Just as a caution, when removing the lower glove box to replace the cabin air filter, when replacing the box, be careful to align it properly in the hole with the tabs in their slots (on the dash). I manged to get mine in with only one tab in place causing the box to become lodged closed and unable to open. Having no apparent means to open it, I gave it a good tug and managed to break off one of the plastic tabs that hold it shut!
The unit seems to be completely sealed so it looks like I will have to replace the entire unit.
Anyone know of a salvage place selling 2010 parts yet?

Bummer! :( that's not so good, hope it isn't to expensive. I have noticed that it is kind of fiddley and easy to get in wrong. I'm probably lucky I haven't broken mine, had it out several times looking for rattles.

Thanks T. I was a little short on patience too. I should have just left it closed until later.
Going fishing tomorrow so it will be my first long drive in the car (~400 miles). Looking forward to it.

That's a drag, but thanks for the heads-up as I haven't tried to remove mine yet. Leave it for now and enjoy the fishing and the drive.

Thanks Dan. Mine is just a year old but the filter was quite dirty and stained black to my surprise. Probably have to replace it altogether soon.
    Well off fishing... ta ta.

My dealer managed to do the same thing you did...they had to replace the whole unit. Not sure what it costs.

Thanks for the warning spiderman. I have noticed when replacing mine that it would be easy to not align everything just right before popping it back in place. I did not realize that pieces could pop off that easy. Will be more careful from now on.

Go to XVIPERS.com - they are a salvage yard with bunches of 2010s, and reasonable prices. 573-437-2292 - ask for Mike.

Ya that catch mechanism isn't very well thought out. My first time was lucky I guess. Damn thing wouldn't close properly after I finally got it dropped. So instead of more force like I usually employ, I investigated and found that Rube Goldberg soft-opener had come undone and jambed. Finally einsteined the box closed which was actually tougher than dropping it to get to the filter. Cripes! :(

Thanks for the info. I did find the site but really didn't see much for the 2010. But I will give Mike a call and see what they can track down.

I don't care about the glove box, I want to hear about the fish and the 400 mile drive. :)

Now you are talking! So I took off @ 7:00am drove 167miles (48.7mpg) to meet my bro (he as the boat) and his friend. We drove another 60 miles to the river (see photo). Launch and fished for 6 hours. It took longer than usual but we got our limit (90 total Sockeye salmon, see photo). Made it home @ 1:00am. 467 miles total, 51.9 on the display. Not as good as I was expecting, but there was a lot of mountain climbs. For a car, it make a fine fishing companion. I had my 90 quart cooler in the back along with camping and rain gear, boots and some food without the rear seats folded down.
The last photo was taken @ 11:00pm. Got to love the long Alaska days. I am tired!
Oh, the car no longer has the new car smell! :D

Great, glad you had a good time. Enjoy the fish.

I think your mileage is pretty good considering the terrain.

I've had trouble getting mine off and back on too. Somebody should make a "how to" YouTube video.

There's a trick to it. When putting the glove box back in place you have to hold it perfectly still and move the car.

Depends on the ambient temperature and the percent of grade.

Alllrighty than... $400 for a new lower glove box (from the stealer,,, err dealership), and even $231 at Parts.com, I figured I better put on my thinking cap.
Since the glove box is sealed, I had to cut into it. On the inside top edge, I used a knife and carved out a 1/2" by about 3" slot to get to the locking mechanism (see first photo). I was then able to glue (gorilla) the broken tab onto the shaft (see second photo).
Before putting back into the car, make sure the locking tab on the other side is sprung out. I didn't and after putting the box back in, it was stuck once again. So I had to break the newly glued tab to get it out. It is now gluing again and I suspect all will work and fit nicely tomorrow.
The only issue now is how to cover up the hole. I plan to glue the piece back in and perhaps cover it up with that 3M reflective tape (white). Any other idea? Again this would only be visible with the glove box open.

I'm surprised the glue is strong enough to hold it, good job if it works. I'd just do what you said and put tape over the hole, it's inside so that would be fine.

Nice thing about older cars, enough of them get wrecked so you can get stuff from junk yards.

Have you seen the youtube video on how to replace the cabin air filter? (YouTube - Toyota Prius Cabin Air Filter )

I am new so it would not let me post the link but it is easy to find.
