I'm sure this question has been asked and answered, but wasn't sure where to look...

Can the car be stolen without the key fob within the car's sensor range and was taken when the car was on at idle?

If not, how long before the car shuts down knowing that the key fob is no where near the car?

    Thanks in advance.

Well sure, it could be put on a flatbed and hauled away.

However, the fob is needed to start the car but is not needed to drive the car once started. Too bad to.

    Hmm... that sucks.
A possible safety feature that's been overlooked or wanted to give an opportunity for thieves to take the car (even on a flatbed).

    Thanks though. Just needed verification.

Your Prius can be driven indefinitely without the fob, assuming it is in Ready mode. Once stopped it cannot be restarted without the fob.

Contrary to your comment, this is actually a safety feature. Having your Prius stop when the fob battery goes dead could have disastrous consequences.

Consider this scenerio: you forgot to lock the car and went into the mall; you came back and saw someone sitting in the driver's seat trying to (unsuccessfully) start your car; you rush towards your car ans screamed at the guy but, when you are 3 feet from the car trying to open the door and drag him out, the car sensed your key fob in your pocket and the car thief was then able to start the car and drove it away!

    THAT REALLY SUCKS:mad:

Ah! That's why the key fob has a panic button which when pressed, sounds the car alarm. (This was suggested in the Prius' owner manual). So you're not supposed to approach your own car but just press that panic button remotely far away. I wouldn't even identify myself to the thief or he might shoot me with his gun. Call 911 secretly instead, I guess, or should I wait till he left disappointed. Would he damage my car in frustration before he leaves?

I'm panicing right now with this imaginary scenerio in my head:(

The Prius also knows whether a fob is inside or outside of the car. I assume you have no intentions of climbing inside with the car thief.

Oh, so the car thief would not be able to start the car with me within 3 feet outside the car? Hmm, that's a relie...WAIT, what if I'm in the car starting to drive but the car thief opens the door and grab me throwing me out, he would then be able to drive it away cause I already pressed the power button?

MAN! I'M STILL PANICKING:mad: THE PRIUS SUCKS:(

Oh wait, that'll happen to any car even with a mechanical key. Ok, sorry Prius doesn't suck.

well if you were being carjacked AND if it could be done surreptitiously, hit the power button on leaving the car then run away with the fob in your pocket.

Please! It's just a car. If someone yanks you out of your Prius at gunpoint, let them have the car. I would give them the damn keyfob from my pocket.

Insurance will replace the car. Insurance can't replace your life.

Don't forget to puch him in the face a few times, and spill your drink in his lap too. :)

ok... so who's going to steal a prius???? don't get me wrong, but I don't think a prius is in hot demand by the criminal underworld LOL... Anyway... you treat your prius like you would any car. You shut it off when you get out. you lock it when you are not in it. if you are getting car jacked, you give up the car or you fight (not advisable to fight).

If your car gets stolen... you got insurance (hopefully).

Sounds logical and there should not be a high demand for prius or its parts. Anyone aware of theft statistics for prius?

I'm more worried about my prius being broken into than being stolen. I'm a full time medic with a full set of fire gear and medical equipment as well as my macbook pro usually being in it since I'm also a full time student. When I lock the door, sometimes it'll beep twice instead of once, and then when I set the solar roof to turn on, it beeps again. There is no good way to just check if the door is locked because if I walk up to it and pull the handle....... it'll open because of the fob in my pocket.

Sometimes you just can't win. (not complaining though because my prius is the [insert positive expletive here])

Easy to solve. Just make sure your Glock 22 is loaded up with Winchester PDX1. Pop pop, problem solved.

Sounds messy in so many ways, like jail, your pic in the paper, etc... but I know you're J/K .... right? :D

anyhow, Wonder what would happen if jacker gets in the car, powers it up, meanwhile, you take your keyfob and hold down the red panic button. Hmmmm. ... make the car beep loudly while they are driving away? :)
