whoops ... grammar/punctuation ... not as easy as hyper mileing thanks ... I fixed it I think Ken and the japanese hyper mile group even got 1K miles in the Gen II.
I'm trying for 800. Silly, I know, but one must have goals. As I get closer I think I may put a small portable gas tank in the trunk as a backup. I think maybe because of the lack of a bladder, you can get more fuel in a Gen III than a II?
IF your Tank MID says average of > 64 mpg then I'd feel pretty confident not putting it in till you are over 700 miles. It really can stink things up though. Maybe wrap the portable up really good in saran wrap or something and put some scissors in the car to cut it if you need it. Of course, keep it out of sun! Can't wait to hear how you do! Good Luck!
I've got some that seal really well. I carry them in an airplane sometimes. the MID is at 68.? at a little over 300 miles so far. It took 239 miles for the first chicklet to go away on the fuel gauge. I started with visable fuel in the neck. 12.5 gl x 64 MPG =800 miles. I'm having to take both kids to school and the wife to work as she broke her ankle, so I'm putting in more tan 100 miles a day and over three hours of driving, so it may not take long. Next week the kids have school off, the wife is a teacher so no real driving next week. I think I can make it so the gas tank goes with me on the last trip, when I get to the blinking pip, I'll put the can in. Silly isn't it? I think I have 12.5 gl usable, time will tell.
Seems like your math is correct if you keep up the MPG. I think you'll make it. When you get that beep on the last pip when it starts flashing you'll still be driving another 130 miles or so before running out so don't put in that can too early! Maybe I'll top off next time but I just haven't been able to make myself do it yet.
I just passed 700 miles on one tank today for the first time. I'll add more miles and fill up tomorrow but right now I'm sitting at 702.6 miles, 79.3 mpg "displayed", 21 mph avg, 1 pip left and DTE is 31. Tire pressure 37/36 psi. I'll post the actual numbers as soon as I fill up. Temps have been 79° to 98° with dew point from 68 to 85 (very humid) and south wind consistently @ 15 - 20 mph. Note, I never "overload" the tank, IE, I stop filling at the first pump shut off, always, every time. This gives consistent results from tank to tank. I need to find a 2 gallon jug so I can carry a reserve and try for 800 miles. I didn't want to start a new thread so I woke this one up just in case Bob is still tracking this.
Holy Hanna Batman! :jaw: 700 miles and counting VERY impressive Mark!!:cheer2: I'm headed out early tomorrow for a 1800-2000km trip and am interested to see what I can get for mileage and tank distance on this first longer type road trip. I don't expect any where near 700 miles (1126km) but I'm thinking I should be able to get close to 600 miles (965km). I've done 627 (1010km) but that had a fair amount of town driving. Good luck with the 800, wow that is just scary mileage buddy.
Thanks Dan. Most of my real road type trips have averaged 55 to 58 mpg and I usualy filled up early rather than later since you don't always know where the next gas station will be. The last 100 miles of this tank will be within ~30 miles of my house so I'm not as nervous about running out at a bad place. When the last pip disappears, I will have a spare 2 gallons in the car just in case it runs out sooner than anticipated. Note I don't want it to run out at all.
i've read a lot of you guys are topping off your tank. that is very unwise. not only are you risking fuel overflowing out of your tank and destroying the paint, but every top off is releasing more gasoline vapor into the air, not something we need.
Now I see why I am having such a hard time getting much over 60 mpg. My average mph is always over 40 for the type of driving I have to do. My best tank so far is 65 mpg HSI , pump says 2-3 mpg less.
That's another reason why why I said "Note, I never "overload" the tank, IE, I stop filling at the first pump shut off, always, every time. This gives consistent results from tank to tank." in my post above. Yes, it makes a big difference. That's why I can't do these attempts at any time. Schedule has to be right.
What are you all doing to get such high mileage? Is there a link to another thread about this? I want in...
50-60mph seems to be the sweet spot for me. Drive at that speed range and the mpg meter is constantly in the middle between 50 and 100 mpg.
wow congrats!!! Dan_bo, I managed to squeeze out 4.2L/100km on a 659 km tank through the Rockies. 4.3L/100km for the rest of the trip to the coast (750ish km).
Ha I saw your comments in July Fuel page, not bad at all! Enjoy Do live out west?? or are you on holidays? For some reason I thought you lived around the GTA. I'd take the hit on the MPG to always having that scenery around me.
Very impressive....I will have to see if I can beat the 600 miles that I am averaging at the moment. That is pretty tough in the DC area and I don't know if I can hit the 700 mile mark but I am willing to give as they say "the old college trial."
Thanks guys. I'm starting a new thread in a moment since the title of this one no longer applies. hint, hint.
