Would you risk a vacation in Dubai?

Evan, I'm sorry. I was reacting to "what I'd heard" rather than investigate for myself. :(

I'll go sit in the corner now.

This is the same reason I don't vacation at Disney World. It seems to be a great place, and a lot of people like it, but for me it is too artificial. I'd rather see the utility structure underneath. At least that appeals to my engineering side.

It's not that I would hate visiting Disney World or Las Vegas, it's that I have limited time and resources. I probably won't live long enough for those to get to the top of my list. Dubai sits at about the same ranking in my personal list.

I would rather go to my local "Home Depot", buy a couple 50 lb bags of white sand, spread it around the Living Room, and turn the heat up to 120°'s.

A least I could drink a decent case of cold beer and not get flogged!!!

Unless the wife sees what I did to her floor....

A behind-the-scenes mechanical tour? That would be awesome. :)

Dubai is not at the tip top of my list either, but given time and opportunity, and a great discounted price like the OP suggests I certainly would entertain it. I guess I just get offended/disappointed when the direction goes toward bashing of a culture/people/place that likely none of those bashing have been to or taken the opportunity to truely learn about. Some of the most mundane sounding places on earth have turned out to be some of the most eye opening and impressive to me in my travels.

In hindsight, perhaps that's how I should have phrased it the first time. I really had no intention of bashing anyone or anything - certainly not an entire country or a whole culture.

Given unlimited time and an unlimited budget, then sure, put me on a world cruise and make sure it stops in Dubai for at least a day so I can take pictures of the architecture. And timing it to see the F1 race would be neat, too.

I have friends who lived in Dubai for years. Not that it's a daily topic of conversation, but they've shared a few small insights into life there that could not be gained from the average tourist brochure. Nothing against the place or the people, or travelling to unfamiliar territory and gaining unexpected experiences, but there are, quite simply, other places I'd rather go first.

At one time (long ago, apparently), behind-the-scenes mechanical tours were given at Disneyland. I went on one approx. 1972 as part of a high school field trip.

Don't believe all you read in a tourism promotion brochure either. There are news reports that contradict some of what is glossed over in the brochures. Dubai is not Saudi Arabia or Iran, but neither is it Lost Wages....

But remember some of those "celebrated" cases are the exception (and thats why they got so much media). Like the guy who was going to be lashed in Singapore for littering ?

Seem like Dubai is trying to attract tourism, it will likely you can do all the drinking in the hotel bar, or hugging and kissing in the hotel lobby without problem, but don't do it in the local public street. Just respect their law.

But that's the point - you can't hug or kiss or hold hands in the hotel! If a local objects, to jail you will go!

It was obviously the woman's fault, since she wasn't wearing a burka.... Harlot (afterall, she did (by her own admission) engage in sex outside of marriage; it just wasn't consensual)!

Allow me to drop the other shoe.

The more repressive a government/society is, the less due precess they have. Your odds of getting falsely accused and convicted are higher in more totalitarian societies.

And by being a tourist in Dubai, your money supports the repression.
We always need to understand where our money is going and what it is supporting. Our voice in society is more than voting every 2/4 years.
We vote with our dollars every day.
