Toyota tech cannot turn off reverse beep

    The technician at Toyota showed me the options. You could either have a continuous beep or the intermittent beep, but you do not have the option of turning it off. I told him it was possible, but I have no idea how.

    It's possible using a Scanguage II Xguage to control the beep...the tech can only make it a single beep (not off)...SGII can't disable it either...just control it.

    There's 10,000 threads on this topic on here if you search "Reverse Beep" as well as "Seat Belt Beep."

    He was using something that looked like a laptop, and the only options on my print out are "single" or "continual". I don't know if he was using the Scanguage II Xgauge.

    When switched to continual the beep is continuous.

    Can you tell me how he would do this since he wants to know too.

    That something he was using costs $8k! Do yourself a favor and buy a Scanguage II...not to disable your rev beep...to get better mpg...will make a world of difference if you care to conserve fuel.

    I don't want to buy anything. I already get 50 mpg. If the Toyota tech says he can't do it then I don't understand how others do it.

    Can someone just tell me what to tell the Toyota tech, step by step?

    As long as you're satisfied with 50 mpg...I guess that's all that matters. But just so you know...the car has at least another 15-20 mpg in it...just by driving more efficiently...no physical mods need to be done to the car...it costs you nothing!

    As for not understanding how others disable the reverse beep...watch this video. The instrumentation the guy in the video is using is a Scanguage II and he does NOT eliminate the beep...only can control continuous or single beep.

    The Toyota tech is using a Toyota tool. Toyota made a decision to not let their tool completely disable the reverse beep. The Toyota tool *could* do it, but they chose not to, therefor there is nothing the Toyota tech can do about it.

    ScanGauge is a third-party tool, and with it you can completely disable the reverse beep.

    Thanks for the information. I wonder how other people have had the beep disabled at Toyota dealers?

    I had my rev beep changed to a single beep and my seat belt beep disabled...alot of people have it done there.

    I didn't realize it was this hard to get done. I think I will just live with the beep.

    I'm not going to go out and buy a tool for the Toyota technician.

    And it seems ridiculous to me that a Toyota technician with an $8,000 tool cannot do something that anyone with a $169.00 tool can do.

    If you take the car to the dealer, you have two options:
    1. A single beep of short duration.
    2. Continuous intermittent beeping.

    What made you think there was anything else he could do? Every post I've read gave those two options. Most people who wanted the beep gone chose #1.

    Others have purchased a Scangauge II for other reasons, and were able to completely eliminate the beep.

    So you have three options. Isn't that enough for you?

    There's absolutely no excuse for a Toyota service center to claim that they don't know how to change the beeps for reverse or seatbelts from constant beeps to single beeps.

    With their service computer, the selections are simple tick boxes on a windows setup screen.

    That Toyota buried them where the owner can't get to and change them is inexcusable but any dealer concerned with keeping his customer satisfied should be happy to change the settings while your car is in for its first service (or even upon original delivery).

    The single beep is fine. I just had mine changed from continuous to a single beep and you will hardly even notice it once they do that.

    Part of the confusion comes from the Gen II Prius. With the Gen II you can do this yourself, without any special programming tool.

    All the Scangauge is doing is sending the same CAN message as the Toyota Techstream scantool sends. The Gen3 options are single beep and continuous beep for the backup signal.

    Maybe Toyota dealers should buy Scangauges. It would save them a lot of time that the Techstream spends in setup. :p

    You don't understand. I have a print out of the "single" and "continual" options. The default is single beep - which means the normal intermittent beep. The "continual" beep option made the beep sound continous - it never stopped. It was much worse than the intermittent beep. The tech was not using a scanguage, but a kind of laptop. As per a previous post, the Toyota tool does not allow the option of one brief beep and then nothing.

    I notice you have a gen2 Prius. The gen3 is different.

I wasted an hour and a half assuming that I could take my gen3 to the dealer and have the beep changed to a brief beep and then silence, but it is not true. Toyota techs are not equipped to do it.

    I have a 2010 and I took it to my dealer and they changed the constant beeping while you are in reverse to a single beep when the car is placed in reverse. Either your toyota tech is an absoulte idiot to be able to change the rev beep to a single beep instead of continuous...or you are failing to understand what the last 10 posts are telling you.

    I have to duck out of this thread because it is mind numbing...its not that hard to fix the beep. And there are 10000 threads on this site dealing with this issue...which you obviously have not read

    If you will read post 7, it is explained. I quote:

    This explains very precisely why Toyota technicians cannot change the reverse beep in the gen3. If people have had it changed at the dealer, I can only assume that the tech used a scanguage instead of the Toyota tool.

    It is not me who fails to read the relevant information.

    My dealer changed my rev beep in my gen 3...and he didn't use a scanguage...I was there when he did it. He used an 8000 dollar gadget the dealership bought to service vehicles...the service manager told me they have 6 of the gadgets...so they are not a magical box...they are in the hands of every dealership in the country you live in.

    So let's make this simple for you.

    1. Get in your 2010 prius and drive to your dealership
    2. Tell the service manager you want to have the continuous beep changed to a single beep
    3. Wait in the lobby
    4. Pick up your car when the tech is done
    5. Put your car in reverse and it will beep one and no more noise except for the voices in your head

    If you would like me to call your dealership to explain what you want done to your car I will gladly do it.

    I have a ScanGauge and a GenIII. The code that I found on this forum, and used, changed the original continual reverse beeping to a single beep. It did not completely disable the beep, and I'm still unaware of a ScanGauge code that does.

    If you know the code that does completely disable it, post or point to it.
