So I broke the mechanical workings of my prius key. As in the little button that keeps the "real" key in the key itself. Anyone know if its possible to by just the casing with the slider separate from the entire key assembly. I'm trying to avoid having to pay $200. I'm talking about the dark colored piece shown in picture 1 below with the arrow on it.
that is exactly my problem, thank you for sending that. I'm afraid I can't manufacture the same fix however. oh well.
The part is called a "transmitter cover". The black logo one is part number 89751-47020 and costs about $10. I don't know the silver logo number, but the black logo cover fits my silver logo fob just fine. Another option would be to buy a used fob off eBay. I got one for about $15, although most go for $50 or more. Then just switch the cover from the used one. You might want to register the used fob for use as an emergency spare fob-in-dash key. Programming instructions are in http://priuschat.com/forums/knowled...lly-how-program-non-sks-key-fob-detailed.html Just follow the 5 instruction list in the first post. And for the rest of your evening's entertainment, read about how getting the remote/proximity functions to work on a used fob is just an exercise in frustration.
Rob, How did you find the name and number of that part? When I go to various Toyota OEM parts sites and enter "transmitter" or "transmitter cover" or variations of these keywords, the only thing that comes up is the whole transmitter for around $160 - $200. Of course, when I enter part number 8975147020 I find the transmitter cover. But I can't otherwise find it.
OK, I can't stand it: why did it break in the first place? Admittedly the design is not robust, but do you use the mechanical key every time you use the car?
yes, my driver's side door does not unlock unless I use the mechanical key. It costs 95$ for the dealership to even look at it so I said I'll deal with it.
I don't recall how I originally found the cover, but it's listed as part of a group of items called a "lock cylinder set". If you google for "89751A", a number of listings come up for Toyota keyfob covers, including Prius, Lexus, and Scion. Apparently "89751" is Toyota's designation for a keyfob cover, and "47020" identifies the black logo Prius cover. And I just found out that 89751-47010 is the number for a silver logo cover. Here's a link to one online vendor who lists the Prius keyfob covers: 2006 Toyota PRIUS Lock Cylinder Set - 67-12 1885 Another link for parts lookup is ToyoDIY.com I agree that most parts databases are useless for finding this part.
A lot of nice fixes IF: you want to go to so much trouble. Why doesn't the drivers door open automatically? If the rest of the unlocks with the RF signal then you could investigate the drivers door further, ie: new battery, lubricate, reseat associated connectors.Do you need a new fob battery? If your fob is electronically broken then as suggested you could just carry the key on a lanyard.
Its only the driver door that doesn't respond, the front passenger, and hatch respond just fine. This makes me believe its not the fob battery. I took the door off a while back and found everything was not easy to get to underneath so I gave up on fixing it myself.
Did you try hitting the lock/unlock switch several times on the drivers door?, can you feel the lock actuating at the door?
sometimes yes, sometimes no, sometimes it sounds really sad like it wants to work but cant. btw the key part worked out thanks to the person that suggested the P/N!
Good, on the key part. It sounds like the amplifier or relay device, which should be at, on , or around the door is intermitant. Could just be moisture at a connector. Reseating several times may help. Search door, lock switch.
I know that the Toyota Gen 2 Prius parts database that everyone uses is awful. Oftentimes, if the exact same part is used in multiple model years, Toyota may not list it under all those years. For example, even though they had the Touring Prius in model years 2007-2009, and you have say a 2007 Touring Prius, you may not find Touring specific parts if you plugged in 2007 as the model year of the car that you're looking for parts for.
Sorry for reviving a dead thread but this is almost the answer that I needed. Does anyone know if I can buy the other part of the shell? (Part with the buttons). They've worn through from being in my pocket. I'd like to get something cheaper than the $50 or so for a used key on ebay. Especially since I won't know how worn those buttons are. Thanks!
The main part of the keyfob case is not sold as a separate item. Your best bet is eBay, or some other variant of used. I just scored a Gen3 keyfob for $23 on eBay, so it really isn't necessary to pay $50+. Just set up an eBay search and watch it for several weeks. Very few of those $60+ items actually end up sold. There are a number of tactics that help with getting a good deal on eBay. The first is to take your time. Watch similar items for a month or longer to see what the going price is. Ambush bidding is the most effective - enter your first bid about 15 seconds before the end. Keyfobs come up all the time, so don't worry about losing any particular auction. As they say in Las Vegas, Good Luck!
