    Mainstream Prius has sold in millions and you can not compare the cost with it.

    Diesel PHV would still need expensive emission control. Making it a hybrid does not necessarily make it cleaner when the Diesel engine is running.

    The hybrid drive could ease some of the diesel emissions challenges by avoiding the worst regions. Derating the diesel is possible because the hybrid drive can provide surge power and avoid inefficient diesel regions. But getting the right mix will be tricky.

    Is Atkinson cycle possible in Diesel? I mean keep the compression ignition but it would have the expansion ratio higher than the compression ratio. More work can be extracted out of the fuel.

    The compression will be lower due to late closing of the intake. Will that reduce the Diesel thermal efficiency due to lower compression?

    Low compression and diesel is not a good mix unless you are going for a competition only type vehicle

    With diesel you already have a long power stroke, due to the long compression stroke.

    so these urea injects do not need a PDF or EGR?
    or have those cars al of them?

    All diesel cars here have a DPF and EGR. The DPF is for reducing particulates, while urea and EGR are to cut NOx. Using urea means less EGR is needed, which leads to fewer fuel consuming DPF regenerations.

    Lowering a diesels compression ratio probably won't work well. Diesels rely on heat to create combustion, lower the compression ratio and you will loose that heat.

    The new wave of piezo injectors allows the engines to burn all of the fuel an eliminate inefficies and emissions even further.
