changed accelerator curve, but read somewhere it might be less limited throttle plate opening angle. Maybe I'll try it.

To those who do not get these (long term) mileage results; maybe this car does better at speed than putting around. I find that the mpg meter tends to stay higher if I just get to highway speed and then cruise and let the technology do its thing. A fun pass (even hill climb passes) once in a while doesn't seem to overbalance the mileage floating along at 65-75mph. It must be very aerodynamic. I use cruise when I can, but over-ride it frequently. When on little local roads, I putt around using little of the eco accelerator curve - probably gentler than my wife does - but on 65mph road going somewhere, I mix cruise @70 and 'let er rip' passes.

Never had a braking problem and I've worked them hard on some rough, unpaved back roads. No problems.

Bottom line - great piece of engineering.

I just passed 1000 miles on my 2010 Prius and the average MPG read 48.5. My location is Albuquerque so we have a fairly mild fall. It will be interesting to see if the colder weather combined with more highway travel (ski season begins soon) impacts the MPG.

 

Just passed 1100 miles in my 2010 T Spirit (UK) and the car is showing an average of 61 UK mpg. After working the maths with the fuel uplift and miles driven I get an average of 54 UK mpg.
Considering the weather has just turned wintery here in the UK and the temperature has gone down to -5C this week, I'm very happy with this.

 

I have 2010 Prius almost a year and a half old. I live in Canada so almost 6 months of year in cold weather. My average MPG for the life of my car so far averaging winter and summer is 54 MPG. I am really happy with that!!

 

on my third tank of gas....averaged 57 mpg.....I am very pleased with the performance, ride, and comfort.....great commuter car......i drive a total of 80 miles to and from work....:rockon::rockon::rockon::rockon:

 

I'm mystified by the fuel gauge indicator - I filled up for the first time after 400 miles (mostly city, but lots of hills). There was only one bar on the gauge and the fillup stopped at 8.7 gallons - where are the other 3 gallons since tank capacity is supposed to be 11.9? Still, pretty good mileage (~ 45) ...

Even with EBH use in the morning, the severe winter mileage collapse has started. Down 9.3% from last tank.

Sad tank. 45.8 MPG. Display = 48.3. My first tank under 50 MPG. Cold weather blues here in upstate NY. Lifetime display still = 57.9 MPG (new Aug 19) for 14,323 miles . . . about 55 MPG calculated.

My 6th fillup yielded 48.2 calculated. My mpg's have been trending slightly down; 49.8, 52, 50.9, 49.4, 48.8, and 48.2, but the weather has gotten much colder over the past few weeks which I am accounting to the lower mileage. I blocked my lower grill over a week ago so hopefully I've stopped the downward trend.

 

New car, a bit more then 2 weeks old, 2 fillups, on chunky, heavy snow tires, and in temps consistently below zero since we bought it. I see regular 100+ miles stints of 45+ mpg already but those cold mornings really mess up the per-tank average right now.

I live in a very hilly area and, especially at highway speeds, those hills kill the mpg. I've actually found myself taking the "back way" because a steady 40mpg seems to really up that average.

2nd tank of gas just put in and running 42.9 mpg per the Trip Gauge, and 43.5 since purchased. I'm happy with that but am pretty sure with break in and more experience, I'll get better over time. Happy Holidays!

 

I am finding the winter kind of ruff on the MPG. I was down to 49 at my fill up today.

 

My wife purchased her 2010 in July. The best she's gotten on a tank is about 43. Average over the course of the last 2.5 months is mid 30's. The car has been a real disappointment as a result. Questioning the money I spent on it.
