Everyone who is against an EV sound - lobby your representative to strip that provision off of the upcoming motor vehicles bill.

I'm sorry, I find the extreme nature of peoples reaction to this, funny.

But admittedly I have a strange sense of humor.

To me? It kind of makes me think of digital camera's. Most of them have a "shutter sound" programed in. So users have the familiarity of a shutter camera sound.

This is kind of the opposite. Giving a vehicle a sound so others can be more comfortable.

Think about it? Either way is it the end of the world? The reality of how much this is needed or unneeded and what the public will demand and accept will shake out. It's like evolution.

This does remind me of the early days of the automotive industry, when different laws existed to try and get the new fangled auto contraption to co-exist in as much peace as possible with the horse and buggy.

If I was purchasing a Leaf...I'd just enjoy being part of the evolution. Think about the possibilty of having a vehicle with downloadable external sounds?

I'd have mine make the sound that The Nutty Professors Model T did when outfitted with flubber.

I'm not a real fan of adding artificial noises to cars, but I didn't think the forward sound was THAT bad. I actually LOLed at the reverse sound.

The video linked to from http://priuschat.com/forums/nissan-hybrids-evs/81381-vsp-vehicle-sound-pedestrians.html looks basically like the same one on the Nissan Leaf Facebook page. It gives a good high level overview of what they did to come up with these sounds and the groups they worked with, including the National Federation of the Blind.

The Facebook version is at [ame]http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10100225651968509[/ame] and is not vertically distorted.

    I recommend watching it.

The idea of requiring hybrid and electric cars to make more noise than an ICE (think BMW) is the issue. All for the sake of the 67,000 Americans who could use a simple bit of technology to make their walking around safer with ALL cars (according to the NHTSA study).

This kind of noisemaker is going to be so distracting it's going to more dangerous for everyone (as the LEAF, Prius, etc) cover the noise of the 4 cyl ICE.

And I think noise pollution is not something we want to promote... people don't listen to each other enough as it is.

Nissan could have used that same "WALK, WALK, WALK" annunciator that is used at cross walks. :D

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop called - they'd like their samples back.

(Very reminiscent of 60s Dr Who!)

This is awesome. It means my Prius will still be the quietest car on the road. LMAO.

Forward sounds good. Back is not so bad.

I heard the worst-ever warning sound on an airport "electic cart" the other day. It sounded like a bent brake disc scraping on a caliper every wheel rotation. But it got everyone's attention without the driver having to yell "Excuse me!" every two seconds.

I'm curious to hear what 5 or 6 or 10 of these things sound like at one intersection. Surely the "experts" have already tried it.

Honestly, I like the forward sound but not sure what it will sound like when you have multiple vehicles emitting the sound, are they all different tone & pitch or all the same. If they are all the same then will it multiply and sound really loud, if they are different tones will it make it louder and more difficult for a blind person to recognize where the sound is actually coming from (direction)

As part of this excellent first drive review, the author made a comment specifically about the noise maker:

In light of those comments I may have to attenuate my opinion. I certainly want to hear it in the real-world for myself, but if it is truely as quiet or quieter of a conventional ICE vehicle I think I could live with it.

Late to the party but please allow me to say,
"that's the most freakingly annoying and stupidly artificial and did I say annoying? sounds I've ever heard."

Are you telling me that the car will be making that forward noise the entire time it's in motion? Will it shut off when standing still or continue to be stupid?

I will wear BOSE noise cancelling headphones when driving the car just to try and drown it out. That's so amazingly annoying that I will hear it in my nightmares.

What someone OUGHT to do is get ICE cars to ALSO have to add noise makers. After all, many ICE cars are extra quiet. That way, you'd get the Automobile Club, Automotive Digest, Top Gear, Road & Track, ad nausium to help fight the crazy factor in the upcoming legislation.
    Bah - It'll never happen.
