Anyone try an aftermarket exhaust system on their Gen III yet? I know some are claiming 20+ hp, but I'd like to hear some 'seat of the pants' experiences.

If so, why wouldn't Toyota do it?

Also the exhaust system of the GenIII Prius is more than just an exhaust system. It makes the heating system more efficient as well, so swapping it out might be more complicated then you think.

The factory exhaust system on the Prius is already optimized. Any gains will be at the expense of other losses. As for claims, manufacturers make all sorts of ridiculous claims to get your money, especially for devices that only work through the placebo effect.

    More noise = more power.
    Isn't it true?

Deltron has a Tanabe exhaust system installed on his Gen III. You might want to ask him about performance vs. tradeoffs.

    Of course. ;)

One alternative is to burn the file below to a CD and play it in the car while driving. :D

Is the 20hp a strawman or did someone with a smattering of credibility actually claim a 20hp improvement? Sounds(pun intended) like a strawman to me.

I have the Tanabe exhaust, definitely doesn't seem to have hurt the performance...can't fully back any performance gains, although the car feels (and has been reported by other gen 3 owners who've driven my car) like there's more "go" from the engine at highway speeds. I received the part from Tanabe's R&D session, so consider your goals in money spent on the part. The exhaust looks really good, sounds really good (isn't too loud, ICE kick-in is subtle), and performance-wise has no apparent negatives on mpg. Very fun, very classy compared to many "fart cans" out there.
Now if you're looking for huge performance gains of 20hp, wait until there's tested and retested data, because right now all you have is my opinion, which is to be taken lightly. All in alI I dig it.

Maybe a optimistic (very) at the crank. Certainly by the time it gets to the wheels, it would be more like 1-3whp. The exhaust systems I've seen for the Prius are mainly axle-back styles so its really just replacing the muffler part of the system. The heating and the cats are further up towards the front of the car (nearer to the motor) and aren't touched by aftermarket systems.

OK jeez people, I asked if anyone has TRIED an aftermarket exhaust system, not what a bunch of grumpy old men thought about them. I don't care if you have had a bad experience with kids in souped up honda's driving around your neighborhood making noise.
So, is everyone saying that aftermarket exhaust systems just don't work? On any cars? Or just the Prius?
I'm not claiming huge HP increases, I was just asking if anyone had any actual experience with a Prius aftermarket exhaust.

    Thank you deltron.

What people are saying is that the Prius is a highly optimized system. In older, cruder cars it was easy to extract a bit more performance or mileage, since the car companies had little incentive to make them better. The Prius, on the other hand, is all about optimization: low emissions and high mileage. Toyota has expended a ridiculous amount of time, energy, and money extracting every drop of performance from your Prius.

What this means is that it is highly unlikely that you can bolt on some after-market part and expect to see improvements. If you do get an improvement in one area, it will come at the expense of a reduction in another. Improved horsepower will hurt mileage or emissions. Improved mileage will probably burn the valves in your engine. All of the low hanging fruit was harvested low ago.
