There's a bunch of experiences to document and many, many photos to share...

This was my longest drive with the PHV between plugging in to recharge:

Shortly before the PHV departed, I took it for an EV spin to the drive-thru:

Notice how the engine was used only briefly during the previous 18 miles:

A moment I always wanted a chance to photograph... and got with the PHV. Notice how fast the Prius was traveling with the engine completely stop, using only electricity:

A good idea the 'EV Driving Ratio'.

John, I think the most geek-valuable picture was that 60mph no RPM photo - thanks! The rest are pure gravy though!

EV / HV ratio is what it is all about. Short trips will be mostly EV (if not all). Longer trips will be 50/50. Even longer trips will have more HV miles.

Short trips are the MPG killer and polluter. Covering them with a small PHV premium is logical. Charge often, save money.

Did you try going faster? I thought Evan confirmed the max speed with ICE off was 65 MPH.

One thing to verify here--is this the corrected speed or the raw reported speed? I've found that the reported speed that the car broadcasts isn't necessarily compensated for tire size and such (thus one would need to run the "Scangauge calibration" prior to the run). At higher speeds this offset is far more noticeable.

Yes. Evan and I confirmed 65.
First, when we were carpooling in Torrance and again when we individually had the car.

Off topic, I wonder if the next gen HV will also glide up to 65 mph.

The set of circumstances with lighting, location, traffic, and having enough EV available all within the brief time I had the PHV along with all the other stuff I wanted to do made capturing that moment unrealistic. I'm thankful for what I got. Fortunately, I did actually witness faster.

Then, what would you call this...

Nice! You didn't happen to have MG1/2 RPM XGAUGEs in there?

Adrian - do you have MG1/2 XGAUGE, or is it readily documented? I'll have an SGII in hand tomorrow and would like that info.

Oh yes on the Google Doc I maintain:

    https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AiHL0r_2nhUEdF9lVVBxOVNoN3Zva3E0NmdZTUR1eVE&hl=en

Of particular interest would be MG1/MG2 RPM and AMPs. Also MG1/2 torque could be interesting too.

I would love to get my laptop connected to a PHV as I bet there are more things we could find out. :)

Simple math tells us these numbers. :)

    ring gear rpm = 1000(m/km) X 60(mph) X 1.609(km/mile) X 3.267(final gear ratio) / ( 0.634(m tire diameter) X PI() X 60(min/hour) ) = 2639 rpm
    MG2 rpm = ring gear rpm X 2.636 = 6957 rpm
    MG1 rpm = ring gear rpm X 2.6 = 6862 rpm

This would be the "typical" round trip for a lot of people. My data came from a survey done by an insurance company.

52% of the accidents occur less than 5 miles away from home. 70% occurs within 10 miles from home. This indicates majority of the trips are very close to home.

From that perspective, 13-14 miles EV range is sufficient for many "typical" trips. Once more charging stations are installed in more places, opportunity charges will really benefit PHV Priuses. Save money, charge often and use common sense.

    And that leaves... Uhhh, 100 - 52 - 70 = -22% that occur greater than 10 miles from home? ;)

(I'm going to just go ahead and assume that somewhere, a mistake was made such that the 70% statistic applies to 0-10 miles, not 6-10.)

Thanks for pointing it out. To be clear, I made a Google Spreadsheet with charts. It has limitation from showing the percentage number on each bar so I made a pie chart. If you want detail breakdown, see the actual spreadsheet.

If the pie chart is smaller, are there less accidents ?

    Fast Commute

It was a beautiful Summer morning. I couldn't believe I was about to embark on a historic voyage. It was the usual time I leave for work, taking the usual route, but not the usual Prius. This time, I was behind the wheel of a plug-in.

The PHV model has promised great potential. In a few moments, I would witness it firsthand. Yippee!

14 miles of EV capacity were available. I was about to jump onto a 70 MPH highway (after a 3 block suburb drive) and travel at roughly that speed for about 9 miles.

2.5 miles into the drive, the display revealed 72.7 MPG. Not bad for a fast acceleration & merge uphill. By 4.0 miles, the Prius had a chance to glide down the hill... pushing efficiency above the maximum display value of 99.9 MPG. Reaching the end of the 70 MPH portion of the commute, the engine shut off. I managed to snap a photo of the ScanGauge reading 58 MPH with 0 RPM. Sweet!

Just prior to reaching the parking lot at work, the final electron available from the EV sub-packs was consumed. The system reverted back to HV mode. I parked, snapped a few more photos, then took a closer look at the aftermarket gauge again. It revealed 160 MPG so far.

Time to return back home. At 25.3 miles of my 33.4 mile round-trip, MPG dropped below 99.9 for the first time. I watched with much anticipation, wondering what that final value would be. Upon pulling into my garage at home, it stated exact 80 MPG. Looking at the gauge for a second opinion, it said 76 MPG. Maximum travel speed was 72 MPH. Maximum engine speed was 3,917 RPM.

Overall distance I've travel so far 83.6 miles displaying and overall average of 79.3 MPG. That's fantastic!
