Here you go...

You can test the car's 12V battery using this procedure (thanks to jdenenberg):
- Without brake pedal, press the Power button once and release to enter ACC mode
- Press and hold the MFD Info button while turning the headlights on and off three times to enter Maintenance mode; release Info button
- Press "Menu" (on screen)
- Press "Display Check"
- Press "Vehicle Signal Check" - the battery voltage is shown and should be about 12.4 to 12.8 Volts (normal for an unloaded battery)
- Again without brake pedal, press Power button and release to put a current load on the battery - the voltage should stay above 12.0V (if less than 12.0V the battery is not well, or there is a fault or unusual load somewhere)
- Press brake pedal and press Power button once to enter "Ready" mode - the battery is now charging at about 14V (if less than 13.6V or more than 14.4 there is a problem, possibly with the charging circuit)
- Turn car OFF to leave Maintenance mode

 

I know this is an old thread but, I tried that procedure for our 2006 Prius and it wouldn't go into maintenance mode. Any suggestions? That procedure worked find with our other Prius, a 2007.

My 2004 sometimes requires 4 or 5 cycles of the headlights while holding down the MFD "info" button to go into "maintenance" mode.

I'd avoid the headlight on-off cycling method if your car has HID headlights.

Yes I believe any light using hot filaments will suffer from thermal shocks from on/off cycles. That's part of the reason I prefer this other method:

I would agree if the bulbs are cold and haven't been run sense the previous day, and you on/off 3 times first thing. But if you let the lights be on for a few seconds they will get warm. This also explains the color change in the bulb as they come up to operating temp, as the light spectrum gets charged into range one will see the color change. You can also verify this by being in 'maintenance' mode and watching this, but during this 'warm up or charge up' of the HID bulb that is when the battery will dip the most, and soon after warming up the voltage will go back to where it was at before we demanded the extra juice to warm up the HID's to normal operating temperature. But if you try just leaving lights on for a few seconds to 'warm up the bulbs' then the shock of on/off is greatly decreased and has no effect IMHO. I have worked with HID's on multiple other cars (installation and customizing), the warming the bulb tech. seems to work across the board for HID's. Only time I have seen HID's go out is if someone touched the bulb before install, other then that I have seen many more projection bulbs blow before HID's. Hope this helps some people out there, it is just my experience. I just wish I could run my radio while in maintenance mood, I want to see the drain with my radio, o well.

I did the Trans Fluid, Inverter Fluid, Hydroedge pumped up to 50psi, changed oil, capped off brake fluid, cleaned MAF/throttle body and the PVC valve (just removed and cleaned), on my 115k 04. Saved a TON of money from going to the dealer so thank you, if you ever come to So Cal please PM me for a nice treat. She's still getting used to the changes but man what a difference in response and general ease feel. Not really seeing huge increases in MPG but I completely notice the feel of the car, it feels like its doing the same amount of work but with MUCH less effort. Car rides smooth like new again. Thanks you so much. Up next will be shocks, and turning the front rotors, checking rear drums assembly, rotating tires, and I am getting very curious to see the condition of the battery vent in the back (read a few crazy stories). I also did the battery test through the vehicular signal, seems to be within acceptable operating range but is a little on the low side and could definitely be explaining my MPG drop. I'm thinking about the optima yellow (the famous kit) sense the OEM cost to replace is almost just as much anyways. Also I did some reworking of the intake system for some fresh air, and I am thinking about getting a K&N filter, though I have read some posts saying not to. I have run K&N on all my cars with Zero issues. Anyone worried about oil going into the engine has never properly learned who to install one, let alone maintain one properly through cleaning and reoiling. A quick note the PVC line was an easy clean w/o brake cleaner, just rip or cut a piece of towel and damp it with aqua and slip through to clean.........and scene.

 

Our 2007 has HID headlights and I got into the service menu on the first try and I cycled them when they were cold.

When you work on the rear shocks, that would be a good time to look at the traction battery vent.

Unless you notice pulsation when you depress the brake pedal, your rotors may not require attention. Their thickness when new is 22 mm and min thickness spec is 20 mm. I measured the front rotors on my 2004 recently and they were at 21.5 mm (measured when the car had ~100K miles.)

Does this work on '08 with navigation? Does not seem to (as I got an actual button at lower left)...

 

I don't have nav so I don't know. Did you mean a virtual button on the screen? Does that button cover the entire lower left corner of the screen without any boarder? If there is any boarder space I would try pushing there. Good luck!

 

Concerning cycling headlights three times, I read somewhere in these pages that you don't have to go all the way to headlights. Cycling to parking lights three times will work. And sure enough, I just did it and it works. Save those HID's !

 

Yes I have a 2008 with nav and it has always worked for me.

 

Where do you press on the lower left? On the "Info" screen I got a "Consumption" button there, but maybe I was in the wrong screen... I'll check again tonight to make sure I follow the directions right. The headlights method works but with the HIDs I'm reluctant to use it too often.

 

Search on here for Service Menu and you can find a video where someone shows how to do the "finger dance".
