If I have the dealer disable the Smart Key System thru the Customizable features, will I still be able to start the car with the electronic key on my person?
The only slot for a mechanical key is in the door. Do you really mean you want to start the car every time by holding the fob up to the start button? If that's all you want, why not just take the battery out of the fob? The passive RFID in the fob will still work.
I did not realize that I would have to hold the fob up to the start button if I disabled the smart key feature. I thought that only the door feature would be disabled....but if I can remove the battery from the fob and still be able to start the car with the fob in my pocket, then I should have what I wanted.
I'd like a mechanical key that has the RFID transponder built-in, so I don't have to carry a fob around. Has anyone seen an aftermarket key like this?
Ideally, I would only like the wireless remote to work when I push the button on the remote for opening and locking my doors and to be able to start the car. If I remove the battery from the fob, I assume I will not have the button feature for the doors. Am I correct in this assumption? I asked the selling dealer these questions and they had no clue.
With SKS disabled, but still having a battery in the fob, you will be able to use the fob buttons to lock and unlock your car. The door buttons will not work. Obviously the mechanical key will still work. To start the car, you will need to hold the fob up to the hot spot so that the passive RFID can be activated. Tom
After reading some messages about depleting the 12v battery, I thought that disabling the SKS feature might safeguard me against this.
The SKS has not been the problem with depleting the 12V battery from what I have read. It is usually leaving on an interior light. The 2010 turns off the SKS system after non-use after 5 days, I believe the manual says.
