Nissan Leaf 0-60 Time Now Official: 7 Seconds

No gas engine, exhaust pipe or gas tank. The only emission would be from electricity.

0-60 sounds really good. The electric motor power should drop from there. It would be interesting to find out 0-80 mph or 50-80 mph.

 

Of course they had to tow it home because the battery was dead.

 

I agree. At least for driving situations in California, 0-60mph is not really a major concern whereas 40-80mph numbers would be helpful. Rarely do you need to floor it from a dead stop to engage traffic but because of our extensive freeway system and numerous short on-ramps, power to easily merge with traffic or for passing is helpful.

 

Anyone remembered what EV-1's 0-60 time? In "Who Killed The Electric Car" they showed a clip of EV-1 out accelerating a 300ZX.

 

A quick search provides results ranging from 7.6-8 seconds or some saying "less than 9 seconds".

This document shows 0-50mph at 6.3 seconds.

Looking at the 1/4mile mph performance I would think the 0-60mph is closer to 9 seconds considering the GenII Prius can turn 78-79mph in the 1/4mile as well. <shrug>

 

8 seconds when you look it up. The 300ZX didn't have to be trying.

It would be nice if the 7 seconds was true, but I doubt it. Nissan could have drastically improved the drive train on the production cars, but earlier reviewers had them accelerating about as fast as our prii. Then again nisan could pretty easily put it in a more powerful motor for a leaf sport and really get it to 60 in that time.

 

7 seconds is pathetic for a full EV seeing how it has 100% torque at any rpm. The Tesla S does 0-60 in 4 sec.


Going to work today some guy in a white civic tried to race me from Grant Rd to H237. It's a straight shot from the stoplight to the highway, so it's very safe and makes for the perfect drag race scenario. Anyways, I never look at him but out of the corner of my eye I see him keep looking at me and turning his head. The light turns green and he floors it. In that split second my immature side surfaces and I think what the hell, so I floor it too. Anyways I took him. I don't think he knew a Prius can beat a civic ex from 0-60. Fool.

 

Actually, it only has full torque at low RPM. As RPMs rise, power drops off due to friction. The motor/batteries were designed for about 80 kW of sustained power. At lower speeds the car accelerates very well - though above 40mph acceleration started dropping off in my road test.

Let's see - you're comparing a $100k+ sports car to a $33k family car. The Tesla Roadster Sport has more than double the power output (215 kW) and twice the battery. It's no wonder it will do 0-60 in less than half the time of the Leaf.

 

Either that's an OLD civic EX or that fool didn't know how to drive. A modern Civic is quite fast regardless of trim, except for alternative fuel Civic like the Hybrid or the CNG. Majority of them are at least 1 sec faster than the Prius with the Si at 6.2 sec.

 

Not that great if you are into performance...or highway passing. No hard numbers/test results from Nissan, but just from about half a dozen test drives, it is around 8 seconds 60-80mph (+/- 1 second)

How is that ignorant? If anything you’re the one with the specious analogy. A hummer weighs almost twice as much as a Corvette.

The Model S will be estimated at roughly $50,000, smart guy.

It looked like a 2002 civic, so yes it was a bit outdated, and yes, the Civic Si is a sweet little car. But in any case, you’re still partly wrong.

Wow - you're comparing a car that's in production NOW (first production car rolls off the line tonight) to vapor ware.

Not to mention you're using the after tax-break cost, in which case we should be using the Leaf's after tax-break cost of $25k. The Model S costs twice as much and still doesn't do 0-60 in 4s as you claimed, but 5.6s - a HUGE difference in the car world.

Either way - the Model S will cost twice as much and accelerates significantly faster. No big surprise - you're still comparing apples and oranges. It's like comparing a 4-cyl Camry to a BMW 5-series.

 

Electric motors have full torque at zero RPM, but a small motor has less power than a big one, and the bigger the motor you want, the more you have to pay. My Zap Xebra SD does zero to 35 in 31 seconds. And it's a full EV. It just does not have a very big motor.

It's not as bad as it seems, though, because 35 mph is its top speed, so it's sluggish getting from 25 to 35. It does okay from zero to 25. Speed is over-rated: The faster you go the less time you have to enjoy the trip. Click & Clack advocate a 35-mph speed limit nation-wide. I think that makes a lot of sense.

This is correct, and generally true with most electric motors, at least of the type used for prime movers.

That is double Leaf's $25K. A better comparison would be Infinity's EV.

Anyway, Nissan's new Ellure may be quite quick ... let us wait for the LA show.
