Econ mode at higher speeds?

If I was your dealer I would have panicked that you were not doing the proper break in for the first 600 miles. (no high speeds and vary speeds frequently)

Eco mode, however, would not produce the symptoms you had.

You never need to take it out of Eco.

 

Agree w/ JP. ECO mainly just changes the response of the throttle to give finer control in the first 1/2 of throttle movement. PWR does the opposite. Exactly the same amount of power is available in all 3 modes (ECO, Normal, PWR). I run ECO all the time including sustained 70 mph freeways.

I have no idea what the problem was, but feel it was not ECO.

 

My personal experience is to use Eco in town/heavy traffic and leave 'normal' mode on the open road with Power used for overtaking or motorway slip roads.

The different modes do just affect the throttle response and if you floor it in eco you will get the same power output as power mode. I do find normal more more responsive for open road/highway driving.

I'd experiment with the different modes and find which works best for you for your own circumstances.

The best answer is when ever you want to use it. You can use any mode you want when ever your want.

 

Harper42, actually similar stalling happened to my prius about a month or two ago but I always drive on PWR mode and it happened at around my 14000 miles. But since then oil changed once and no problems found. Other than that I really didn't have any problem with my prius and love my car so much!

The ECO mode can be used whenever you want. There are those that never use it because they don't like the response of it, there are those who use it all the time. There are even those who use PWR mode all the time.
I use ECO mode (and the other modes, actually) like GrumpyCabbie does.
What you describe though, has nothing to do with the mode and it seems more an issue with the car itself. Did you try to floor the accelerator when you started to lose power to see if it would work again properly, or it is simply waned down? did any warning lights in the dashboard go off?

 

The dealer could but he doesn't have to - it is written clearly in the manual...page 151 to be precise. The manual, that is something a user should read, and with the Prius, *must* read, IMO. Many questions in this forum come from people who never took the time to read the manual or even go through it. You buy a 20k$+ "thing" and you don't read the manual?!? ("you" I mean, all those who buy a car, and don't even bother to "look" at the manual).
