PriusChat member Radarguy has put together a great video on all of the different neat ways you can use the Prius' Intelligent Park Assist function over in this PriusChat forum thread. Intelligent Park Assist is a feature found in the 2010 Prius V Advanced Technology Package. Seriously, this video should be mandatory viewing for Prius V ATP buyers. I learned more about the system by watching a 6 minute video than I have in a year of researching the Prius.
There are also some great follow-up comments on the IPA system in the thread linked below.

Nice video. What software video editor do you use? Can you recommend it for AVCHD format? Thanks!

Glad you liked the video. For light duty editing , like the video i posted here; i use iMovie. For heavy duty editing i use Final Cut Studio. Both work great with AVCHD.

Thanks!! Lots of good info. I haven't tried back-in parking yet, and I didn't realize the system could function using only lines (that is, it doesn't need cars on either side). I look forward to giving it a try (in a lot with white lines!).

IPS really is a good system, and very useful downtown once you learn how to use it.

Thanks for the video! Definitely useful for newbies or those who don't have IPA and would like to see it in action.

    Just a few things

    - For those who had keen eyes, the last back in demo around 4:50.... you can see that the car is smart enough to turn the other way first then the correct way to get into the stall.

    - If the box is way out of line (e.g. like the demo with the white drain), you can touch the screen to reposition the box (the flag will go where you touched). This is one thing that journalists failed to learn. They just assumed that the arrows were the only way to move the box which, as you can see, will take much longer

    - IIRC, the manual also says that the car remembers the last position of the car if you use IPA without the Pre-Support function for back-in mode so if you remember roughly how you position the car (45°? 60°? etc), then it'll make for a quicker setup

    - If you use the non-Pre-Support function for back-in. You can additionally help the computer by stopping when your driver's seat is in the middle of the stall

    - lastly, my office uses yellow lines and it works fine. It's not perfect (i.e. completely straight) but it doesn't give me a red box or a box that's completely out of the stall... again maybe it's something to do with the positioning of the car.

For a stall, the car has to be on the nearside (i.e. if you're parking in a stall to the right of the road, a vehicle must be present on the left side when you finish parking) if you're using the Pre-Support function.

Edit: Sorry, LeeB, I mean right side of the road... nothing like adding to your confusion, eh? haha

Thanks for this very nice, very useful information. You have now inspired me to begin using a function of the ATP that I figgured that I would rarely ever use. I suspect that if Toyota Dealers had this to show Prius buyers they'd discover more people desirous of the feature and the ATP option. My dealer never even mentioned it, I only knew about it from the research I did on my own.

    Thanks Again !

Thanks for the video. Isn't the speed is too fast annoying? I get that every time.

Great video! I've posted it to the frontpage of PriusChat. Hopefully a lot of people learn more about the IPA system through your efforts.

Radarguy, I have only had limited success with the system and commend you for what you have acheived. I find it difficult to target a space during perpendicular parking because the car has to be so far away from the space. Note that I am engaging the system while I am still in the traffic lane, making the car turn & back up, not when I am already lined up with the space. I can pick off a perpendicular spot on either the right or left side of the car. I haven't been able to get pre-support to work at all.

It would help if the salespeople even knew how it worked.

I did go for a test drive of a 2010, specifically w/IPA and my sales droid barely knew how it worked. He partly misguided me w/incorrect info. I eventually ignored what he said and tried poking around myself and succeeded in getting it to auto-park a couple times.

I doubt he knew how to operate all the other modes and about how scanning worked.

Oh well... It is a very cool feature as was LKA, that I also intentionally tried. Too bad the price premium is so high. :( I wish I didn't have to go all the way to model V + pay $4500.

(I wasn't actually prepared going into the test drive as I hadn't intended on it. My Prius was at a dealer for an oil change and a sales droid lured me into test driving a 2010, even though I told him I had no intent to buy in the near future. It seemed he had nothing else better to do as it was a weekday morning, so I took him up on it.)

    Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the video. What are your experiences with parallel parking? I have difficulties finding the right time to select the Pre-Assist, so when it beeps I almost all the time get a red square.

Do you stop before starting Pre-Assist?

Thanks for the nice video. I would like to see one though with more tough parking situations. I mean, parking in US parking lots is *quite* easy... Parallel parking in EU busy narrow roads or maybe in SF or NY, this is where IPA can truly be of help, I suppose. As well as in narrow parking spots - this is where it would be interesting to see what the IPA does.
The IPA was so expensive in EU that I did not even consider getting it - you have to pay 3050€ on top of the standard price of the Life version (trim 2 out of 3 available) at 26750€ (without delivery and registration costs, and other accessories or metallic paint). So, to get IPA (OK, together also with GPS, etc.) would cost at least 29800€ :( - you do the math in converting that in USD, and you land at least at 35k$+ :( (BTW VW and others offer similar systems, at similar prices - Toyota is no more expensive than others...).
Anybody out there that can show how the IPA works in tough parking situations to show its benefits?

Parallel parking? You start it before or while you're still next to the car behind the space you want to get into, and it tells you when to stop (typically 1/4th car length past the car in front of the space you want to get into).

It's a no-brainer, but make sure you're not too far or close to the cars or it won't work.

Yes I have seen it in videos but it very seldom worked for me. I will try if it is the sideways-distance. But I also have the feeling it might be a speed problem: So do you start Pre-Assist when stopped or what is your max. demonstrated speed?

    Thanks!
