Can these be left on permanently and thus function as daytime running lights? In other words, will they turn off automatically when the car is turned off?

From what I can gather from the installation documentation, the answer to your question is: Yes, they will operate independently from the headlights and will turn off automatically when you power down the Prius. I haven't had a chance to install mine yet, but I will double check with the manufacturer to be sure.

If you hook it up per that instructions (brown wire @ the ECU) the answer is yes.

Question on that "method" - legally, these must shut off when high-beams are activated to keep the "4 simultaneous headlights on max" rule in check (note OE installs where fogs turn off with high-beams). Will they do that if wired as suggested? If not, we'd be looking at 6 lights on w/ high beams, and I wouldn't be interested in a ticket, despite the allure of this being a DRL solution.

Since I live in the Seattle, WA area, and I live in "rural suburbia," the fog lights are important to me. While DRL would be great (and I wonder why those aren't standard as well, at least give me the option to turn those on), I would much rather have the fog lights in our climate and dark winters. I am looking forward to seeing a post from someone who installs these!

I wonder if I got these, if I could just install them in the place where the bling lights currently are....I'd imagine the wiring would be essentially identical, with the only change being a real button as opposed to the radio-shackesque on/off switch I have now.

Could you tell me if the lenses have DOT/SAE stamped on them? Thanks.

If you could document and post pictures of your install that would greatly appreciated.

The lenses have SAE stamping on them and are glass, seems pretty thick to me.

As for documentation and pictures, I will try. However, the instructions that Danny provided are very clear and look very precise. I haven't had a chance to review all the steps in detail, but they look comprehensible (I can say that I'm not very technically savvy when it comes to electrical connections, but the few connections that are required do not seem very difficult). With a newborn demanding all my attention these days, I'm not sure how much time I could devote to installation, documentation, and pictures. I'll attempt it though...

Received the parts today. It all looks very straightforward although some of the instructions are a bit confusing. For example, Step 3.2 says install the lamp in the bezel which is easy enough but it doesn't stay put. It slides in but isn't fastened in any way. In step 3.4 it says to place the bezel assembly (bezel + lamp) in the hole in the vehicle and then fasten it with a supplied screw (there are 8 black wood screws and one machine screw so I assume it is one of the wood screws) and a 10 mm nut one took off when removing the blank. However, the wood screw appears to just secure the foglight to the bezel which I think would be easier to do before bringing the bezel assembly to the car. Anyway I screwed them together on the bench and will try putting them in the car tomorrow if it stops raining.

All in all it looks like a high quality kit. Nice thick lenses, decent plastic, and high quality panel switch. I've attached a picture of the kit. One lamp is installed in the bezel (driver's side) and the other is not yet assembled.

I'm having a problem guys. My fog light kit does not work (no lights, no light on the switch) I installed the kit exactly as the directions instruct, with the exception of one step....

There is a step where we are to remove 2 bolts from the engine compartment and place the relay at bolt one, and the ground and bolt two.
I had an exceptionally hard time removing just one of the bolts so I attached both the ground and the relay to the same bolt (the ground is under the relay so it IS touching the bare metal).

could this be the source of my problem? ever other step seems to be properly done.

We are assuming the lights are at least set to the parking lights setting... correct? You might also check the wire tap on the brown wire @ the ECU... that has caused a problem with another person.

No that shouldn't be a problem. I just finished installing mine and I also had real trouble with those bolts. The one facing down came out fine and I put the ground under that one as directed. I could not get a socket wrench on the one that is facing sideways. I took it out with an open end wrench but with the relay under the screw I couldn't get it back in. I don't see how that was supposed to work anyway. There is a bent piece of metal above the screw which would have kept the relay from sitting flat and the bolt from going in all the way. I decided this was a bad idea. Thus I put the relay under the mounting bolt for the fuse box which is right next to the recalcitrant bolt. It fits well there. My fog lights work fine.

I would check the 12V (red wire spade) connection in the fuse box, that the 20A inline fuse is okay, that the white wire bullet connection under the dash is connected (and check the female end which probably got abused being pulled through the firewall and make sure the wire into the crimp connector is still in good shape. Finally make sure the vampire connector onto the "brown" wire into the electrical harness is okay. This enables the fog light relay when the headlights are on. BTW, just to make sure, you know the foglights only work when the headlights are on (including the light on the switch)? If none of this is wrong, it is time to get out a multimeter.

I have several pointers and minor corrections to the instructions which I'll try to post tomorrow night along with some pictures. The install took me 3 hours but I could do another one in an hour after figuring out a few things. Finally, the fogs stay on when you switch to high beam. I thought this wasn't legal since the lows, highs, and fogs are all on in this case. How does the V behave?

    p.s. the fogs look sharp!

Be sure you are following the B/W instructions for actual installation, because they are slightly different from the color ones. One of the main differences I picked out was on step 6.10, the B/W instructions point out a different bolt to use for the relay than the color one. Looks like a much easier bolt to use.

You mean that you must have your headlights on to use the foglights? If true, then there is no way to have the fogs on all by themselves as daytime running lights, correct?

    Danny,
Would your supplier consider just selling the light units separately?

Well, the headlight interlock is a wire you attach yourself between the foglight relay and the prius electrical harness. I don't have a prius harness diagram but I would guess that this is just 12V and you could attach it to accessory 12V instead of the headlamp circuit. You would need a harness diagram which I've heard can be downloaded from Toyota by buying a 2 day technical subscription for like $15.
