On the other hand, you are a lot less likely to hit something while you regain control.

Driving is less forgiving of small errors in spacial positioning. Airplanes, however, go fast and eventually have to land.

This rings so true at my house..... I barely got 2 feet in the door and my wife was trying to get me to call the dealer and tell them to come get this car and give me my money back because it is a dangerous vehicle....

Among other reasons people are trying to lower the credibility of James Sikes, I read somewhere that he claimed to get 70+ MPG during his runaway Prius ride. That fuel economy is simply not possible at those (90+ MPH) speeds. Therefore, this guy must be a sleezball and lying through his teeth.

Just kidding, although someone interviewing him should ask about his FE during "the ride."

Reason for the satire: I hate seeing this forum, which is a wealth of info on how to get the most out of your Prius, being turned into a smear board against one person. Maybe he was lying, maybe not. But I would much rather see people giving scientific (factual) examples of why this runaway phenomenon should not happen, or can not be repeated, as opposed to digging up a ton of dirt on one person.

Bottom Line: Lets keep the focus on the car. Just my opinion.

What if Sikes was a geriatric porn star? Would that have any bearing on the incident?

I don't drive the car when it rains. As to driving it when it isn't raining, there is less of that than before I found the issue with the brake-throttle override. But I did test the master shutdown function and it does work, so if the car has a sudden acceleration episode, I will definitely be pushing and holding the Start/Stop button until the car comes to a complete stop. Then the car will be flatbedded to the dealer.

The constructive lynching that is occurring in this and other threads in the Internets is just as offensive and inappropriate. You have participated in the inappropriate behavior. Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

The early posts do a good job of dealing with the scientific issues regarding this specific incident (ie the allegation that the accelerator pedal went to the floor by itself and then stuck, or the claim that putting his feet on the brakes did not override the throttle). They don't need to be repeated. As we have learned more about the alleged victim, there are more and more reasons to believe he was not being entirely honest, rather simply being uninformed about how to deal with the situation or being wrong about what happened.

If it was a hoax, however, IMO he needs to be digging out of tons of dirt. If it is proven in a court of law that it is not a hoax, then we should apologize.

Re: Sikes says he has no plans to sue Toyota

    From Wikipedia:

According to SCOTUS, Toyota is a person. Time will tell if the mob (of which we have several examples on here) has done so in the first or second degree. When the judicial process takes its course, then capital punishment for Toyota may be justified. IMO they are innocent until proven guilty. The modern American abandonment of that principle is the true threat to our way of life.

You're kidding, right? Do you like your Prius? Do you like Toyota as a car company? It has come to light on this board that James Sikes is a fraud. To put it mildly, JAMES SIKES, AND PEOPLE LIKE HIM, ARE THE REASON TOYOTA IS IN SO MUCH TROUBLE TODAY.
Doesn't that piss you off just a little bit? It makes my blood boil.

This guy is a real estate agent, a swinger and belongs to a GM car club. He is obviously an honest person of sterling character with no grudge against Toyota.

Sorry, I intended to just read all 27 pages of this thread but your choice of words is baffling:
How is it that something is "constructive" also "offensive and inappropriate"???

You are parsing too narrowly. Try constructive + lynching. Then it should make more sense to you.

Because until the brake-throttle override is sorted out, the car could be a hazard to other cars on the road. Arguably, the car should sit in the garage until it can be inspected by the dealer. Effectively, that is what is happening. It is not being driven as much as it was before I found the issue with the override.

That is still conjecture at best. Sikes hasn't even had an opportunity to respond to all of the charges that have been leveled at him and you have convicted him.

The 911 tape is the only hard piece of evidence on what happened during those "harrowing" 20 minutes that any of us here has seen/heard. Everything else, including "news stories", are second/third/fourth-hand information.

Considering the highly suspicious nature of this incident, with inconsistencies all over the place, it is perfectly reasonable that rational people raise questions about the sincerity and/or motive of this man. That is not the same as mob lynching or whatever anyone might want to call it. It's just common sense.

Re: Sikes says he has no plans to sue Toyota

Truer words have not been posted today. Maybe even for the week. My biggest beef with Toyota is the absence of transparency regarding the data logging function. It could exonerate them, but there is this deafening silence. After a point, you have to wonder why? Especially when there is this cascade of episodes that an objective log file could shut down in a heartbeat. WHY?
