Blizz is correct, start with getting the bids via e-mail and narrowing it down to the lowest, then start negotiating over the phone with the e-mail quotes you have received.

When you visit the dealership, they will try and get you to commit on the spot by asking "What will it take to make the dael today?" This is your opportunity to tell them to give you the best deal possible! Then tell them you have a couple other stops and other dealerships and that you'll be in touch.

I have sat on another dealer's lot and spoken with a salesman at a previously visited lot right in front of the current salesman. If they know you are serious about buying and they don't want to lose the sale to another dealership, they will deal...

I also had a salesman tell me his GM told me I should buy from the other dealer because there was no way they could match the deal I was offered. I took this as them calling my bluff, but it wasn't a bluff, so I left and bought elsewhere.

Another thing I do is get a copy of the quote even if you know it's not the lowest. I did this on my purchase. This way you have a copy for your records (and they can't change the numbers on you) and you have something to show another dealer if they think your bluffing...

Also, I really do believe you can get a better deal by shopping the last day of the month!

Lastly, be willing to accept a vehicle they have on their lot, even if it has more options than you initially wanted. They are much more apt to deal on something in their inventory. Especially if it's been on there lot for a few months...

I went looking for a Base III and ended up purchasing a III w/Nav because it was in the color I wanted and had been on their lot for a few months. I believe I actually purchased it for the price I would have paid for a Base III had they had to locate one, so I essentially got the Nav for free...

    Good advice guys, thanks.:yo:

I just talked to the guy that emailed me the lowest quote of $22,133 for a base model II with XM. I mainly wanted to confirm that I could also apply Toyota's current incentive of an extra $1,000 off. He took a second to look at what deals they currently had advertised... then he said he couldn't see that deal on their website any longer. He asked where I saw it. I told him I no longer see it either, but I printed it out and it clearly shows the expiration date of 11/01/10. (I can still visit the page as well by going back through my browser history. So it's still there, you just can't navigate to it.) He said if I have it then they will honor it.

That brings it to $21,133 + TT&L. I scheduled a test drive on monday the 25th. Do you think it would be a good idea to email him the link to that deal in the mean time, and ask him to provide for me in writing when I go in that they will honor that deal?

I'm trying to plan this out so I finish up at the end of next week, which is the end of the month. I'll maybe seem wishy washy after the test drive on monday.

I'm actually also considering doing something along the lines of what Paul did, which was to be interested in another car as well. Maybe I'll test drive a Yaris as well and mention that "this is what I really should be getting because it's so much more affordable. The Prius is nice but definitely more expensive." Then he'll try harder to get me into a Prius.

    Ron,

It certainly wouldn't hurt to forward him the link. That way you're showing him you are being upfront with him, kind of setting the example for the rest of the transaction...

Also, if you plan on looking at another car (or acting as though you are), make it a comparable model of a competing brand. I went and test drove a Honda Insight EX. If it's another Toyota, then they will shift focus and try and sell you a Yaris! You want them to stay focused on making the Prius the car you want to purchase from them! Remember, the salesman really doesn't give a crap what you buy, only that you buy from him!

Anytime you get to the point where you are negotiating at or below Invoice, the salesman is probably only making the $200 - $300 he gets paid per car sold anyway, nothing left for commission, so it doesn't matter if he sells a Yaris or a Tundra... Most also get incentives for the number of vehicles sold, so the more sold the better...

Also, whenever possible, deal with the internet manager, I have heard (not confirmed) that they only get a flat rate per vehicle sold, and if there is any additional incentive, it based on the number of vehicles sold not the price of the vehicle or how much above Invoice they sold it for... This is why the internet deals are almost always better than if you just walked in off the street...

Good point about checking out a competing brand instead. I think I will check out that Insight. I honestly haven't even considered any other car. I feel like I probably should though, just cause.

Considering Prius' 50mpg, great customer satisfaction/loyalty, and it's really not that expensive, it just seems so hard to beat.

I do happen to be emailing with the internet managers in most cases. That's interesting that they may only get a flat rate per car. Seems like that would make them better to deal with for sure because they have less to lose by reducing the price to get a sale.

Well... we just got our V + ATP for $32200... (before $1000 down payment "assistance", so really $31200). Not too shabby. Got a pretty fair price on our trade too.

Annoyed by the dealer adding "windshield treatment", especially since it already has hydrophobic glass... but was too tired by that point to argue about it.

    FMI,

Your OTD price includes tax, tag etc. I'm assuming.

Several of us who recently purchased our Prius's here on the east coast were finding before tax figures closer to $24,000 for the III with Solar. During the Summer in the Atlanta area you could have gotten one for $23,300!

    Just some food for thought.

Yes, it includes tax, tag, etc. Basically the selling prices is 24,867.72. Damn, I could stand to lose another $800?!

Truecar was showing Dealer cost of $25,642 locally here. So I thought I was doing pretty well. Oh well, I agreed to that price and so I will honor my words.

It may just be a good deal in your region as I am unfamiliar with the market out there. In the Southeast things are a bit more a buyers market.

Just bought 2 days ago the Prius II base Silver color (model #1223), only option added is the 200.00 carpet for 20488.00 and 0% Int. for 36months. Price was 21488.00 but with 1000.00 down payment assistance, it brings it down to 20488 net.
2 yr free maint. is included but tax and lic. are extra. Simply, it comes down to ~3300.00 off MSRP with 0% interest load for 36mon and 2 yr free maint.

I always thins that the Prius is too expensive and the money from gas saving will take years to offset the price difference of a similiar car (non hybrid - for example Camery for 19000.00). With the current promo, difference went from ~5000 to 1500 which makes me buy this car. I am not a green kind of guy who want to show the rest of the world that I am saving the plantnet by driving a Prius, I just want to save money.

I am sure the Prius is very much over stock (20,000 in US dealership in Oct.) as price is getting lower every month with the promo deals after promo from Toyota. Other model (e.g Camery 2010) is only in the few hundreds. It will probably be another 1000.00 cheaper after Nov. 1st but I just can't wait for another promo any longer.

Around the same time last year, price was MSRP and you are lucky if they don't put you on waiting list. Now I drove the car out in 2hrs after I walk in the dealership with no hassle. I did all the pricing via email. They are happy that I took it off their lot even through they are making only a few hundreds dollars profit only with the annual volume kick back. I always want a hybrid and I am so happy that I made the purchase. Thanks Toyota for the promo money.

Again, if you can wait for a couple more weeks, do it. After Nov.1. I bet it will be even cheaper. I hope I am wrong since I bought mine already.

Prices are on an increase according to TrueCar.com, so I'd say that is a good deal. A few months ago you probably could have done better, but at the moment I think it's fair.

Seems odd, you'd think the prices would continue to decrease on 2010's, but for some odd reason they have jumped up a bit! I purchased my Blizzard III w/Nav for $22,088 before TTL at the end of July, that same car is now being offered for $24,146 through USAA and TrueCar.com at the dealer I purchased from. MSRP is $26,825...

I think you got a really good deal. It's really hard to know when it's best to jump in and buy one...and when to wait. If you're happy with the color and packages at a given price, then there's no reason to wait. If you had waited, there's a good chance you'd end up with fewer options (i.e. a color you don't like as much or a Prius IV with items you don't want or need). What I'm seeing right now at smaller dealerships (in my area) is mostly Prius IIIs and IVs. That's fine for the right people, but the IIs seem to be selling out first. I think for anyone considering a III, IV or V, you might get the best deal if you wait.

Anyway, congratulations on your new Prius!

We dropped in at our local small-town dealer last night. They've got at least a half dozen II's and III's. We told the salesman cash, no trade-in. He showed us some numbers on his PC that he claimed were their prices, and we ended up with a quote on a white II with floor mats and rear bumper applique of $22441 after the $1000 rebate. He indicated that was basically their price.

Last night I thought that was a pretty good deal. After reading the last five or six pages of this thread I'm not so impressed. Maybe go back and visit on the last day of October.

I'd be interested in a III w/nav if we could get a price like some of you have!

Anyone with a crystal ball want to guess what'll happen in November if the dealer's still got several Prius'es?

I got the same car minus the bumper applique for $1330 less at the end of August. That was with the $750 dealer incentive. I'd guess you could do better than this particular deal, but that also might depend upon what the cars are going for in your region. I'd definitely start checking at larger lots in your area and I'd try to get a few internet quotes from those dealerships before returning to your local dealer. If they can't match those better deals, it might be worth driving a few hours to buy somewhere else. With just straight cash, you've got way more bargaining power than the average person. Good luck!

I paid $22,446 for a base model Prius III from a high volume dealer in Baltimore yesterday. Guy was straight up and gave me a price over the phone and in writing. I would be happy to send you his contact info if you are interested. As a side note, I live about 90 miles from that dealership, but it was well worth my time to drive there.

There have been some really great prices in the greater DC area (including Baltimore and Virginia). I used internet quotes from those dealerships to score a good deal in Pennsylvania about 70 miles from where I live. I got the same deal they were offering. If I hadn't, I guess I would have driven down to Baltimore or Tyson's Corners, VA.

For folks not fortunate enough to pay cash, posting the OTD price probably should include your total payments at the end of the financing term if you really want to compare apples to apples. But being on page 66 of this thread, it's a little too late to bring it up now! :)

I got a Prius III with solar, nav, jbl, leather, roadside assistance (rental) and the current 2 yr/25000 mile free service offer for $29,940 total payments (60 month term 1.9%). Sticker was $30,237, including $5,632 in options, +TTL. I was shown on paper a +$185 for my $14,000 trade in.

It had been on the lot since spring with only 45 miles and it was the exact one I wanted in both color (sand metallic) and options.

Bought a Prius III with Nav, with road hazard protection, key replacement service, 2 years of free service for $24,600 +TTL yesterday. The road hazard and key replacement for 3 years were both thrown in by the finance manager for free after we've already were done negotiating. MSRP was $28,900.

Just notice the promo 1000.00 down payment assistant from Toyota is only for California. I found this out in toyota.com -> PRIUS SHOPPING TOOLS -> local specials and enter different zip code. I wonder why Toyota treat California customer better.??
