2010 SEMA Show: Toyota Prius PLUS Performance Package

Looks like the used the same body kit as the 10th Anniversary edition from the UK market. I prefer the rims from the UK model though...

I wonder if the front anti-sway bar is the same diameter or did they increase it's size since they've added a rear anti-sway bar.

And now we have a third center cap to choose from if it fits the original rims.

Anyone want to take a bet on how much these rims will weigh each? My guess will be somewhere btwn 16 to 18 lbs.

 

Now how much would it have taken to add fog lights to that kit and really finish it off?

The wheels are very simular to some I am looking at...

I like the lowered suspension and rims but the body kit is barely noticeable. The "Plus" name also sounds like a toothpaste. Why not label it "TRD"???

 

This is a sport package right? Then call it that lol....

Overal servicability is important

12V battery monitor
More variety in colors especially exterior i.e. Yellow, lipstick red

With current solar panel technology, they are still not efficent enough for the size to
charge battery.

Factory winter front or something for fast electrical warmups - timed heating and cooling

Heated seats
Unity amoung dealer service departments and training.
Better interior lighting (current is yellowish)
Different Toyota logo / badging front and rear
Factory stabilizer bar ) front

Android app for car monitoring and control

Sport package: suspension, tires, wheels, brakes, tinted glass, badging, body trim, etc.

OK, there will be a Sport Package. Part of giving the Prius a broader
appeal I take it.

However, "sport" wasn't the reason the the Prius was developed and
initially marketed, in the face of industry criticism and popular
skepticism. The point of the exercise was, and still is I trust, ultra low
emissions and fuel economy. On top of this, "sport" is an incongruous
idea, approaching an oxymoron.

So, if there can be one special package, why not two?
There should be a companion offering that hews close to the line of the
original concept for the car, an aero/fuel efficiency package.

It could consist of these refinements, each having a small contribution,
but as a group could add up to 10% greater FE:
* Rear wheel skirts
* Temperature controlled grill blocks
* Disk wheel or wheel covers (Clear covers a plus)
* Complete under-car tray
* Rear diffuser
* Side skirts
* Front fender cover with splitter
* Aero antenna a la the Leaf
* Additional ScanGauge-like guage package w/X-guages

Nothing really special there, and I'd call it a job well done and an extra
cost OEM package worth having.

To be effective the exterior mods need to be brought together with the
help of a wind tunnel. Could it be that this is the real crux of a soon-to-
be sport package but no mention of a FE package? The sport package is
just an assemblege of parts, whereas an effective FE package would
require actual R&D = cost.

To go to the very leading edge on aero/FE would require a side mirror
delete and replacement with video screens and perhaps even an auto-
activating inflatable boat tail. I can't see that happening.

Lastly, the Aero/FE package needs a name. "Plus" would be a excellent
choice, but "Plus" has been redefined to mean "sport." I would propose
"Point," as low emissions and industry leading FE was the initial reason
or point of the Prius. "Point" also as the package would keep the Prius
out in front of the many hybrids that will be appearing soon, pointing
the way into the uncertain future.

The Point aero/FE pakage would also help the PHEV.

My two cents.

 

How about intakes and throttle bodies THAT likely would improve performance
and MPG?

aluminum or anodized engine components and covers?

programmers or chips?

 

NOT a performance package, but an appearance package. Aside from the rear sway bar, it's all about looks. If improved performance is the goal, modifying the ICE is the only thing that it is possible to do, except at the margins.

My brother, in the auto business, observed decades ago that among performance, reliability and economy, you can have one or two, but you cannot have all three.

 

so optimizing and improving fuel /air mixtures, timing and spark improvements doesnt improve performance, reliability and economy? Hmmm just as well go back to a carb and ol cam & valvetrain then? I disagree and history proves it.

 

I'm more interested in the go than the show. So, I'd say yes to the suspension parts and no to the body parts. Unless.....aerodynamics were improved, and the front came with a thermostatically controlled grille block.

But then, I don't have a 2010 anyway, and it's too late for port-installed options on previous models.

 

I would just settle for Anti-vehicle missile launchers in the front and anti-tail gaiter environmentally friendly k-2 jelly slick in the rear. I would pay $10k for that.

 

I had to look closely for the body kit, meh. I like the Kenstyle concept best so far, since it's not so stock and not so over-the-top. I won't complain, though, since it aftermarket is giving love to the gen III

Also: agree on the TRD badging instead of 'Plus', although with the caveat that you can see TRD all over Toyota's trucks. It might not be as culturally 'special' as other manufacturers, but then again, being in the aftermarket + hybrid brainspace is not for those timid of counter-intuitive challenges.

Perceptions are changing, if slowly. But yeah, calling it 'sport' is probably pushing it. A subtle little TRD badge would convey the right message without inviting mockery.

 

One option I wish they had on the Prius is a sport seat option (admittedly it wouldn't appeal to the over-40 crowd who buy a lot of Priuses) to replace the terrible stock seats with (for example) some Recaros (like the ones in an Evo, which have side airbags).

 

Hey, some of us are still skinny enough to fit Recaros. Oh, you meant age. Dude, have you ever seen an expensive sports car driven by somebody *under* 40? Like, who wasn't an athlete, or not driving his dad's car?
