seawolf: doesn't the entire cars warranty get voided once you throw in a turbo?.... (duh, in a sense)

i would assume the OP already thought about that.. after all, he is basically gutting the engine bay to install his own mods...

It does seem odd to me that someone would buy a -prius- and then de-cat it? takes all sorts i suppose!

I don't want you to think about I ignored your post, been trying to think of a proper response. No emissions laws here, only have 8yr/100k HV warranty. On another note, there will be no "gutting" of the engine bay. I'd *much* prefer this thread stay with a positive attitude/outlook, please.

As long as you pass the state inspection, you should be ok.

Do you have a dyno to verify the end result? To do a comparison, do you have the result prior to the turbo?

I am scheduled to make 6 pre-turbo dyno runs towards the end of this month. Once I put the turbo on and get it running correctly I will get some additional dyno time to see the effect the turbo will have on overall power output. I bracket race my Prius every Friday night so I will have plenty before and after timeslips as well.

FYI for others - boosted Atkinson cycle = Miller Cycle.

Curious - how will you handle fuel enrichment if your goal is HP? Generally, the stock the Prius ECU strives to maintain stoichiometric 14.7:1 (proven on past dyno runs for Gen II, haven't seen it re-validated on Gen III, but nothing in Toyota's docs, NCF guides, etc, suggest that this has changed).

Are you keeping the stock engine/internals, or going for a more 2ZR-FTE type approach (non-Atkinson, higher red-line, etc.)?

If I ever had money burning a hole in my pocket for something like this, I'd be interested in a 5PSI boost more from an efficiency/economy gain perspective and thus wouldn't opt to gut cats or remove the exhaust-heat recovery if not required, though a cat-back exhaust would be a must.

Why sacrifice emissions (laws or otherwise) for pure HP in a car that strives to be eco-friendly first and MPG friendly second? I could think of tons of other cars far more suited for this unless the shift-less nature of HSD is the sweet spot for your cause.

Will be using stock internals. Going for quicker 0-60mph times and improved fuel economy. My reasoning for doing this is it's different and my racing already attracts a ton of interest from folks at the track. The way I see it is, anyone can build a Subaru WRX, however, it takes dedication and work to boost a Prius. How do you think the whole Honda/tuner scene got started?

You have a valid point and worthy goal. You can claim the fastest Prius as well as the first gen3 turbo charged Prius.

How about an electric powered super charger? Turbos don't do well up here in the cold temps.

**UPDATE** Held off on getting exhaust work performed this weekend, wanting to wait until after I go run on the dyno next weekend (next Saturday). My exhaust plans have changed, going to keep the cats and EHR mess (for now) and have 2.25" piping ran from the EHR back with no muffler other then the resonator in the EHR. The majority of the rest of the parts I need to complete the turbo build are currently on their way to me. So stay tuned, turbo Prius isn't very far away. :D

I'm interested in your mod. Have you figured out how to reprogram the engine? If not how will you get the extra fuel fed?

    Thanks

Thanks for the interest. If the car won't compensate for extra airflow, will likely be using a SAFC or something similar and if neccesary use larger injectors.
