I am aware that food intake, as well as body metabolism, are very complicated, and that there are multiple strategies for controlling what and how much we eat, as well as for influencing our metabolism. But all those are, at root, ways of addressing the bottom line, which is calories in vs calories out.

I think we are agreed that when we try to control those factors with drugs, the long-term results are uniformly disastrous. Some of them produce short-term weight loss. None of them produces long-term health. So we're back to self control (which at present I am lacking in). I get my regular exercise, but I'm still a compulsive overeater. At least I know that drugs are not the answer to that. I am convinced that a girlfriend could supply the emotional balance in my life, which would address the main cause of my overeating. But I also know a girlfriend is not in my future, and I need to deal with my issues myself. After my next trip, that is: Hiking in the mountains of beautiful B.C. :D

There is no such place as the "SierraS." The name is already plural and is akin to saying "mountainses." Such a printer said Goudy, will letter-space l o w e r c a s e type and steal sheep. Dismantle the pens, release the sheep and refer to the Sierra or Sierra Nevada.

The microflora in the gut also has a significant impact. Some people are more able to absorb calories from food due to the makeup of the microorganisms in their intestines. This is thought to be a factor in the prevalence of obesity and overweight.

Depends on the girlfriend. In my experience, estrogen levels in the household are not always a balancing factor. ;)

And as for the hiking, that's about the best emotional therapy going. I'd meet you on the slopes in BC next week, but I'm heading to Banff. :)

+1. At some point, calorie restriction will result in weight loss. There are different points for different individuals, but across the board, at some threshold, calorie restriction results in weight loss. It is called starvation.

I'd even go one further than hyo there... Turn that hiking into a week long (or longer!) backpacking trip, and you'll be amazed at how it helps! I find trips like that provide abundant exercise and a limited diet (since you only have what you brought with you - there's no options to run out for a Wendy's frosty or anything), and can be a great spring board towards better habits.

Plus after a trip like that... I always come back in a better emotional frame of mind.

Weight issues and regional sensitivities aside, I don't think any online dating site is worth the money - even the free ones. The premise is that you're saving time by filtering out the complete basket-cases, but what seems to happen is that the filtering process goes to the other extreme, i.e.: almost everyone filters out anyone not meeting the strictest standards.

In other words, basically everyone is hoping to hit the jackpot and bag someone completely out of their league - or is looking for someone too perfect to even exist...

The difference from traditional dating is that the pool of candidates online is seemingly infinite - so there is no process of elimination whereby you would work your way down to a realistic level. That's not really an issue for the 1% at the top of the food chain, but the rest of us are spinning our wheels.

Those aren't the only problems, but that's the core issue - and all of the profit models are built around it. They get paid the longer you're single, not the sooner you connect with someone in a significant way.

Yup. And in my case my doctor's guess was that HCG would be good for me. He wrote me a prescription - I just filled it at an online pharmacy in India.

Wow. You must live in a really scary world. The HCG that I got from India was pharmaceutical quality, professionally packaged, and had the intended action.

It isn't necessary to replace HCG with dangerous substances in order to sell it at a low price. The expensive part of getting drugs from India is reliable shipping. That costs about $25. Hucog 5000 IU costs about $15 for a two week supply. The price in India is government fixed at Rs 425, about $9. Selling a $9 product for $15 seems to be an attractive deal for some pharmacies in India. I'm certainly not going to cause them any trouble over their excess profits...

And where do you think Wal-Mart gets those cheap drugs? I'm just bypassing companies like Wal-Mart.

The FDA would have you believe that Canadian drugs are dangerous, uncontrolled substances. BS like that doesn't build much respect. And I observe that the drugs made and sold in India appear to be every bit as high quality as found here. A lot of that is due to the fact that German and Swiss pharmaceutical firms sell the same products in both the US and in India. The US is a big player, but not the only game in town.

Necessary, but not sufficient. As you get older, hormone systems tend to weaken and become less effective. Blood testing can identify problem areas. And hormone supplementation back to youthful levels can maintain health at a higher level than would otherwise be the case.

Gaining a few pounds each year is quite common. And HCG is a tool that can be used to reset that gain back a few years.

Well, my scale thinks I have. And yes, a big part of losing weight is cutting back on calories. Like about 500 calories total a day. What HCG does is to mobilize fat so that it can be metabolized. You don't get a buzz on HCG, what I got was just that I didn't get exhausted as fast. Instead of having to rest after 4 or 6 laps of the pool, I could swim continuously for an hour.

HCG doesn't destroy the fat. It makes it available so you don't have to eat as much external food. But the process is hideously sensitive to extra calories. One restaurant meal was enough to shut down weight loss for several days.

You really like to justify your excess weight by claiming that only destructive drugs work for weight loss. Cocaine, amphetamine, and ephedra are totally unnecessary. I don't even know how to obtain them.

My experience is that 25 pounds of problem went away, just like it did for the numerous people on YouTube/Yahoo that I copied. And the experience of the diet has reset many of my cravings for food that I had best not eat. The disappointment is on your part - I'm happy.

As for important pills, TA-65 is top on my list. Too bad I can't afford it. C0313741 and similar are important milestones.

I certainly agree here. I think that fat metabolism is a major player in determining weight. What really pisses me off is all the people who eat more than I do, exercise less, and still maintain a better weight.

A number of researchers I know think that all the fructose in many people's diet has an effect far beyond just the calories. It apparently drives fat storage, and/or blocks fat release. Corn fed beef/chicken/fish are also bad players. Corn fed salmon? Bizarro.

One of the strongest athletes I know believes in a vegan diet that is heavy on grass. Grass fed beef is one way to build muscle, but he believes in going direct to the original source. Wheat grass, spirulina, that sort of thing. Really pisses off the whey protein animals that he wins against.

This might make sense if he were a ruminant. Humans lack the necessary equipment and helpful tiny fauna to extract much useful food value from grass.

Sorry. "Sierra" means "saw." It also means by extension a short mountain range, since that resembles a saw from the right distance.

Since there are several mountain ranges with sierra in their name (Sierra Nevada, Sierra Madre, etc.) referring to "the sierras" could mean the collection of mountain ranges so named.

Not all that far, really. Golden to Banff is a two-hour drive according to mapQuest. However I'll be at a lodge accessible mainly by helicopter. It is possible to backpack in, but I think it's a couple of days hike. (It's not heli-hiking. Access to the lodge is by helicopter, but the hiking starts and ends at the front door.) The place is Purcell Mountain Lodge. It's not cheap, but it's worth it.

If I carry a full backpack, after a couple of days I'll be unable to walk. Ever since I hurt my back shoveling snow in N.D. Plus, I am addicted to my daily hot shower. And I hate sleeping on the ground. So it's hiking lodges for me. Or sometimes a hotel in a hiking area.

Oh, yes, also there's the business of the weather. It's no fun hiking in the rain and getting soaked and cold. But at least with a lodge, I come back to a dry room and a hot shower, and a dry supper, and a warm bed, rather than a wet tent and a damp sleeping bag.

    I've always been a fair-weather outdoorsman.

That's kind of like saying "It isn't necessary to replace water with something that's wet."

No, that's not far at all. I'll wave to you from the top. :)

After a week of hiking, one of those little rooms with hot water coming out of the wall is pure decadence. A mattress feels like floating away on a cloud. How can you appreciate the comforts of home if you never leave them behind? The first few days back, four walls and a roof with no view and no wind feels like...being disconnected. Like the music suddenly stopped.

I'll take heat over cold and wet any day. Being comfortable despite the weather is what clothes are for. And going to all that effort without the reward of the view from the top is torture. But hey, overcoming adversity builds character. On day hikes, I carry enough food and clothing to survive overnight if I have to, but I'd rather not. The wife would kill me when I got home anyway.

Now that usage flames about anglicized terms from other languages are legitimized, here is one that annoys me --

On this portion of the planet, the natives don't append an 's' to pluralize many wildlife nouns: bear, deer, elk, moose, salmon, etc.

For example, 'bears' is improper, it is 'bear', whether one or a hundred of them. I can't find who most recently tripped on this one, but here are the first to pop out of Search:
Next up, people who pronounce 'llama' with an 'el' sound.

apparently the local lack of interest in faith-based rather than evidence-based modalities is insufficient to dissuade the believers from blathering on ad nauseam about it. how shocking.

daniel, might i point out that you are highly critical of yourself and others. i get the interest in intellectual rigor, and disagreements/debate here and there, but there is a lot of give and take involved in relationships. sometimes you need to let things go. not crucial things, of course, but little things.

other parts of this thread have been an interesting peek into the male psyche...

    Right-o. I'll do likewise.

Oh, I can appreciate the comforts of home just fine without sleeping on the hard ground for a week, wet, cold, and dirty. On Long Caye, Glover's Reef, Belize, I've gone two weeks without air conditioning. Twice. And at the chalet at Durrand Glacier I've spent as long as three weeks with no indoor toilet. For a week or so at FCI Sandstone I lived in a cell with no cold water: only hot (that was weird: I had to collect water from the sink in the paper cups our kool-aid came in and leave it to cool before i could drink it). So I've left comforts behind. But sleeping on the ground, wet, cold, and dirty is not my idea of fun.

And as for adversity building character, I've never believed that one.

And one reason for paying for a guide is that the guide carries the emergency gear. I can afford the wages of the guide more than I can afford crippling back pain. At Durrand, where all the surface water is drinkable, it's not bad, but at places where I have to carry all my water for the day, in addition to lunch and extra fleece and full rain gear, a day pack is pushing my limit right up to the edge.

Yes, I've been told this. Easier to say than to do. I TRY to keep my mouth shut. But it seems this leopard cannot change his spots.

I used to be a lot worse, though, if you can believe it. According to friends who have known me for a couple of decades, I have improved considerably.
