Looking for suggestions on upgrades to the JBL stereo in the V. I noticed a few threads where guys are installing new tweeters. I would expect that to help the "flatness" of the stock system. The stock system lack a bit of "punch" too. Anyone do a small subwoofer???

    Appreciate any feedback.

JBL adjusts the system to be "neutral." Have you tried playing around with the settings?? For me, i like the neutral sound...and i have highs and mids at +1 while bass at zero. However, i leave ASL ON.

A small subwoofer (esp. those that fit under the seat) probably won't add much to the system since they probably can't go any deeper nor louder than the JBL's DSS bass system (6x9s in front doors and 6.5" in rear doors). To go deeper, you need a big subwoofer...which means that your trunk space will be compromise. The smallest of this kind is probably the Infiniti BassLink.

i'm in the process of a new stereo install in my new prius. been at shop last 7 days. ENTIRE car has been dynamatted...trunk compartment swathed in dynamat. custom, down-firing box with two 10" subs. diamond audio in all doors, new 5-channel amp. There may be a snag with the install though. My installer called today and said that the system is all TREBLE? something about the factory JBL amp settings. even the clean sweep doesn't correct the issue. i'm going to check it out tomorrow. i may have to throw a new head unit in it...supposedly there is an adapter out that allows you to work all prius controls with aftermarket head unit. we'll see...

Yeah, given the JBL system, you probably have to gut the entire system and start from scratch. Also, given the speaker locations on the Prius (and traditional set of diamond audio speakers), you may also want to look at headunits that have DSP capabilities (not just equilizers or clean sweep). For example, Alpine makes headunits with IMPRINT-capability. IMPRINT is Audyssey for car. Since you're spending quite a bit of money, i would go for it all and get things done right.

Yes the stock JBL HU MUST go, I gutted the entire stock system and installed all aftermarket stuff. This is the only way to go. Do not keep the stock HU with the clean sweep, you will not be happy.

Damn...It looks like this is the only way to go. Having the "Aftermarket-ing" gene can be a curse.

StrongDoc, what DA speakers and amp are you planning on installing? Why a 5-channel amp? Are you using one of the channels to power the subs??

You may want to check shawnb's old posts. It sounded like he went through a lot to keep the atp working and install his new equipment.

that was the plan..to power the sub with the 5th channel. Diamond audio D661s. 2 memphis audio 10" subs in the hatch. I just put a kenwood dnx 7000ex head unit in my tundra. i might end up putting the same in the prius...

Thanks to all that have responded. Since I paid for the stock navigation/JBL hu, I would prefer to keep it. Please let me know how the dynamat goes for the doors. Will it eliminate the tinny sound when you close the door?

I had Dynamat Extreme installed in all 4 doors and it did eliminate the tinny sound. It also makes the stock amp sound louder. I highly recommend.

Now, that is something that may make the bass sound tighter...hmm, i may do that. KMKREMER, how much did it cost to install the dynamat in all the doors (including labor)?

Maybe everyone already knows but the head unit of the Prius V is required to use the Parking Assist feature if I read the old post correctly. I remember someone here with a Prius V that had the same problems. Just be sure to check if that is the case before you aftermarket everything.

Parking Assist only applies to those that have the Advance Tech Package. You can get a NAVI withOUT the package. But, yeah you're right, StrongDoc is in a tough situation.

yep, i'm gonna have to go with a new headunit. i was at the shop yesterday and the stereo sounds like SHIT with the stock JBL running through the clean sweep. no matter how you adjust the highs/mids/bass on the clean sweep/amplifier...it doesn't matter. due to the DSP of the amp and no inputs to separately control the channels, you can't just throw on a mono amp and sub, thereby using the stock JBL to power the doors. It won't work. My guy was on with toyota tech support, etc. they had several suggestions but it still sounds like nice person.

while at the shop, he hooked up a CHEAP $150 deck to the amp running through my system (no stock HU or JBL) and holy crap does it sound good!

therefore, the stock headunit is coming out and the new kenwood with adapter (allows me retain use of steering wheel controls) is going in. i'm this far now, so gonna finish. regretfully, as i did want to keep the stock HU.

ps - to those who asked. my doors go THUD now...no "ting" anywhere. my guy charged me $400 to install dynamat to all doors and just slather it down in the hatch department. a great deal really. the only thing that rattles on my car with the bass BOOMING is the license plate holder. Besides, i'm 37 years old, i will never play it as loud as he had it at the shop, i want to keep my hearing as long as possible. i just like to have some boom in my pocket when the song calls for it.

i'll post pics in a couple days when its all done.

I have yet to work on a factory system that I have not been able to crack the output from the factory head unit. If you have a oscilloscope and a tone of about 1000 hz you should be able to find the input signals going into the JBL amps and put the clean sweep in front of the amp. There have been only a few cars that has stumped me and that was due to a digital signal going into the amplifier. I don't have a Prius V here to test but it has to be doable. I was able to get a clean rca signal from other JBL based system in other cars so I don't think it is impossible.
