Well, Well! Pulsing WORKS! Just tried it on a 20 mile round trip and came back with a 54+ MPG average! Great information on these forums!! Thanks everybody!
good work, Solar! of course, in a few weeks and a little more experience doing it, you'll be bragging about your 75+mpg drives.
I use pulse too and gt great results. It is all ruined of course when I leave work at middays and afternoons and end up in horrific traffic!
I've been trying P&G for the last week (since I read about it here -- I'm a new owner of an '06). The biggest issues I have with P&G are that it's not really compatible with the roads I drive on, with speed limits of 50-55. In North Carolina, not driving the speed limit incites some rather serious road rage! I've tried to modify the routes I take to get to and from work in order to maximize the time I can spend on roads with speed limits less than 45 so I can take advantage of P&G, but that still only makes up about 30% of my daily drive. But, some P&G is still better than NO P&G
When I pulsed my 1st tank full into the 60's mpg range, I got an encouragement to try for the 70's mpg. Yes ... it works.
If your speeds are only between 50-55, then you're a candidate for Super Highway Mode (SHM). See http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...angauge-best-threads-mileage-improvement.html. You'll need a ScanGauge II though...
I don't think ScanGauge is necessary for SHM. Just use the Prius' own instantaneous MPG bar graph. Keep the accelerator pressed lightly to maintain speed and aim for the highest achievable instantaneous MPG below 100 MPG. It's easy to tell when one gets out of the SHM: If the accelerator is pressed harder, one will see a quantum jump to lower MPG. If the accelerator is pressed not hard enough, there will be a quantum jump to 100 MPG. Good luck!
In my record of my 28k miles on my 09 (I drive a lot) it says under "cumulative" for February 14th 361.66/19,161 (53.0 mpg) Then it says "started P&G" This week it said under "cumulative since P&G":136.84/7825 (57.2 mpg). I am currently getting over 70 MPG on the dash, and my last 2 tanks were 69.2 and 68.1 MPG. I'll say it works.....
OCD ... yes, you've got it bad my friend ... this may call for intervention. The first step to recovery is admitting it. You can admit it. Do you feel great discomfort when you fall below 60mpg? Welcome to my world.
I think that most folks here have it as bad as I do.....at least as bad. For example, I have no Scangauge..... Gotta say, though, that one of my students saw my record file up on the computer and was kidding me about it (good humored kidding - she said she's probably do the same if she had a Prius). It felt a bit as if I had been caught with porn, though........
