Understand on all counts, thanks. And my sympathies with bureaucratics, we got'em too, in Spades!

BTW, unless something changed in the last few weeks, our bumper requirement has been, and still is 5mph.

    Have a nice day......:)

We just imported a USDM 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid which does not have DRL into Ontario and it passed inspection just fine. No modifications neccessary. You must live in a really weird area. Having the headlights on is just fine.

And HIDs will not work with a PWM supply because there is a boost converter inside the ballast to make hundreds of volts to power the bulbs. Pulsing them will result in very early failure of your bulbs and/or ballasts.

Having read what you are doing, pulsing the main headlight bulb, this could result in error if the car checks for burned out headlights as pulsing will simulate the bulbs being off. Pulsing also effectively lowers the voltage on the line which could throw an error. However it is all in the wiring. All you need to do is use the headlight assembly wiring to power a relay to power the DRL module (which you could make for less than a $1CDN by the way). You might need to add a small resistor in the headlight wiring to "fool" the computer into thinking the bulb is inplace. A bulb is just a resistor to the circuit, when the bulb blows, it because an open circuit.

So with a relay and a resistor your problems could be solved without hacking around the windshield wiper motor. It also sounds by the way they wired it, they are shorting two circuits, that were meant to be separate, together. Not a huge problem, but electrically a very bad idea.

It would be nice if people read what was posted . I'm dealing with the Prius .

I didn't say windshild wiper . It's washer motor which obviousle is easier to access in the right front fender.

I'm aware of the HID problems and thus ,as I said ,am using the fog lights instead. But on my 2005 use the halogen lights.

As to your 95 Honda did you actually check with RIV ?
Some US Hondas had DRL's installed but not activated . However if you received the RIV(DOT) sticker... great !

Below are the latest RIV requirements for all vehicles . In my last posting I only included the basic 4 !
BTW I'm in Canada not Ontario and the RIV requirements apply to Canada .

    • Recall clearance letter
    • The vehicle must bear a manufacturer's valid U.S. Statement of Compliance (SOC) label at the time of import.
    • Valid alpha-numeric 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN)
    • Metric speedometer and odometer labels (provided by inspection centre)
    • Daytime running lights
    • Child restraint tether anchorage hardware kit
    • Child restraint tether anchorage point locations (see Transport Canada’s List of Vehicles Admissible from the United States)
    • French supplementary restraint system label for airbags that require periodic maintenance
    • Air bag equipped vehicles are required to have functioning air bags at the time of inspection.
    • If the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle is less than 10,000 lbs. and the manufacture date is after September 1, 2007, it must be equipped with an electronic immobilizer system that meets Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 114.

This is the end and I hope the origional poster got an bit of basic information that will allow him to install DRL's

Sorry I don't have pictures . As I said in one of my posts the work was done by a dealer .

I suggest you have a look at a wiring diagram for a Prius . There are sites that have them . Toyota has a site where you can dl the manuals. Also there are a couple of torrent sites I have seen that have various schematics for the Prius . Don't remember which years.

If you pm me, maybe I can dig around and fine my schematic for the 05. Assuming the basics would be the same as your 09.

I took a picture of the washer area and have some questions:
    Washer Pump.jpg
Which one is the connector for the washer pump? "1" or "2"?
Would "3" be OK for the ground?
What is the black plastic piece "4"? I need to remove it to gain access to the connectors but don't know how. I see a plastic fastener "5", any others to remove?

Interesting. But I would at least use the ign line not to carry the load but to switch a relay which pulls next to nothing and power the load off battery. There's no way the ignition system would care about a relay coil.

I love the idea of LED lights. Europe is so far ahead of us..... Did you know Russia will ban all incandescent light bulbs in 2014?

"4" is the air intake for the engine. I removed it easily in the past when I had to replace a bulb. Plastic fastener "5" will do.
I am looking forward to any replies about which wire from the ones we see on the picture should be used for DRLs.

Thanks! This is great. While I have it out I can do some screening for mouse proofing. :)

I've had a response from Hamsar regarding Prius DRL kits. They do not offer a kit for the 2005, though they said they would be happy to design one if I sent them wiring schematics. Also the '05, at least mine, does not have the small lights in the bumper that I assume are what y'all are calling Fog Lights.

So, since leaving the headlight switch on fulfills my DRL requirements (if not Canada's), I'll continue to do so, especially since I don't plan on moving to Canada at the tender age of 75. Thanks to all of you who gave me information with this topic...:)

I checked the connectors. Number 1 controls front washer, number 2 controls rear washer. I decided to use number 1 for my DRLs. I tested it with multimeter and actually both wires carry 12V, so you have to check which one stays on 12V when washer is activated (on of them will go down to 0V I suppose). The negative wire must be connected to ground, which I think is any metal part of car's chassis.

I will measure which of these two wires stays always on 12V when washer is used:

    ok, it's the blue wire!
black wire goes down to 0V when washer is activated

Getting ready to install the LED DRL ... Is there a torque spec for the bolt for the ground connection (marked "3" in the picture)? Thanks!

Another question: do I need to worry about the back EMF generated by the washer motor?

Hey everyone. I've installed, from webelectricproducts.com, their DRL-2P module which converts the turn signal front bulbs into daytime running lights without affect the operation of the turn signals. I've had the system for over a year on my '06. They work great and have received many, many compliments. I have yet to replace a turn signal bulb in over a year. The unit is inexpensive and installation is a breeze. What more could you ask.
