Just got my recall notice for my 2009 Prius on Thursday.

Said they would replace my older Toyota OEM All-Weather mats with new improved mats.

Hey, new "FREE" mats. I was tempted. But luckily I checked the forum first.

I'll stick with my current "dangerous" mats

 

As bad as they look, I may take them up on it. I've had the official Toyota all-weather mats in my 07 since 07, and over time, I have developed some significant cracks through the rubber under my right heel. I'd gorilla-tape the back, except it would be near impossible to get a good seal. A new mat with little 'depth' is probably still better than the 'funnel' I have now -- unless someone has a good suggestion how to effect a repair [I do like those original mats...]

 

Just shows you the power of the media in this country. A lot of people believe everything they see on TV--the worst place to get facts. The car mags have been the best source for real data.

 

To the OP or anyone else ....

why did they shave your gas pedal?

Look down there, push it to the floorboard with your hand ....

there is no reason whatsoever to shave the bottom of the gas pedal!

If there are wrong size mats, there are wrong size mats. If you have really wrong size mats, a shaven gas pedal will still get stuck.

So, why did any of you let them shave your gas pedal???

Is the 2005 pedal different than the 2009?

 

My driver side mat cracked at the base of several of the ribs and I didn't notice until I pulled the mat out one day while vacuuming. I repaired the area where the cracks were by gluing a thin piece of rubber mat to the bottom side. I had to shave off the "nubs" in the area where I glued the repair piece, potentially making my mat even more dangerous, but fortunately I am able to use the hooks to keep it in place. I used polyurethane glue (Gorilla glue) to glue the repair piece in place.

The "new" mats wound up in my car too. When I noticed them I called the dealership (mine apparently is supposed to take and destroy them) and found out they still had mine. Signed the waiver and got them back, thankfully. The "new" ones are very thin and the lip around the outside is very low and doesn't go all the way around.

The accelerator pedal "shaving" is pretty crude...

 

I lost my heavy Wethertech mat (maybe mats, didn't look closely on other side) because I didn't read this thread before going in for service today. However, I'm not planning on a complaint because now if something goes wrong they can't say it was the mat I was using that caused it. Heavy with deep grooves was overkill for around here but the new mat looks like serious underkill. Still, it will beat getting the carpet wet all the time...

 

Got my recall yesterday for the '07 Prius for the floormats. If you don't go in voluntarily, they will call you to set up an appointment, at least mine did on the '08 Camry Hybrid. As I said, they didn't keep my mats, they just put them in the trunk, but this time I will remove them prior to going in, just in case the rules have changed.

I got my recall notice last Saturday. I already had an oil change scheduled at the dealers for the following Monday. I thought maybe they would mention the recall while I was there, but they didn't bring it up. I didn't either because I'm thinking about not having it done.
I have the Weathertech molded liners and I don't see any way the pedal could get trapped by the liner. The liner is not going to move anywhere, and I pushed the pedal down to the floor and it doesn't come close to interfering with the liner.

 

I got home from having my mats stolen and found a recall notice telling me I'd get my mats stolen...

 

I had my car in for service on Monday for the throttle plate sticking. When I went to pick up my car, they actually removed my WeatherTech Floor Liner on the driver's side and shaved the gas pedal too, much to my dismay. I have 193k miles on my Prius and have never had any trouble with the gas pedal. The WeatherTech liner even has the hole in it to clip to the floor to keep it in place. What a crock of crap Toyota is trying to pull off!! Grrrrrrr

 

I just made an app't to have this recall done to my '08. But now, I'm reading through these posts and wondering if it is worth sitting on my butt for two hours while the T - techs saw up my gas pedal and replace my OEM vinyl mats. This recall doesn't seem necessary, presuming an owner uses OEM mats and installs them correctly. The question I asked my dealer when making the appointment is "would it hurt my resale or trade in if the recall is not done". I got a very uninformed, wishy-washy answer that told me nothing.

This whole issue has really soured me on Toyota, though I have had no problems with my Prius. I mean, if they are so dumb as to start cutting up gas pedals and throwing away perfectly good OEM mats just so they could claim they "fixed" a problem caused by incorrect mat installation or non-OEM mats, I gotta think they need a real shake up in their legal and marketing staff.

 

Just as a post script re: my '08 recall for the killer floormats and widowmaker gas pedal:

I sat down with the service dudette at my dealership and asked to see the mats they would put in my car to replace my "Death Mats". They didn't look too bad, IMO. Thinner than the Death Mats that I bought from the same dealership, but otherwise, acceptable. She said they would give me a matched set for the driver and passenger sides, but none for the back floor; so, I 'd have two old style in the back and two new style in the front. I told her I didn't want the new mats and she said I had to sign a statement refusing the new mats, and I did.

I also asked to see a gas pedal after the recall modification had been done. I wasn't impressed. The bottom ... eh, I'd say 3/4"? had been cut off in angles approximating the original edge, and it looked a little tacky to me. I told her the bottom edge of my gas pedal did not touch the floor, and my old mat was securely anchored and could never ride up under the gas pedal, so not to bother. Signed another "waiver" form.

In other words, I refused the entire mat/pedal recall for my '08 killermobile. BTW, I mentioned that some folks on this forum were complaining about a huge cost to remove the front bumper in order to replace the HID bulbs. The service dudette said removing the bumper was news to her, and they charged $200 per bulb (including labor). Yeah, steep, but lots less than the $1,000 plus some folks have posted in various threads on this forum.

Oh, and I joked around a little with the chickster at the shop about Toyota's recall hysteria. She said she could not comment on the necessity of a recall for the floor mat / gas pedal issue; BUT, it might have been a good thing for more than a few of her customers who brought cars in with as many as THREE (3) layers of floor mats on the floor! Without saying so, I think she was implying that the recall at least helped save a few drivers from their own stupidity.

 

Perhaps that was the engineering criteria for the thickness of the new replacement floor mat: you can stack them 3 deep and still not have to worry about interfering with the accel pedal. :madgrin:

 

Just got an appointment for Saturday to bring in the 06 Prius for floor mat/ gas peddle inspection. I have the OEM mats still w/hooks n holes, and it is securely fastened. The accelerator peddle doesn't even come within 2" of the mat anywhere during it's travel, and I've never had any problems either. Heck the dealer can't even do an oil change without overfilling it! I'll be damned if they're going to shave the gas peddle and throw out my perfectly good floor mats! No Way. On another note, has anyone thought it may have been the cruise control being bumped by a person's leg after they came from the highway and had it set at 75? That would certainly cause unintentional acceleration. How about that lady who drove into the garage and supposedly had unintended acceleration into the wall? That could be caused by the cruise control as well. But I have never heard anything about this yet, and I can see how a person could accidentally hit the cruise control thus engaging it. Just my 2c.

 

I just got my notice today and wondered what the pedal looked like after the modification and the quality of the new mats. Glad I checked in with you guys. Can anyone post of "after" pic of the pedal and one or two of the replacement mats?
If it looks as bad as I have read, I may waive getting that junk done. Frankly, I have the OEM all weather mats I purchased in Nov. 2007 on top of my OEM carpet mats (yes, Toyota will tell you that is a big no-no, but hubby is a little OCD) Both mats hook into the clips. Have had none of this crazy demonic floor mat problem and don't see how anyone could if they are using OEM mats. Now, if you go buy some piece o'crap mats at Wallyworld, they will gradually bunch up.
(Only problem I have had is that 2 years of driving to work in heels has worn a hole almost completely through the AW driver's side mat!) When I go to replace the mats, I will probably look into Weathertech. My cargo liner has been fantastic!

 

Oh my god.... Leave it to me to not log in and find a new hobby the last 2 years...

My 06 got recalled. I had the all weather mats. They actually were close to developing a hole in the area where I rest my heel, so I was going to need a new set anyway. Dealer shaved the peddle (It drives the exact same.... I can't feel a freaking difference) and gave me some new mats... which I was going to have to buy anyway. And they shampooed and cleaned my entire front carpet.

While I was in I let them know that my inverter pump was SCREAMING at me, and they replaced it for free as well.

I couldn't be happier.

For a guy that owns a 4 year old Prius, that has never had a problem whatsoever.... I couldn't be happier.

So lets all just take a big old chill pill.... and go with the flow.... for once...
