2002 Transmission Issues

    Technically correct but in this case, is it worth it? The labour to disassemble and check every bearing and bushing as well as the fact that the windings are cooled by the oil makes it a time consuming and risky venture to replace one component and hope everything else is fine.

    I put in a used transaxle, which has it's own risks (and a warrantee) but the oil pan on it was very clean and the oil very good which seemed to confirm the sellers claim of only 19,000 Km.

    I sure am curious. When the weather improves, I have a mind to bring one of the MGs to my local motor rewinder. I've seen similar motors on his bench in the midst of rebuilding and I'm curious what he will think of the beast. They mostly do stators there. Armatures get shipped to a Calgary shop that specializes in that. Apparently, stators are easier/cheaper to rebuild than armatures.

    I was going to apologize for thread jacking but this puppy was already all over the place when i chimed in.

    That would, of course, have to be ascertained on a case-by-case basis, and would depend upon the accuracy of the diagnosis, the residual value of the vehicle, and the desires of the owner.

    Although the transaxle would have to be removed and its cases split, checking the bearings and bushings would take about ten minutes.

    i've just come into an 02 prius w/ 76k miles from an auction. got it to start twice for a few seconds and that was it. the inverter coolant reservoir is bone dry. p3120 is the only code scangauge 2 gave out. i can get a salvage transaxle for $350. how accurate is scangauge 2 for transaxle/transmission problems? since inverter coolant reservoir is empty i'm wondering if maybe MG1 is fried too? i can feel the inverter coolant pump vibrating with IGN ON so I think it's good. would scangauge 2 be giving off codes for a bad inverter coolant pump and/or a bad inverter as well? thanks!

    • inverter status comes from a subcode - check the latest definitions for how to read the sub-code.
    • "start twice for a few seconds" - means the engine turned over but did not run.
    • no code for the inverter coolant pump - it either runs or doesn't and then the inverter overheats
    You might want a better, rebuilder's scanner. AutoEnginuity is good with the Toyota option. Alternatively, there Chinese knock-offs but I haven't tested them. Then there is TechstreamLite but it apparently has some sort of 'rental' configuration with TIS.
