I noticed that there has not been much recent activity in the Extended Warrenty thread. I assume that the WarranyShack.com purchase option is still open. I have 5 days left to cancel my agreement from the purchasing dealer and I'm thinking about doing it tomorrow. I filled out the online form for a quote today and I would expect a much lower quote that I paid during purchase! I bought the 8 yr 75K mi Platinum Service Agreement and it looks like they took me to the cleaners! How has this option worked out for others on the forum? You get the same agreement from Toyota that you would get from the dealer. Right?

Yes it's a Toyota warranty. Troy (the guy who will answer your quote form) is a great guy to do business with. He will tell you what to do. In his contact info will be his phone number he will be happy to talk to you if you have any questions.

I purchased a new Prius at the beginning of the month. The dealer quoted me $2980 for the Platinum 8 yr/75000/0 deductable. When I balked, it suddenly dropped to a one-day only offer of an employee rate for $1840. Thanks to this forum, I ended up going to Toyota of Greenfield (warrantyshack). Cost was $885 for 8 yr\75000\0 deductable. Other rates were available for different year\mileage plans. There may be even better deals out there, but I can live with this one. Regardless of what dealership offers it, it is the same Toyota factory extended warranty.:)

I hope everybody understands that a yr/miles warranty ends when either criteria is met, and the first 3 years are covered by the new car warranty regardless.

I am curious, are non-zero deductible warranties for sale ? Or say, just on the inverter and battery ?

Yes, Toyota $50 deductible extended warranties are available. They have a MSRP of $50 less than the same extended warranty with $0 deductible.

Here's a link to a chart of the Toyota extended warranties for the Prius, and their respective MSRP Pricing, Benefits and Components covered:

    https://www.toyotafinancial.com/con...ue&_pageLabel=pg_VSAPricing&carSelected=Prius

You'll have to ask Troy/WarrantyShack.com/Toyota of Greenfield, MA for his price for the specific extended warranty you're interested in.

    Even that is over MSRP!
We will never know if the dealership screws its own employees, or the guy was just lying.

Either way, a typical car dealer vermin.

OK, now that I have cancelled my Dealer inflated extended warranty I am rethinking the whole extended warranty deal! I was tempted in the first place due the the technology of the Prius. (Lots of expensive parts) However Toyota is known for reliability. So I would feel better getting some feedback from the forum. How many have opted for extended warranty and how does everyone feel about the Gen III reliability? Maybe it does not have enough time on the market to tell?

I opted for the warranty to 125k knowing my luck and I just wanted peace of mind that I won't be hit with a big repair bill. After reading these posts for awhile, while big repairs are indeed rare to DO happen and i don't want to be the unlucky one.

Mike, people who bought the warranty are going to tell you it is a good idea for 'peace of mind' (whatever that is), and those who declined are going to tell you to put the money into a CD.

I think most of us agree though, that a couple of questions can reasonably sway one way or the other:
Do you have savings to self-insure against the rare but expensive repair ?
Are you flexible in using DIY or second hand parts, or is it dealer only if a repair is needed ?
Will a large fraction of mileage allotment be used up during the first 3 years of ownership, when the new car warranty is in effect ?
*Will you keep up with scheduled maintenance ?
Is your driving habits or environment particularly harsh ?
When do you plan to sell the car ?

    * I think this is actually the most important question, because the rare inverter or transaxle repair cost are the bogeys you want to avoid (not the battery!), and if you are smart about keeping the fluids and oils in spec, the chances of failure in a car that is not abused are really, really, low.

At a minimum, keep your warranty money in your bank account collecting interest in say a CD for 3 years, and decide on the warranty before 36 months are up. That way you will have 3 years of experience with your specific car to help you guess what the future holds in repairs, and you collected ~ $100 in interest for free. Or even better if you have a high apr loan, pay it down with the warranty money. Just be sure to put the savings into a nest egg for repair costs if needed.

On a tangent, I suspect that the division in warranty buyers vs decliners follows to a large degree whether a person has an upside-down loan; and even more strongly if the car was bought with cash (or a loan if an arbitrage took place). Just a guess.

But in Canada - we are always screwed !!! Americans, count your lucky stars.

I'd cancel in a heartbeat the 1,500$ ECP I paid on the 2010 for 5yrs 100,000km, if I could get decent elsewhere.

Thanks SageBrush for a very thoughful reply. I'm leaning towards your suggestion. I paid cash and can self insure. I'm good on the maintenance and will probably not put a whole lot of miles on the car. Probably average 6K/yr. I intend to keep it long term. I guess my only question would be if the Factory Extended Warranty could be purchased before 3yrs are up even if the vehicle has warranty repairs done under the std warranty.

I think yes, but a quick email to Troy at warranty shack should give a certain answer.

Read the 1st and 2nd gen posts. No one has spent more then $1,000 on repairs. Do not waste your money.

I do not think this is true, but I have read a handful of cases where people came to the forum with a multi-thousand dollar bill (MFDs come to mind) suggestion from the dealer, and decided that a little DIY and second-hand/repaired components would be just fine instead.

It is really quite surprising (and wonderful) that such a high tech car allows so much maintenance and repair work outside of the dealers arena. I cannot even begin to guess how much money Patrick Wong has saved the community by encouraging simple DIY, or try to value the fantastic diagnostic expertise given freely here every day by our Prius gurus.

The Prius is an excellent car, but it becomes a GREAT car because of this forum. I doubt the warranty writers factored in PC and an honest salvage market (thinking of you, autobeyours.com) when they decided on pricing ;-)

Keep in mind that the extended warranty can wait until the end of the OEM warranty looms. I have more than recovered the premium of the extended warranty on my last three cars. But buying it at the time of the car purchase was unnecessary. I won't to that again!
