I know, it's been said and done, but I'm still a little confused about getting a replacement key.

I have a 2009 Toyota Prius, love it, but I only have 1 key, and I need another (fob?) as a backup. I've seen plenty on ebay for $60 and I am wondering if it will work on mine (Black logo)

Do I have to take the key to a dealership and have it programmed, or can I do it myself/with a locksmith?
    ** I already have a fully-functional remote- I didn't lose mine.
** I hear I can program it myself. How?
** Is it 100% foolproof or is it a 1-in-a-million thing?

    Thanks!

I'm interested as well. I found out yesterday there was only one key included with my car I bought on the 5th. I'd like to get a backup key as well. They offered to get one at their cost, $150.

The black logo fob is a non-SKS fob (you have to insert it in the dash slot). You can do your own programming for the non-SKS fobs, including used fobs.

That's a good price for a fully functional FOB...take it.

I bought a 2004 in April last year and it only had 1 FOB. The salesman offered to let me buy a second one at Employee price ($180) including programming...I did.

I bought my wife a 2005 last month; it came with two FOBs. After a week, we determined that although the second FOB worked fine as SKS, none of the buttons worked (lock/unlock/alarm). We took it back to the dealer and he replaced it at no charge--AND he let us keep the old FOB.

From this we can guesstimate the profit margin for FOBs to be more than 100%.

The old FOB is useless on any other Prius...so why not let us keep it? It won't be any advantage to him to keep it...just a throw-away.

Tom's comments should be enough for you to get started. There are other PriusChat threads on the details. Just do a search. Good luck! :)

$150 for a factory FOB and programed is ok! Don't look any more. I paid $80 for a Dodge non sks FOB.
