The dealer I bought my car from wouldn't make this change .. "safety issue" they claimed. The next (closer) dealer in Los Angeles wanted to charge for this.

Here is the exact post on what to enter into a ScanGauge II to change the reverse beep.

Programming keys and tire pressure sensors is a bit more complicated, but armed with a sniffer, this might not be impossible depending on what needs to be sent to the computer. The keys might require values that are hashed -- something only Toyota can generate. The TPS units are probably just paired with a serial number on them. (I haven't seen it.) We just need to sniff the Toyota Techstream traffic to see how this works... and it might be possible with a Scan Gauge II.

Have you reported this to Toyota Customer Care?

My guess is that Toyota didn't make it a "customizable feature" for the customer to have customized to their liking only to have rouge dealers decide it was a "safety issue".

You might also want to PM Prius Team (Toyota USA Marketing) here on PC. A dealerships refusal to change those options is just unacceptable to me, and I would hope unacceptable to Toyota also.

I am still looking for some dealers that will do it for a reasonable price. My dealer in Toronto, Canada quote me $100 (approx US $97)! when I inquire about it before I pick up the car.

Assuming labour cost is around $60 US per hour, it is hard to believe that it will take 1.5 hrs to complete!

I spent about an hour at Cherry Hill Toyota who made the 4 changes I asked for without ANY hassle or charge: lock functions, reverse beep to 1, seat belt beep off.

Our Dealer also refuses to turn it off. They said it was illegal.

When I purchased our 2010 Level V the first thing I told him when he called to say the car was ready for pickup was to disable the reverse beeps and also have the door locks changed where unlocking the front door unlocks all doors. When I got there, the technician had the computer hooked up to the car and was changing the software. No charge and they said they were happy to do it.

Your dealer is wrong. When the seatbelt beeper is turned off it still beeps about 6 times and the red warning light flashes. That is all that's required by the NHTSA for a seatbelt warning. What is turned off are all the extra continuous beeps that Toyota puts in to keep us "extra safe". If it were illegal to turn those off there is no way a company as cautious as Toyota would provide the option of doing so.

The reverse beep is simply not required in private passenger cars. The reverse beep we hear on construction equipment, delivery vans, etc. is for commercial vehicles and sounds outside the vehicle, not inside such as the one on the Prius.

If you really want it/them off you can get a ScanGauge and follow the instructions in this post http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...cussion/64406-scangaugeii-work-2010-a-19.html or find a better dealer.

I had the seatbelt and backup beeps reduced to minimums for no charge when they did the brake ECU reprogram, although they got it wrong the first time. If you haven'tdone the brake fix yet, you might try this approach. Good Luck

I had the same problem: Toyota of Richardson first said they didn't know how to turn it off, then they said they would do it for $60, now they tell me they won't do it at all.

Tell them, YOUR FIRED! After they hear this from a couple of dozen Prius owners, they will either change their business model to meet the needs of their customers, or lose those potential clients to dealers that meet those needs. Other Toyota dealers are close by in most of the U.S.

That's funny? Did you let your salesman know? I got mine done when I picked up my car Jan 4th. Did they forget? They didn't charge me, but it was the 3rd car I bought from them.

They've Lied to you!!! They don't have to take anything apart! I've done the turnning off myself. My brother works in Toyota and one day I went in and he pluged in this computer to my car and I can customerise any settings I want.

YOu have been ripped off and being lied to I think you should get your money back.

I have a Scan Gauge, but I don't know how to program it to change the beeps. Primarily I use it to monitor the temps and RPM's.
Is there a step by step thread on PC that tells this. So far I haven't found one.
I did see the chart for the codes, but don't understand how to change them and I'm frightened to do something that will mess up the computer.
    Thanks,
    Fred

Posts like this do help. If I read one bad review, I blow it off. But if I read several, I stay away from the place. Toyota of Richardson is really convenient to me, but I never contacted them when getting quotes for my March purchase, contacted three other Toyota dealers instead. You find so many negative reviews on the internet involving Toyota of Richardson. That's the power to the people of the internet. Maybe we can get capitalism to work and drive the sleazes out of business.

I grew up in Colleyville (went to Grapevine High) and I know nothing good could ever come out of Richardson!:p

You should try their parts department. It's like the night of the living dead. No personality and completely cold and unfriendly... like they're staring right through you.

I canceled a deal on a III this week because the sales manager wanted $200 to set the reverse beep and other preferences as part of delivery . Is that some sort of record? :) Claimed that nobody had ever asked them to do this.

Agree with the OP, boo to Toyota as well as the dealer, setting this up should be part of delivery, not an opportunity for adding fees.
