I've had similar issues. Last summer mine lost all contact with the dash volume button several times over a period of 6 weeks. It happened once last fall and not since.I yelled & pushed on the dash several times and all was well. I've noted several threads on this issue. Is there any chance their might be a TSB on this I'm approaching 31,000 miles and will make sure my dealer knows about this...soon
I haven't heard about a TSB. But I should definitely search for one, so thanks for the suggestion. In your case where you're still under warranty, I think it would be useful if you could take a short video of the radio buttons when they're not working. You want to be prepared in the event that on the day you bring it into the dealer, the radio buttons are working properly again and the dealer therefore doesn't want to fix it.
Weird, I have a radio button problem too: When I try to turn my radio off with the PWR button, it does one of 2 things - 1. Doesn't turn off 2. Turns off and then immediately turns back on As some have said, the steering wheel works flawlessly. But I'd rather press a button than hold down MODE for a few seconds to turn off the radio. Never thought I should deal with this until I saw this thread...What should I do? Thanks.
I'd bring it into the dealer while it's still under warranty. The problems are likely to get worse (I think that eventually, CDs will not eject, which means that the only thing you can listen to on the radio are the CD(s) stuck in there) and recur more frequently. If you can, take a video of the radio buttons showing that they're not working and bring that video to the dealer as well.
With all the people having this same issue I am amazed there isn't a recall or at least a TSB about it. I have never ever had an issue like this with a vehicle before. It is so stupid that the radio buttons would stop working, this sort of thing shouldn't happen unless it was a bad design or poor quality control. I feel that Toyota should step up and fix it even if we are outside of the warranty. And because they won't, I most likely won't buy another Toyota again. I used to be a loyal Nissan customer, until they wronged me once. I will never buy another Nissan, no matter how good the deal. I know I am only one person and Toyota really won't care, but when a company screws me over once....I never buy their products again.
Now that I remember there was a time my CD wouldn't eject. I had to power off the radio and turn it back on. So you bring it to the dealership, they believe you, then what? Do they install a new unit or tinker? I also have the ext warranty so is this radio thing covered under 7 years?
I dont have time to read all the posts, but the thing with the volume knob happened to me too. The guys at the toyota shop didnt find anything wrong. I found that if I slightly push the console inside it starts working again
I had problems with my 2004 CD rejecting most CDs. I bought a replacement from Steve at Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle PHEV for $70 (plus $12 shipping). It was from a 2006 and works great. Steve buys wrecked Prii and sells parts and does major Prius repairs. He is in Indiana and has the stereos in stock. Call him. JeffD
Most likely they will replace it with a re-manufactured unit. Toyota's so called "Techs", don't tinker anymore. It is to costly for them to solve this problem, so they just replace the radio instead. Doing this does not fix the reason for the problem, as it will just happen again down the road.
My radio buttons failed again today. It took several bangs on it to get them working again. I fear this will happen more frequently as time goes by.
Maybe cleaning the electrical contacts with one of these DeoxIT™/ProGold™ Twin Pack - RadioShack.com or something similar will help. Good luck!
And how exactly do I get the button panel off to be able to clean the contacts? It was my understanding that it is a solid unit built into the radio head.
I was thinking that one may spray the cleaner into the gaps between the buttons and the panel without removing or disassembling anything.
That is not a smart thing to do. The cleaner will get all over the plastic, which could damage the finish. Blindly spraying this stuff in there without being able to wipe it off, will just make a mess that collects more dirt.
Yes, it's best to get to the actual contacts and apply the Deoxit right there. It's good stuff, by the way.
I doubt that it's the actual buttons or knob, since they seem to all fail simultaneously. I suspect it's the interconnection between the front panel and the main board, either the cable itself or where it connects.
just curious. did anyone contact Toyota service yet? my used 2009 Prius with 9000 miles has this problem also! none of my buttons would work besides the " Power " button. tapping all over the panel did bring them back but the "round tuning button " still not working. now that's bad quality, it's even a JBL!!
At least you're under warranty. Take it in for a warranty repair/replacement. I believe the "JBL" stereo actually comes from Fujitsu Ten. Can anyone confirm? I griped about their stuff at http://priuschat.com/forums/newbie-...ing-04-05-any-gotchas-look-2.html#post1164877.
going to the dealer tomorrow " round tuning button " still not working also going to have them check on that Aux TSB mine has static noise when i am using certain charging cable or my 3rd gen IPOD
