Upgrading Nav DVD for my 2006 (Gen 5 NAV)

I have it downloaded but I'm not going to try it just yet. I never could get a working copy of 7.1 to work so I'm waiting to see if someone else get it working first. I have the media and I have the right burner because I've made copies of 6.1 just fine.

I plan on buying 10.1 when it comes out this year so I will be able to experiment with an original disk and report back.

 

I have a v9.1 nav disc, toyota original equipment #86271-53024, 464210-1380, U34, data ver .09.1, I bought for my 2006 Prius but I no longer need it. I traded the 2006 in on a 2010 level 3 w/ nav and it came with v9.1. I put the original disc back in the 2006 before I took it to dealer. I could sell the v9.1 at a nice discount? Make me an offer via PM, or email to jack dot betz at gmail dot com. I guess I will EBay it if no one on board wants it. I know this works as I used it for about a month in the 2006 Prius.

I've tried multiple times to burn 9.1 with no luck. Used WinXP/Win7/Nero/ImgBurn with booktype set to DVD-ROM on my Plextor PX-716UF, Samsung SH-203N, Samsung slim burner (forget the model), and a couple of Matshita's on my Macs (can't set booktype on these though.) None of them work in my 2006 Prius (even though they've been bit by bit verified as a perfect copy.)

I've tried both Verbatim DVD+/-R DL discs as well (I should be buying stock in Verbatim.) Maybe I should try Memorex, but I doubt it will make a difference honestly. I've even tried burning at 1x-4x speeds without a single difference in reading it (all fail immediately when inserting the disc.)

I've also burned 10 different copies of the 8.1 and 5.1 revisions using different configurations with the same set of drives above without any luck either. The only thing the system will do is upgrade to the newer firmware during the insert of the 8.1/9.1 dvd, but fails to read the map data immediately after the upgrade.

I've come to believe some Navigation laser assemblies will work with consumer grade DVD-R's and some just won't (just like the early Sony DVD players where they won't read burned discs no matter what.) I suspect this is intentional to prevent copying even if it's for a legitimate purpose of backing up your original DVD.

With all the time I've invested and the countless coasters ($2-3 a piece) that I've burned it would have been easier to buy a backup copy and bite the bullet on the cost. To tell you the truth, I'd probably be ahead right now!

 

I would definitely like to know what is the right burner? I've tried 5 different ones and none of them seem to work.

 

I copied the 9.1 for my 2010 and it works fine. I have burned about 5 different copies of the 9.1 for the gen 5 and cant get it to work. I tried different media and two different burners. The 7.1 copied i made for my gen 5 is working fine. Im starting to think the torrent file is no good.

The gen 5 disk were tested in my 2006 Prius

 

That makes two of us.

I'm going to be getting an original 9.1 Gen5 disc in the next couple of weeks. Once I do, I'm going to try to make a backup copy of. I'll post something here if it works or not.

Also, what was the burner and media you used to make the 7.1 copy? I'm trying to find a known good configuration and go from there. Thanks.

 

All my 7.1 copies were done in different burners. The only similar thing was the media. Verbatim DVD-R DL. Extremely hard media to find.

 

Okay - thanks. I still have 5 Verbatim DVD-R DL's left. I'll give those a shot when the 9.1 disc arrives.

 

I take my prior comment back. I just realized that I was doing this in my 2005 prius(gen 4). I've never had any media work on my 2006 prius(gen 5).

Has anyone ever made a good copy for gen 5??

 

After producing many coasters with all the various media brands referenced in this and other threads, I've also come to the conclusion that something about the gen5 prius nav dvd drive can't read burned media (only stamped). So now I've started on plan B which is to look into swapping out the drive itself. Has anyone pulled it apart to verify if it is something proprietary? If not that could be a simple solution. If it is I wonder if swapping in a drive from a different model Toyota or Lexus that have been verified to handle burned media might work.

 

I just did a search on eBay and found someone selling new Denso Toyota navigation DVD drives for $98 plus $8 shipping. I have a question in to the seller but unless they say it absolutely won't work I'll probably get one to try out.

 

So, I just bought an '06 with the #8 options but it didn't come with a navigation CD. I'm assuming that it has 5.1. My question is, should I buy a 5.1 CD or can I just go from what I have to the latest version. From what I hear, the first owner was an older gentleman and seemed to take extremely good car of the car. I'm assuming he didn't upgrade or even used the nav for that matter. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
